joanus -> RANTZILLA! (2/15/2008 10:50:14 AM)

What is wrong with people today? Why does no one seem to be out for their self betterment? When did people stop taking pride in their work?

           I was sitting at the counter in a local restaurant (Not going to mention the name* puts on red and white checkered overalls and hold up a giant cheeseburger*wink*) reading a paper and awaiting for my order, a Philly Chicken Sandwich, no onions, with barbecue sauce. When I get my order it’s a Phill Cheese Steak Sandwich, the close but no cigar/ (which reminds me *lights up*) She checked her order slip and yes it said Philly Chicken Sandwich. I wait and she brings me the right order, but it has onions and no BBQ. I’m fine with it I just scraped them off (Onions give me some real bad gas, this is the kind gas Saddam would sniff and say “Man that’s just cruel.”) and ordered some sauce, which took long that waiting for my sandwich.

When I finally got to eat I turned around on my stool and just watched the other waiters and occupants of the place doing their thing. The people where loud obnoxious and rude, the waiters where brainless, half assing their orders talking to one another, and cleaning off tables only when they ran out of clean ones. I thought to my self “Surly not all restaurants aren’t like this, are they?”  So I toured the “eat and greet” circuit, visiting four towns and drive an hour out of my way to a city and popped into eight different places. (A few of them nice)

Every where was the same people half assing their jobs. As I stood in line for the buffet at Ryan’s (Basically like a golden coral to those of you who don’t know what it is) I realized that it wasn’t just waiters doing crap jobs it was everyone every where. No one takes pride in anything any more. No one tries to be the best at their craft anymore. Its sad. No wonder jobs are going overseas, people are filing complaints about every thing under the sun, it’s because people have stopped trying.

I remember when I was about 4 or 5 I would watch my grandfather do a wide variety of things from trimming Bonsai trees to fixing plumbing to even such things as sewing. Never once did he leave something half done of shoddily made or fixed, he made sure it was done right and done perfect. No one could match him in the perfection of his martial arts training.

When did people stop striving for perfection? The 90’s when every one got lazy and just sat at home playing on the internet? The 80’s watching all those sitcoms? (YAY Family Matters) All that LSD in the 70’s? Or was in the Hippies fault back in the 60’s? What made us stop caring?

Now I know a lot of you are just saying “shut up asshole your just pissed she got you order wrong”. No really look at people today and see how many people you can find who actually work at what they do then compare those few people to the countless thousands who don’t.

sub4hire -> RE: RANTZILLA! (2/15/2008 12:48:44 PM)

What is the difference between a Phill and a Philly?
People stop caring when they became overworked and underpaid.  At least that's my theory.
Around here..restaurant workers...good paid ones make 3 dollars an hour.  They have to rely on tips to make more.
Problem is..as I've been told by the old timers..is it is not right to tip.  So most don't.  Even the kids they are bringing up they aren't teaching to tip.
So, why should they slave to death for what..100 and some change a week?

I am amazed these places can find people at all to work.

Nineveh -> RE: RANTZILLA! (2/15/2008 12:51:17 PM)

I take pride in my work.  I am a Sommelier and I am very proud and careful about what I do.  Unfortuantely the place I work there are too many of us in my position (it's a windery, thus the need for more than one sommelier) which means I get very few hours, my boss is in her position because she is friends with the boss and thus the fact that customers prefer me and I sell more wine is irrelevent and I get as few hours as anyone else because she is trying to be fair instead of trying to be a good manager.  I still take pride in my work, but as that seems almost completely irrelevent to my supervisor and the owner of the place I work it does make it that much more difficult.

DaddyAndCarina -> RE: RANTZILLA! (2/15/2008 12:54:46 PM)

Actualy  the last place I worked as a waitress ... the boss sucked  paid you  when he got around to it but I worked weekends only ... it was a beach type place  but I cleared about 500 a day  and yes I was dressed ... I think it is just  different times ... I  take pride in the things I do ...  my son however only  makes sure his scan rate is good and he smiles ... he doesnt pride his self on his How are you today  maam or the way he sacks things .. Meat on the new white towels .....  We can try to instill pride of self in them ... doesnt mean it is going to take

Actually, if a server is not making minimum wage after tips are figured in their wage has to be adjusted.  The place I work the waitresses make a lot more per night than I do, even on a slow night.  It depends on what sort of restaurant it is, but the better the restaurant the better the tips generally.

Lumus -> RE: RANTZILLA! (2/15/2008 12:58:59 PM)

There's times at work when I look like I'm slacking...it's usually because I'm managing a breath after performing twelve different tasks at once.

As usual, joanus, it's all about perception.  Before judging something:

1.  Do it yourself.  If you do better, you may have reason to judge harshly.
2.  Observe for more than five minutes.  A snapshot of anything is hardly telling.
3.  Give people allowance to be human.  Everyone screws up eventually.

Conclusions rushed are often sloppy and inaccurate.  Sampling numerous restaurants for a few moments, instead of watching one all night, doesn't improve your chances of better understanding the business.

It's great that your grandpappy was a hard worker.  I think he might have done well to instill some patience in you, but if he tried, it didn't take...as usual, you're barking just to bark.

On a serious note...why do you need so much attention?

LadyEllen -> RE: RANTZILLA! (2/15/2008 1:11:43 PM)

a friend of mine started a new job recently - in aerospace engineering. "great" thought he "finally, a place where professionalism and dedication are required - and the money's good"

anyway, he nearly quit after two months. He was deeply unhappy with it and the casual attitude towards the work shown by everyone from top to bottom. He's the sort that throws himself into his work, thrives on being as professional and dedicated as its possible to be - and it drove him to distraction that this wasnt how it was.

I told him straight not to quit. Instead, stay there and relax - the distress he was feeling was all his own doing. If the rest dont give a shit, then why should you drive yourself daft kicking against the pricks? So, he has relaxed and is going with the lacksadaisical attitude that surrounds him, not doing anything more than the minimum- just like the rest. And he's now adjusted and is happy.

Only thing being that he found out why that attitude prevails. The company was bought out not long before he joined it, by a US company that only wants the technologies theyve developed - its reckoned that within two years they'll know all they need to and then the jobs will be exported to China.

Why give a flying fuck, if youre so disposable they can telegraph it to you years in advance, let alone if youre so disposable you can be fired anytime in the next hour?

E

A few years ago, I was out of town, it was 2 am and I was hungry. I pulled into a Denny's and took a seat at the counter.
The place was jammed there were probably 25 tables all full. While I waited for the waitress I could see the cook in the kitchen. He was on the phone saying" well if he wants his job he had better get in here". I noticed that there were 2 waitresses and this guy cooking. I watched him calmly cook breakfast after breakfast and asking for " bacon sets"?.
A fair number of the customers where complaining and it took longer than usual to get my order. I just sat there drinking coffee and watching him. He kept his temper and kept the waitresses calm, It was really something to see. Here was a man, about 40  and the night manager at Denny's.  Thats probably not how most of us would envision success. But he was so cool and so smooth. When I had finished eating I left a nice tip and waved as I walked out. He smiled and waved back.

To answer the post, it isn;t everywhere and it isn't every one. When I am having a shitty day I think about that guy alot. It oddly inspiring

the OP is correct.  when i stand in line ild like to pay and get out. not kid around and kill time.  wies has alot of employees stnding around that frankly are just in the way.  of course nothing is anyones department, and the price the scanner claims is always right.  people over 40 cant read the fine print on coupons which expire fast.

GreedyTop -> RE: RANTZILLA! (2/15/2008 6:22:39 PM)

I work in customer service.  I get paid quite a bit less than what I should be getting in this market (based on skills, and seniority). I'm very much an advocate of good service, despite that.
I see it like this: *I* am the first face the guest sees when they arrive here.  If I've had a bad day, it's my job to make sure the guest doesn't know about it. My job is to make their stay here as pleasant and trouble free as possible.
Smile, answer questions, even do stuff that is "not my job" (guest needs extra towels?  Fine, when I'm able to leave the desk, I'll take the guest the towels.  Having problems getting into a parking spot - our parking lot is small with tight spots - volunteer to park it for them..stuff like that).
There is NO EXCUSE for being rude, disrespectful, or unmindful of the guests needs, I don't care HOW crappy the pay is, or what kind of day one has had. The customer is the one who, ultimately, pays you.

That being said, I have noticed that good service seems to be less emphasised than it used to be. Nowadays it seems like the person who DOES offer good service stands out more than the one who doesn't.

Just my .05

SubbieOnWheels -> RE: RANTZILLA! (2/15/2008 9:56:12 PM)

A friend of mine had an incident with a hotel desk clerk with an attitude. After the situation was cleared up, my friend said to the clerk, "Just remember something: the customer may not always be right, but the customer is always the customer."

GreedyTop -> RE: RANTZILLA! (2/15/2008 10:38:23 PM)

ooh... that is SO true...
And in all realms of commerce, a dissatisfied customer will tell more people about a negative experience than a positive one.

It must be different depending on what country of the 50 you live in under this grand country.  Yes, I feel we live in 50 different countries here the laws are so diverse from state to state its ridiculous.
Here..and in California you made what you made.  I'm not sure exactly how much minimum wage for a waitress was in California but it was well under the state approved minimum wage.  There are two minimum wages.
No tips needed and no employers had to make up for anything not made.

jadedserendipity -> RE: RANTZILLA! (2/16/2008 1:59:23 PM)

I work as a waitress and I work in a pleasant Italian restaurant, we are a major chain and are in I am almost certain every state in the country....... Having said all of this, you might think oh lovely a chain, yes I know, and while I cannot speak for every restaurant, I can speak for mine. For the most part our entire staff is pleasant, attentive,  and caring we tend to exude that period........... We do not come in with attitudes and show them to any customer, I deal with some Rude ASSHOLES every single day, but I never lose my temper with a guest, make snide remarks, or slack in my job. I can also say the same goes for those with whom I work...... I do not write orders, I never make mistakes at least not with orders, my food does not leave the kitchen unless it is perfect, I do not allow it to sit in the window, once my order is up, I have it to the table in under a minute and a half ALWAYS. I do not slack, I make a connection with every guest I have everyday......

You wanna come visit my restaurant before you make such a generalization? And above that, maybe you should walk a day in my shoes, My days are 10 hours minimum busting my ass all day long to please EVERY guest who comes in........ Have you ever been a server? How many hours did you spend at these restaurants you visited? Why do you make sweeping generalizations about the world at large when you focus on such a tiny area? How on Earth do you assume we all have no concern for our job and are giving it all half ass efforts?

And I will seriously let you walk a day in my shoes any damn time you please....

DesFIP -> RE: RANTZILLA! (2/16/2008 3:33:16 PM)

I live in a small town. The kids working the local Burger King? My kids know half of them. We ask them how they are, and because we chat with the ones we know, we also chat with the ones we don't know. I don't get bad service because I'm not a bad customer. I don't treat them like robots so they don't treat me as though they want me to disappear.

It goes both ways.
