Agreed. I never understood the running down of others. I get that it helps them feel better about themselves, but have never figured out why/how.

Ever heard of making yourself look good by comparison? You can make yourself feel better in the same way. Freud called it (forgive the misspelling) schaudenfreude. It's the good feeling you get when you see something bad happen to someone you don't care about. Some people have so much self-loathing that they feel like they need to grind people down just to have someone even more despised than them around. It would be sad if it weren't so damaging to those they inflict it upon.
