Level -> Georgia wants to move border with Tennessee (2/9/2008 6:30:02 AM)

COLE CITY HOLLOW, Tennessee - Nearly two centuries after a flawed survey placed Georgia's northern line just short of the Tennessee River, some legislators are suddenly thirsting to set the record straight.

A historic drought has added urgency to Georgia's generations-old claim that its territory ought to extend about a mile farther north than it does and reach into the Tennessee — a river with about 15 times greater flow than the one Atlanta depends on for its water.

"It's never too late to right a wrong," said Georgia state Sen. David Shafer, whose bill would create a boundary line commission that aims to resolve the dispute.

Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen's reaction: "This is a joke, right?"

Well, I see their point. Aren't rivers and other natural bodies of water the traditional, natural boundaries for political divisions?

Of course, my sympathy is tempered by my desire to express the simple thought of "Fuck Atlanta"....

Interesting Times, indeed. What will the National Guard do when the GA State Militia occupies the disputed territory?

 A river usuing defines an area. who owns it when it floods for miles around?  who pays insurnce? who maintains it?  nevermind

Indeed, that was my first thought as well (after all, much of Georgia's eastern border is the Savannah River), but then i read more of the article:

quote:

If Tennessee's southern border were the 35th parallel — as Congress designated in 1796 —Georgia would have a share of the Tennessee River. But a surveying team sent by Georgia to chart the line in 1818 was a bit off the mark.

Interesting issue... i don't know what the historical precedent might say. Wouldn't be surprised if it ends up in the Supreme Court, with the stakes involved.

What's all this federal bulls**t anyway? Merge them all states, I say. One nation, one union, one soil.

Would you like to include New Hampshire in that? Of course not, but if you were a southerner, you wouldn't be so flippant with regards to merging the southern states. Gee let's have another civil war, shall we? Maybe another 600,000 dead, including 3 of pup's ancestors.

GA has always been a little strange in my book.   Back in the very early 80's they banned all religious books because they were pornographic.

This was a fine example of European sarcasm, and of an earnest American response [:D] .

Before anyone makes any judgments of me, i am a historian and a reenactor and i portray BOTH Union and Confederate troops during the Civil War.

<jumps into my Confederate Uniform and grabs my 1855 Springfield> Let's Take em' Boys! <rides up and down the battle line on my horse> They may take our water, but they will never take OUR FREEDOM!!!!!!

THE LAST ONE TO NASHVILLE IS A RADICAL REPUBLICAN!!!!!!!!!!

If Georgia got the line in the wrong place in the first place, I say its a little late for them to go back and saw WHOOPS. Its not like Tennessee went out there, nudged the line over a bit so they could get bigger...

Yes they did! They nudge that line over! The gravitational pull of Dolly Parton has thrown off the border of Ga. and Tn.! [sm=shake.gif]

I still say GO TITANS!!

Why am I picturing a sceen from 200 years ago....

.....a couple of rednecks, drunk on moonshine, giggling and shushing each other, going around moving stakes that mark the state line in the middle of the night....

MistressOfGa -> RE: Georgia wants to move border with Tennessee (2/9/2008 8:49:50 AM)

~~~~~~~fr~~~~~~~~~
In Cole City Hollow, an obscure border community where some northwest Georgia residents rely on Tennessee roads, the river is so close to crossing the state line it almost juts into the yard of a Georgia house.
You think that Ga. and TN. are bad...I could cast my fishing line out the Savannah river from SC. and hit Ga.! Georgia may not be growing into my backyard, but I seem to be catching alot of fish from Georgia, when I am sitting on my dock in SC.
I say, if I can reach it, it is MINE! <s>
Atlanta and Georgia could just try and control and better plan growth rather than letting exurban subdivisions go up as fast as the land can be bought. There is only so much water in the Chatahoochee even in wet years and well drilling is very expensive in the area.
MsSonnetMarwood,
Them there weren't no rednecks! Those be poloticians I tell ya!
Sheesh what we wouldn't do to get water in today's world. Whatever are we thinking? Water? We are in a drought, come on neighbor, won't you help a sista out?
I agree, but how does a state stop unemployed women from having babies and calling on welfare to help those women feed them? How can the state stop illegal immigrants from entering the country and then have card blanc to obtaining a drivers license without an ID or social security card? (Happens in TN.) While those who live and work in Tn. have to stand in lines outside the DMV for hours while the illegals take advantage of getting a license that basically tells employers that they have a right to work in this country.
They can't plan and control anything. Much less the land in which they have welcomed illegals to take up residence, without regards to the over-population crisis that they are having.
ETA: I have lived in both states, so I know first hand about the lines outside of the DMV in TN. I waited for almost 5 hours behind illegals to get my license renewed. Most couldn't even speak english, or drive a car. Talk about a bad day.[8|]
pupofMoGa -> RE: Georgia wants to move border with Tennessee (2/9/2008 9:12:07 AM)
Who said it was Georgia surveyors that got it wrong in the first place, they were probably Tennessee sympathizers anyways.
I believe if the original survey was wrong, then it should be corrected. Just because someone made a mistake doesnt mean that is shouldnt be corrected, no matter if it is almost 200 years ago.
I grew up in suburban Atlanta and saw what I'm talking about first hand. Atlanta and the surrounding counties have failed to plan growth and no amount of whining and blaiming it all on illegals can change that. BTW which illegals are buying those houses going up on the outer edge on Gwinnet? How about the ones out at the far end of GA 400? How about those new subdivisions in Newton? Illegal aliens simply don't matter in the grand scheme of uncontrolled growth in the Atlanta region.
