MissAidan -> Self publishing BDSM stories? (2/25/2008 10:11:21 AM)

I have been working on a series of BDSM stories that are evolving from short stories to even longer ones.  I have posted parts in a blog and recieved a good response, and I am looking to self-publish at this point.  I know there is a lot of work that goes in to this, and I know it will take some time.  Does anyone know anything about self-publishing your writing?  Any tips or advice are very much welcome!

Aidan

Why not find a publisher? Then you will not have to put up with all that work that a publisher does.

I'm not sure I could find a publisher here, or anywhere, that would publish stories like mine.  They are not the most hardcore I have seen, but they are up there.

I am also looking for someone with some literary know-how to do some editing work for me on these.  When one is so close to the story, it can be hard to see flaws.

Look around for a print on demand deal. It is possible to have a small run of say one hundred copies for a relatively low price. A second run of another one hundred will be even lower. Take your time.

What is print on demand?

I know it can be a pain to do editing. I worked as an English tutor for a long while, and since YOU know what its supposed to say, you always see that and never whats really written. The question is are you willing and able to pay someone to edit for you, or are you going to have to depend on a volunteer?

As for the actual publishing a friend of mine has used www.lulu.com, and www.authorhouse.com
Both are pretty good in her opinion, but she prefers authorhouse.

Good luck
DV

While I wold be willing to pay for editing, I wouldn't be able to with my finances.  I would also prefer to find a volunteer who is either part of the target audiance or who will look at it as a piece of writing and not judge based on content.  Thanks for the links, I will check in to those.

Try www.lulu.com It is self publishing, you do all the work yourself in Word, upload your manuscript and buy however many copies you want. You can sell your book from their site too. I recommend it, I use it for publicity material for my work.

Of course as with all self publishing, you have to market the book yourself and that can take a lot of time and energy. Better that though than foolishly spending money of publicity that won't sell you a copy.

I still think that it is better to find a publisher. Perhaps in the United Kingdom?

I've looked at the sites, and as far as I can tell, neither one will publish any work that is remotely pornographic. :-(

What good would a publisher in the UK do me?  I'm in Ky.

Lulu is who I would recommend.  And they are cool with erotica and more graphic dramas.

I think you should send your work to bdsm/erotic-related editors. There are this kind of editor in my country, it must exist in your country too. What would you say is the more important to you: the quality of your writing or the bdsm content of it? I think most bdsm/erotic editors will look for both ;)

MissAidan -> RE: Self publishing BDSM stories? (2/25/2008 10:58:55 AM)

Wonderful, I was having trouble finding if Lulu would take it or not.  Now, I am sure that they exist in the US, but I have this odd feeling they would be very hard to find and very expensive.  I'd rather have someone who is in the lifestyle edit for me.

You might talk to AFlyInYourWeb

If you look at his sig line here...there are links to his 4-part story (wonderful story, I might add) that he published online at Literotica.com.

Course...we're talking online publishing, here; but you might pick up some tips there, I dunno.  He's a good guy to talk to...

And/or try:  http://www.greenerypress.com/reseller.htm, while I have no experience with them directly...I sure do like the books they choose to publish!

Good luck,
Beverly

I love literotica, and tried there first. They denied my stories and every one of their volunteer editors I've emailed has said they are too busy.

MsBearlee -> RE: Self publishing BDSM stories? (2/25/2008 11:12:24 AM)

Wow...  AFly had no such problem.  Sorry

Perhaps you might hook up with another writer here who might be interested in reading your work and helping you determine if they are good enough yet to try to publish?  Perhaps a writer could make suggestions that might help.

edited to add:  I've heard sometimes one must collect a lot of No's to get the Yes!

With any luck, I can find someone to work with.  I struggle with writers block something aweful.  From what I could tell, my writing was turned away due to content.  I was a bit upset, as I have read stories with much more graphic "scenes" and just as if not more graphic story lines.

What is the objective/satisfaction of being published?  Versus just having an audience on the web? Is your goal to reach more people, is it to make money, or is it because you would find some pleasure in having a book version of your work?  Not snarky questions - just trying to understand what the goal is so advice can be better.
