What is the difference between a Phill and a Philly?
People stop caring when they became overworked and underpaid.  At least that's my theory.
Around here..restaurant workers...good paid ones make 3 dollars an hour.  They have to rely on tips to make more.
Problem is..as I've been told by the old timers..is it is not right to tip.  So most don't.  Even the kids they are bringing up they aren't teaching to tip.
So, why should they slave to death for what..100 and some change a week?

I am amazed these places can find people at all to work.

          I was sitting at the counter in a local restaurant (Not going to mention the name* puts on red and white checkered overalls and hold up a giant cheeseburger*wink*) reading a paper and awaiting for my order, a Philly Chicken Sandwich, no onions, with barbecue sauce. When I get my order it’s a Phill Cheese Steak Sandwich, the close but no cigar/ (which reminds me *lights up*) She checked her order slip and yes it said Philly Chicken Sandwich. I wait and she brings me the right order, but it has onions and no BBQ. I’m fine with it I just scraped them off (Onions give me some real bad gas, this is the kind gas Saddam would sniff and say “Man that’s just cruel.”) and ordered some sauce, which took long that waiting for my sandwich.
         
When I finally got to eat I turned around on my stool and just watched the other waiters and occupants of the place doing their thing. The people where loud obnoxious and rude, the waiters where brainless, half assing their orders talking to one another, and cleaning off tables only when they ran out of clean ones. I thought to my self “Surly not all restaurants aren’t like this, are they?”  So I toured the “eat and greet” circuit, visiting four towns and drive an hour out of my way to a city and popped into eight different places. (A few of them nice)

Every where was the same people half assing their jobs. As I stood in line for the buffet at Ryan’s (Basically like a golden coral to those of you who don’t know what it is) I realized that it wasn’t just waiters doing crap jobs it was everyone every where. No one takes pride in anything any more. No one tries to be the best at their craft anymore. Its sad. No wonder jobs are going overseas, people are filing complaints about every thing under the sun, it’s because people have stopped trying.

I remember when I was about 4 or 5 I would watch my grandfather do a wide variety of things from trimming Bonsai trees to fixing plumbing to even such things as sewing. Never once did he leave something half done of shoddily made or fixed, he made sure it was done right and done perfect. No one could match him in the perfection of his martial arts training.

When did people stop striving for perfection? The 90’s when every one got lazy and just sat at home playing on the internet? The 80’s watching all those sitcoms? (YAY Family Matters) All that LSD in the 70’s? Or was in the Hippies fault back in the 60’s? What made us stop caring?

Now I know a lot of you are just saying “shut up asshole your just pissed she got you order wrong”. No really look at people today and see how many people you can find who actually work at what they do then compare those few people to the countless thousands who don’t.

A few years ago, I was out of town, it was 2 am and I was hungry. I pulled into a Denny's and took a seat at the counter.
The place was jammed there were probably 25 tables all full. While I waited for the waitress I could see the cook in the kitchen. He was on the phone saying" well if he wants his job he had better get in here". I noticed that there were 2 waitresses and this guy cooking. I watched him calmly cook breakfast after breakfast and asking for " bacon sets"?.
A fair number of the customers where complaining and it took longer than usual to get my order. I just sat there drinking coffee and watching him. He kept his temper and kept the waitresses calm, It was really something to see. Here was a man, about 40  and the night manager at Denny's.  Thats probably not how most of us would envision success. But he was so cool and so smooth. When I had finished eating I left a nice tip and waved as I walked out. He smiled and waved back.

To answer the post, it isn;t everywhere and it isn't every one. When I am having a shitty day I think about that guy alot. It oddly inspiring

Actually, if a server is not making minimum wage after tips are figured in their wage has to be adjusted.  The place I work the waitresses make a lot more per night than I do, even on a slow night.  It depends on what sort of restaurant it is, but the better the restaurant the better the tips generally.
