But you are going for custody of your kid, it's probably worth it to spend some money to make sure you get to court on time.  Grab an extra job for a few months to pay for the airfare.  Sell some belongings you don't need.

If you can't afford to get to the custody hearing, can you actually afford to financially support a child?

i am restraining myself in responding to some of these posts since anything i say at this point would be foolish, incoherant and emotional outbursts that would feed the flaming that would follow.

Im sorry to hear you missed your hearing... but have to say that .. it seems that something this important ... you would have made sure you were early or would have had a back up plan... I hope you can work it out

I'm not trying to be inflamatory - it just seems to me that taking care of a child is much more expensive than say, gas or airfare to get to a custody hearing.

Raising a child is a HUGE responsibility, financially and otherwise.

I heard him say these trips were many, not few: the expense adds up does it not?  So, minimizing the expense is one way of maximizing the money you have available to care for the child. Sounds smart to me. Good for you trying to outwit the bus system!  It can be done - someone earlier in the thread gave some decent advice.  Here is more along the same lines from one who has been there done that:

You can get a letter from Greyhound saying you had a ticket but they were unable to provide.  Your attorney may know that some judges take this sort of letter into consideration.  You are not at all alone- Greyhound books to capacity and beyond all the time. It can be very frustrating.  Using the bus for anything other than causal travel is risky.  Sometimes you have to stand in line, or sit on a stone floor, for hours to ensure that you WILL get on THIS particular bus.  The process, and the rules, are pretty abusive.  Maybe it will be easier when you think of the kid, and keep thinking of the kid, as you struggle with it.  I always have stuff to read with me, it helps kill the boredom.

Booking 7 or more days in advance and going down to the station to get the ticket is the cheapest. But if I had to do time- critical travel again, I would book an earlier bus on the way out, in case I simply could not get on it, and put up with the hardship of trying to park myself someplace until the hearing. When the next earliest bus is a whole day before, that truly sucks.  In that case I would check out craigslist for crash space, network through friends, whatever you can do to get a perch until the hearing. It's all worth the time to research.

I wonder that myself....

Greyhound's inconveniences are balanced by the fact that it is fairly cheap - I guess it depends on how much your time is worth.    But I would have thought anyone taking it knows that if you book, make sure that you get down there extremely early and just be prepared to wait....doubly so if it were so critical to get on that bus.

Alternatively, drive to where ever you are going.

Dont you guys have the likes of Ryan Air over there in the US? ie low cost budget airlines?

If we need to go anywhere (almost) in Europe, we have several means of doing so - bus, personal car, train or plane

Going by plane by one of the low cost operators is ridiculously cheap - the airport taxes are sometimes all one pays, with the ticket itself costing a penny or some such amount. Yes, youre crammed in (but no different to the bus or train) and you dont have your car when you get there (but thats what Hertz are for!) and its much cheaper and quicker than any other means.

There actually are a lot of cheap airline prices if you search for them correctly and book early enough, especially if you're flying mid-week.   I don't know that it's cheaper than the bus or Amtrak though.

No, we don't have anything as cheap as a bus.  The only thing that would be cheaper would be getting a friend to drive him down there.
There are cheap airline prices, that however is if you book a long time in advance..and still yet the cheapest ticket you'd find is going to be more expensive than the bus by at least 2 to 3 fold.
Trains don't run everywhere..and the last time I was on a train it was the same price as a plane.
I've put people on buses.  The last time was a year ago...I was told at that time you could go anywhere in the country for 68 dollars as long as you booked 3 months in advance.

It's not.  There's only one option for someone flying from CSG to OKC and back, and it's not cheap.  Buying the tickets a month in advance, he would be looking at $500 RT rather than around $100 for bus tickets purchased a week in advance.  Slamtrack doesn't appear to have a station close enough to be a viable option.

Well I hope it works out for him.  Judges, court officials, don't look kindly on parents missing court appointments for their kids, it sends an unfortunate message and it makes the one who shows up look pretty good in comparison.

I am gonna say this in the most positive fashion I know, Mike. I admire your wanting to do the fatherly thing.

With your depression, and with your monetary troubles, and with your fragile psyche, unless she is booting smack in front of them, or their lives are in danger (both of which I doubt) it may be that until you can get yourself positioned quite a bit better off in life than you are now, they are best to remain with their mom.
