I never saw American Beauty but wasn't it released in 1999 or are you talking about another film entirely?

American Beauty ought to be mandatory viewing for all high school students.

I'm an arts fascist, I am.

PS: and yes, it's '99, not '91 (the aesthetic is obviously end of the millenium).

It's such a dark movie.  There is a lot to like about it.  But it's not for the faint of heart viewer, that's for sure.  Chris Cooper, he's good.

I like the music from it Dead Already, Music Paradiso but I've never seen the film due to lack of opportunity.

Rent it soon!  I don't think you'll be disappointed.  I should also add that I have weird taste in film.

You're thinking of the remake.  Lots of people make that mistake. The earlier Hollywood pic starred Oliver Reed, Sissy Spacek and Tracy Lord and is far superior.

This in itself is only a version of a German original starring Klaus and Nastassja Kinski with Charlotte Rampling although it suffers from low production values and the director Wim wenders nervous breakdown during filming due to his wife's infidelity with Lord.

I thought it could be something like that. They do say there are no new stories anymore.

One of my favorite movies....Can't see how the original could be better...He was killed by the neighbor who was played by Chris Cooper in this version. Chris Cooper is a pretty damn good character actor.

Everytime I watch it, my smile just gets bigger with each passing frame...Soooo fucked up and yet soooo beautiful.

A mirror of life and it isnt alwsy pretty but interesting. Show me a normal family and I will show you a sorry azz tribe of slackers-like the play "our town"

i have offbeat tastes in movies.   I love how the film mocks perfection!!  no one is perfect.

any movie recommendations?

One of the best ever. Dark, yes, but the relationshop between the daughter and the neighbor boy...I don't know exactly why but it rang some bells in me. Everything about American Beauty just blows me away every time I see it.

Magnolia had a very similar effect on me and, again, I don't know exactly why.

Speaking of the Coen brothers, I went to see No Country for Old Men - it rocks (have they ever done a bad movie?).

It was the neighbor.I think he was gay and in the closet for way to long.

I think he projected that his son was also gay and fooling with  Spacey`s character.
