Like most things, some parties are better than others, same goes for hosts. I have been to events with chocolate fountains, catered food that were boring (and some that were amazing) and I have been tiny get togethers that will forever be seared into memory.

Parties are often what you make of them but I do enjoy them.

I was thinking about providing a Dungeon 101 type class for the newest or newer people... to help them learn more about the dungeon, what can be done with equipment, etiquette and respect of other's space, etc.

Some other people in the organization I work with are interested in doing this as well.

Starting out slowly is always wise. Another thing I like to do is correspond with the newer people via email prior to them attending a party. That way, they feel like they know someone and I think it helps a little.

I was sitting next to a young girl once, she was nervous and had tears in her eyes.. so I sat with her, partly to help her calm down, but also to be protective. Sometimes new people dont understand they have a right to say no. I do believe I was able to help her.

I like going to play parties and socials because 1.) it allows me to meet real life people who share my interests and 2.) it gives me a change to watch others indulge in BDSM activities that are real, not that fake (but enjoyable to watch too) stuff you see in the porn movies.

We love play parties. Ours generally are either potluck (Bring a dish) or maybe a $5 donation at the door to cover food and drinks.

Why do we love them? It's a time to see friends and socialize, see new things, try out toys and equipment we don't have at home, and maybe even meet something we want to ravage :)

Oh my I'm so resisting the rants between the lifestyle scene and the fetishist/club scene.
I love going to clubs with the fetishists (aka the SM'ers...Stand and Model) but the play is usually sub par. but the outfits are amazing and I do have alot of fun with some really cool people at some great clubs great music dancing enjoying drinks (and until recently smoking) there is definitly a bit of attitude and not very welcoming of new people(unless of course you look absolutely fabulous or know the right people) the sketchy male factor is pretty low.

then you have Paddles which I love the venuelove the layout and the equipment and lighting. Hate the fact that there is no liquor. I admit it. I don't want to get drunk but I do want to enjoy a drink. I also want good quality music. hire a DJ. the music being played is alright but it is more or less just shuffled. a true DJ part caters to the audience part controls the audience. A true DJ sets the mood and atmosphere of the place. there is also a lack of clothing style! listen if you plan on getting naked. by all means show up in a pair of jeans or sweats I don't care. but seriously...you are going out to a social gathering. put some effort into what you wear. Gawker level is High! and while most are respectful the abundance of them hurts the vibe. Also the age range. I've admitted that I like older women and I am a generally mature person(silly sometimes but definitly mature) but when the average age of the night is 45-55 with a VAST majority falling within that range. then again it affects the vibe.

Private parties: I love them but they need to either be with predominantly close friends. or large enough that I don't feel out of place and go into wall flower mode. if the party is big enough then there will be plenty of people playing and talking and lounging and whatever. so its easy to catch people inbetween scene and just chill. play if I/We want or have the opportunity.
I hate being 1-2 people not playing while the other 12 are.

then there are munches and seminars... I attend as much as possible. I like meeting new people and I love learning new things.

to OP: I like Munches that really work towards introducing everyone. I've been to munches where you just show up and sit down and mingle... woo. exciting... good munches have someone (host/organizer) introduce themself have everyone else introduce themselves. perhaps bring up some topics to get the ball rollings ect.

I did munches for about a year, they were very quiet and nice, most knew each other I think-I knew no one though so I was pretty nervous lol. Not too sure about clubs, never been to any but from what I've seen (in magazines like Skin two) they're full of very glam people all dressed up, Im not very good looking and cant afford the outfits,even if I could I couldn't wear them because Im not normal sized! lol so I may not go to any.

I went to My first ever fetish fair in january and had such a good time I was in a really good mood all week lol. I'd go to play parties if I had the chance, but only if I knew at least 1 or 2 there otherwise I'd look silly in the corner smiling like an idiot.

I agree with you about people not being allowed to smoke-I don't smoke but I think its rediculous to stop others just because some dont like it-they should have the brains to provide somewhere for people to smoke, and not outside in the snow,rain etc. I mean a well ventilated room somewhere.

Public play parties - see old friends, meet new people, watch technique, learn cool new tricks, socialize with people where I'm not the freak of the crowd, show off new fet wear, find where others' got their new fet wear, play with different people and learn more about myself and reactions, watch my man play with others, great demos or seminars on various implements or scenes, new scene ideas, try out different implements before I run out and just have to have it...lol.

The DM's are usually very aware of what's going on everywhere and I like the feeling of safety they give. People are screened/interviewed before allowed in to keep it SSC. All in all, just a fun atmosphere, very relaxed.
