Bush says it will bring peace. Not everyone agrees.

Every other European country with a separatist movement (like Spain)is saying no to any formal recognition. They think it will bring the opposite of peace to their troubled lands.

Great, does this mean we can repatriate all the "refugees" in the U.S. back to Kosovo now that they have their own country?

LadyEllen -> RE: Bush recognizes independence of Kosovo from Serbia (2/19/2008 10:35:40 AM)

These things are difficult

We all want people to be able to decide their own future - so we should recognise Kosovo in the smaller picture

But we also need the region to settle down and meet EU accession criteria so that such issues become less important - so recognising Kosovo may not be beneficial to the bigger picture

LadyE, how about we send all the "refugees" from Kosovo in the U.S. over to England or Germany for a bit.
That way they'd be closer to their homeland.

Hmmmm... should anyone be forced to return to a place they had to escape from in the first place? I think that refugee status only lasts so long, and that after a little while it gets turned into a permanent residency status. Probably depends on the individual case.

What about the children who were born away from their parents' place of birth? What about those that came here as infants, and know of nothing else?

I doubt that a few thousands Kosovars will make much of a difference in the long run. And... I think that quite a few of us are direct descendants of refugees. Should we go back too?

If Bush says no..he admits the battle he fought is lost. He has to say yes.

KittinSol, according to the *Geneva Conventions* "refugees" can be repatriated back to their home countries once they have "stabilised."
Forming a country would certainly be considered being "stabilised!"
A lot of people complain that we don't follow the Geneva Conventions. Well here's a good chance to prove them wrong.
As for children born elsewhere while their parents were "refugees" they would simply follow their parents to their home countries.
The reason that we put Troops there Illegally I might add, is so those people could live in their own countries in peace.
To do otherwise would defeat the whole purpose, wouldn't it?
The Clinton Admin. did a lot of illegal stuff regarding "refugees". His "solution" was simply to let them remain in the U.S. like the 300,000 Haitian "refugees" because "their country is very poor."
With that criteria 3/4 of the Earth's population would "qualify" to come here!
If a country took me and my family in for ten years while my country became stabilised I'd be eternally grateful to them, not bad mouthing them when it was time to return to my stabilised country!

I watched an hour ling news show on this subject about a month ago. It sounded that there was a no win situation. The Serbs will not stand for this and the people of Kosovo will never ever trust the Serbs ever again. This at least starts the process to some relatively long term situation and hopefully stops the up in the air uncertainly and stagnation that has gone on for a decade.

The fact is this was not even remotely a surprise to anyone and we will see what happens once the posturing is done with.

Lady E,
Where is there an example of this, worldwide or in either of our respective countries?

There are elitists on both ends of the political spectrum that do not want majority rule, let alone individual people deciding their own fate. Whether the focus is sexual preference, or global warming the 'Good Intent-ors' push for their agenda contrary to your statement; "we all want people to be able to decide their own future".

I've determined that I'm more "liberal" than most espousing a their personal liberal bent. I do want people to be able to decide their own future, whether it be the Muslims in the Middle East or an 18 year old failing High School because they don't want to participate in the learning process. However I don't think I represent a majority.

If you think this quote used was taken out of context and not germane to the discussion, please disregard the question.

No thanks - we've got plenty already.

Sort of makes one wonder, given how many you have and we have and lots of other countries have.......... who on earth is left in Kosovo?

I am sure fast recognition by US was agreed between Kosovo and US officials before the declaration of independence.

Srebrenica isnt in Kosovo - but point taken; it was a silly joke

That's not the point, but you knew that.

KittenSol, and what was your point?

kittinSol -> RE: Bush recognizes independence of Kosovo from Serbia (2/19/2008 3:29:59 PM)

My point was that Kosovo is a war-thorn region where abhorrent massacres occurred. My point is that what happened at Srebrenica could well have happened in Kosovo (they came close to it). My point is that the Serbs were desperately close to fucking up Kosovo, and that the international community was quite prepared to stand by, and let it happen.

My point is that refugees never leave their homes with a song in their hearts, and that they're not here to steal your women, your jobs or your guns. The Kosovars you so lightly speak of left everything behind. They have nothing to go back to, and you happily propose they should be shipped back, en masse, with their children in tow?

KittenSol, and they go at it and somehow that's our fault?
And what is this "international community" stuff you talk of?
Are you saying that the E.U. should have "done something" about it?
Everyone says that the U.S. is a great country because we're a country of laws,...until they want something that is! Then, we're supposed to suspend the rule of law "for them.!"
And, you say these people have nothing? After being in the U.S. for ten years?
I highly doubt that! The whole reason for granting someone "refugee" status is to keep them safe from bodily harm not to enrich them!
The U.S. has done *way* more than it ever should have here and people *criticise us* for it!!!

They have "nothing to go back to?"
Ahhhh,...they have a new *COUNTRY* to go back to!

But NATO did step in, correct?

kittinSol -> RE: Bush recognizes independence of Kosovo from Serbia (2/19/2008 6:44:03 PM)

The situation is still volatile; it is not because Kosovo declared its independence that it'll be a smooth ride.

Serbia is going to do its damnedbest to oppose this. The game isn't over yet :-( .

luckydog1 -> RE: Bush recognizes independence of Kosovo from Serbia (2/19/2008 10:17:38 PM)

Here's a serious question for the Americans in the group....What about when this gets used by the American Indians?   I bet quite a few will want to change status.  I am all in favor of letting them decide.  I am relativly sure that most will choose to remain part of America, though many may want to take a status more like Samoa or Puerto Rico than they do now.  If they want to renounce thier citizenship, Declare Sovreignity, and make a final payment deal, thats ok too.  But I really doubt many would take it.

Now the Mexican Sepratists, are going to be a whole differnt problem....
