the question: Has anyone ever heard of "mayday" being used as a safeword meant for general intervention from those who might not be involved with the scene?

a friend said he came across the idea presented in a BDSM book.  I don't know what book or where this came from and have never heard anything else about it since. so i'm just curious if anyone has ever heard of this (or would like to comment on the idea of it)

as he described it to me: Mayday is reserved for intervention when a) the dominant is going to far and is not heading a safeword. b) the dominant may have left, gone to get something not standing close enough or not paying attention ect.
basically "Mayday" means "i'm asking for anyone who can hear this to help me.

so would anyone even react if person started calling out "mayday" does it sound like a good idea to push for public play spaces and educational groups to start spreading the word.
While i'm sure it would be very rarely used. it sounds good in theory.

Cheers

Actually, I've not heard of this, but it does seem like a great idea...

"mayday" is an anglicized version of the French m'aidez (help me) or m'aider (to render help to me).

repeated three times and with some other info it is an international symbol of ships at sea in distress, as is SOS dit dit dit dah dah dah dit dit dit ...---...

Just as good as 'afganistan bannana stand' I suppose.

Only on a boat....

The standard, if there is one, is green=good or yes, yes, yes! Yellow=change it up or down, do a check, Red=MAYDAY! Or, stop now.

Welcome ya dirty unvirgin.

Yes.  I have heard of it.  And have been at a party where it was needed and utilized.
I have mentioned this theory on another thread regarding safewords.  The idea was not well received.
But, I digress.
In any event, I subscibe to it and have seen it needed when a Dominant got lost in their "topspace."

Where is this "general safeword" being used?

If it's in the mainstream public, I think "HELP" works pretty damned well.

If it's at a play party or club you need to use their safewords or the DMs will not understand what you are doing. They have a lot to keep track of the party/club word is there to specifically draw their attention.

the problem with help is that it could be taken to be part of the scene (kinda like saying no when they really mean yes).  I think the idea Skully was trying to put across was how about implementing the word mayday as the dungeon safeword..
but I could be wrong.. :)

I don't think that trying to establish an international safewords for play parties and club is very likely to work.

I strongly believe that if you go into a club or a party you MUST follow the rules the hosts have established. They've put the rules into effect for good reasons and they will have trained (to some degree) their DMs on these. Using other terms is only likely to cause miscommunication when communication may be seriously needed.

Good Idea, however most clubs I have been to here in Florida, have their own safeword that says to the DM's, need help over here. Welcome to the original poster side It's the Dark side of the Forums..

If I heard 'Mayday' being hollered it would indeed attract my attention faster than 'no' or 'stop' in a scene. To me it is a stronger general call for help.

Why do people need special words?  Can't they simply say "stop" or "you are going too far"? or "you are assaulting me".  I've never understood the entire safe word thing.

Because some people like to be able say your above words but have them ignored in the context of BDSM. It is an emotional and sexual charge for them to do that.

If those words don't have a positive charge for you when they are ignored, use them as your safeword.

The point is to have communication that draws the immediate attention of the top (or DM in a public space) and allow the bottom to play with words that have sexual charges for them.

For example I once had a partner who was a heavy masochist and he loved to swear in scene and beg me to stop -- however he didn't want me to stop. When he said "Badger" I knew he wanted me to stop. So he could scream and yell and wiggle all he wanted but his safeword was a like being hit on the head with a hammer and I would have stopped had he used it.

Yeah.. I agree about following the rules.  But if someone regularly goes to multiple play spaces, and all those play spaces have different designated safewords.. I can see a situation where a sub could possibly forget WHICH dungeon/WHICH safeword...lol  Trying to get mayday implemented would prevent that.. :)
Not that I expect that to ever happen, but in theory it seems like a good idea to me.

In thoery yes, but since it is face to face, it means you gotta check in with the 'rules committee'. so that has its charms too.

Red: being a safeword between the dom and the sub.

Mayday: being a word to call anyone who can hear it to help. either because the dom isn't listening or the dom doesn't care or the dom isn't around.

Using no and stop can be part of a scene,  Using the streetlight colors is common for dungeon play and most dungeon masters would stop play if Red was called,  in private party or dungeon play you may want to have a word that only your Dom knows,  especially if you are relatively new as a sub and may be relunctant to use Red to stop a scene in a crowd...  as the sub  may feel like  they letting their Dom down, embarrassing  infront of his friends by calling out Red , so having a secret word to end play  that nobody else knows can be a way a around, and it has to be a word that would not be used in normal conversation or likely to come out in a scene,  at least this was what my first Dom discussed with me saying that too often subs were reluctant to use Red in public, so we had decided on the word turtle for our secret word  that would indicate I want to  subtly bring a scene to an end,  I was still free to use Red if I wanted, the use of the word turtle just meant I wanted to end it more discreetly.

I guess it might work if you got everyone on board. This is an excerpt from the rules for the main dungeon here in town:  If you observe a scene in progress where you feel safety guidelines are not being followed or the Top is inadequately experienced, inform the DM or your concerns immediately. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO STOP THE SCENE YOURSELF. I'm guessing that other public dungeons have similar procedures. I have a hard time believing that many would opt for this type of self policing during play parties. Considering the tame nature of most of the play I have witnessed publicly and the potential for this plan to go astray I would trend away from it myself.
