I love lego! You have a wicked sense of humour and I'm still chuckling.

Lego in the Wilderness (insert devil emoticon here).

Since I switched to the Brick Testament, the Bible has become a fun and easy read.

Pure genius [:D] .

The notion of Monotheism and that some are "God's Chosen People" is the most offensive and dangerous piece of psychological and sociological propaganda ever written.

By its consequences, we are permitted to do as we will to any who are not "of the Chosen" like us - laying the groundwork to legitimise the horrors which we as a species find come naturally enough to us anyway - and to do which we are assured by the breach of every commandment and crimes extending up to genocide depicted in the OT, that we have God's permission.

I have read the book a few times, but what I do not agree with is what has been taken out of the bible.Certain books which were not deemed for public consumption by the religous leaders, the apocrypha.

I believe if one is to read and perhaps learn from a book, all of it should be there, I mean how can someone take an understanding knowing there are parts, chapters even missing.

To take a balanced view of things all must be present.

In addition to this my feelings are that, knowing that what we do have has been translated, multiple times, to get a text I can read. Translated by men with their own points of view and agendas. I give the bible that is at my disposal no credit for validity in my life. Therefor, nothing in it offends me.

meatcleaver -> RE: What if anything in the Bible do you find offensive? (3/2/2008 6:39:54 AM)

The Bible itself is not offensive in that it is just a bundle of ancient texts, though the one offensive thing about it is that it is a collection of writings, with many having nothing to do with each other, some left out and some put in for effect. If I recall my schooldays, most of the old testament was written down around 750-900, which makes it around the same age as the Ilyiad and the Odysey and concerns itself with the same time period. Which means that when god was creating the earth, Hercules, Archiles and Jason and the Argonauts were on theior adventures. There is a conundrum for superstitious people, which ancient text is right?

The really offensive thing about the bible, isn't the bible itself but the people who insist it is holy and  holds essential truth. How many believers know that the bible sanctions genocide? Well that is if you believe it is the word of god.

I don't find the Bible offensive, it is an attempt as many religious writings are, to provide some moral guidance--My irritation comes in when it is held up as the be all, do all, end all for everyone and it gets forced down throats. It represents a preiod of thinking, like the Koran, like the Teachings of Buddha, or the writings of Plato, Socrates, Epicurus---all put out there as moral guidance, food for thought if you will.

IMHO.

I find more wisdom in Socrates.

There is a bit in there about if your neighbour works on a Sunday, they must be put to death.

Its purpose was to protect people, especially lower class people, from being worked to death. These days we have trade unions.

LaTigresse -> RE: What if anything in the Bible do you find offensive? (3/2/2008 6:56:51 AM)

Ah yes, the wonderful union. For a nice chunk of your hard earned money they will happily negotiate you right out of a job!

Rule -> RE: What if anything in the Bible do you find offensive? (3/2/2008 6:59:21 AM)

I did not say that it was an improvement. In fact the trade unions have been infiltrated and are controlled by the minions of Satan, as are most religions.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: What if anything in the Bible do you find offensive? (3/2/2008 7:01:25 AM)

Yeah but there was at least a Mr Pink and a Mr White, hell there was even a Mr Brown.

I understand your feelings about this. however, in the defense of this, as I Jew i and my people have always been called, "the chosen people", I really think this came about for Jew's to be able to endure their hardships. Not to commit genocide on others. I think it came about as the result of the genocide and hatred of Jew's. Jew's have been the scapegoats throughout the ages. being  kicked out of one kingdom after another. Tax collector for kings and vilified by peasants. As they were marched from one persecution to the next..spanish Inquisition, holocaust, etc., marching to death, some would ask, "why?" " Because you are the chosen people." Being the chosen people is not all it's cracked up to be.

sirsholly -> RE: What if anything in the Bible do you find offensive? (3/2/2008 7:07:40 AM)

What offends me about the Bible is the way it can be taken out of context to justify ones behavior.
I cannot tell you, as a family therapist, how many times i have listened to "Wives, submit to your husbands".....quoted by (non-bdsm) men to explain their bullying behavior.

kittinSol -> RE: What if anything in the Bible do you find offensive? (3/2/2008 7:08:30 AM)

Thank you - please check out the Israel thread and feel free to add whatever you like on there. Help is needed [8|] .

"NObody escapes the Spanish Inquisition!!"

(sorry... Monty Python moment!! I hear that in my head any time the inquisition is mentioned..)

*goes back to lurk mode*

Just a couple points to clarify my own perspective.

I have no idea what your personal opinion is on unions Rule, was just stating mine.

As for satan, I personally do not believe in any one evil entity to slap a glorified title on. Sorry, no prince of darkness in my reality. As defined by the current book called a bible, satan doesn't exist for me.

kittinSol -> RE: What if anything in the Bible do you find offensive? (3/2/2008 7:11:08 AM)

The bit that really fucks me off is the part in the OLD Testament where Goddy makes woman out of a bit of man's ribcage.

Especially now that we know female is the default setting for human beings.

PS: corrected Old for New - thanks Ron [&:] .

favesclava -> RE: What if anything in the Bible do you find offensive? (3/2/2008 7:13:21 AM)

nothing. i'm a wiccan , have read it a couple times cover to cover and find it good reading.what i find offensive is the people that twist and turn the words for their own advantage . for example, the use of the wrong translation of thou shall not suffer a poisoner to live.
