time for me to upgrade my 5 yr old phone...got me one of them old nokia phones way back when video and internet browsing first came available here...

so...what kind of phone should i get now??? i need one that will work any where i am.  no static and as clear as possible.

is there a particular brand that is better than another? or are they all pretty standard now? is there a brand to stay clear of?

i dont know much about new features on phones...i dont need a whole lot though.  a good camera maybe for when i travel... it doesnt need music.  i do like to txt...but all phones do that...

I have had the best luck with Motorola.  I've had a couple of Nokias, wasn't especially impressed.  Had a samsung that I liked (hated the provider though).  I'm on my third Motorola, and as long as I don't drop THIS one in a glass of beer (long story), I expect it to last a loooong time.

I'm far from an expert - my favorite was a cheapo LG - it was very user friendly, and everything worked fine. I tragically lost him in a washing machine accident. RIP LG. I have a Razr now - and it's pretty, and pink, but I can't figure out how to use it. I was in a Sprint store with a friend, and they sell Razr's and even they couldn't figure out how to turn the speakerphone off!

In terms of clarity - at least here- it all depends on your carrier. US Cellular has the best quality where I live because they have towers here.

Edited for typo.

GreedyTop...got insurance on your phone through your provider? It's dirt cheap and there's a mighty good chance that your phone would be replaced even if you dropped it into a mug of brew...my ex dropped his into a puddle and didn't notice it had been submerged for more than five minutes. A quick call (on another phone ;)) and a new phone was in his hot hand the very next day - no charges at all...

If you like to text, you might consider a phone with a complete key  board which makes it a LOT easier to text on.   My boss had an LG enV and it was really nice on many levels.

If you want a cheap phone that does everything you described, I run a LG VX8300 that was free with my contract and I have been happy with it.

On the subject of coverage and the like, it's not the phone that matters.  It's the provider.   I used to travel a LOT with work and was assigned a variety of phones/ carriers.  Verizon is by far the best for coverage and service.

I use an Iphone. I was very skeptical when they first came out (and no I was not a $599 sucker) but when the price came down, and I lost my old phone, I went ahead and bit the bullet and I've never been sorry. Moving between wifi networks is seamless, and after using the interface other phone interfaces seem annoying. Plus they add a lot of features at each update, much better than any other phone I have used. I give it 2 thumbs up.

Ahhh.....The good old bag phones.

I can remember sitting on the tool box in the back of the truck with the phone on the roof so I could get reception.   On yeah, stay away from the pine trees......They're the WORST for blocking reception.

Maybe I am getting old, but I find so many of the functions of a modern cell phone superfluous, and when my SE P900 dies, well to say, I hope it does'nt as I will be lost.

Now my P900 is a G3 smart phone/PDA, it is a fantastic device, but I only use a small proportion of it, mainly for carrying a digital portfolio of my art work around  and text functions of which it is very good, as it has a touch screen and virtual qwerty keyboard operated by a stylus. Oh, and it has the ability to put filters on incoming calls, withheld numbers are automatically screened and a lot of advertising calls.

The best display of it's functions came when I got asked to make something based upon a tattoo, which was on a Domme's breast, I with the phone photographed the tattoo, and with that photo drew on it in the image editor with the stylus as to what the lady wanted doing with that design along with written notes which were saved for my later thoughts.

The downside, battery life is apalling, and it is bulky, a plus is I got it for nothing a few years ago in replacement for my old and basic Nokia.

A phone to avoid, well a phone is a phone, now they are all much the same. Only one negative I have is Motorolas, some of them have lousy on board memory, Bluetooth transfers takes ages with one of them.

i'd recommend letstalk.com as a phone source... same website used by walmart.com and nokia.com, just cheaper if you go directly. Beats hell out of carrier websites, which in turn beat hell out of the brick & mortar stores.

Can't say much about particular phones except that the UI on the SonyEricsson phone i had sucked ass, and i'll never buy another one.

The areas the phone works in, and the quality of the signal tends to depend more on the carrier you choose than the handset, and that's very much regional. i'd recommend talking to local friends and coworkers to see what service they have and how satisfied they are with it.

You might also want to check any deals with the carrier you choose.

I love the Iphone, a customer had one on him and let me play with the UI for about 20 minutes.
My issues is that practically all my firends and family use Verizons and Iphones are AT&T only.

Ah well, maybe I can get a unlocked one.

eh, i stole my daughter's razor, razr... oh whatever... and like it.  i do not need a ton of extras, i'm happy with texting, some music, and being able to make and receive calls.  It is small enough to fit into any of my purses, but not so small i feel like i am using a toy phone.  Geek though i am, sad to say i am not much of a techie.  ~sniff~  just don't tell on me faery, they might revoke my geeks guild membership card!

I recently bought a new phone, it's an LG....I don't like it...the buttons are not seperate so it's easy to missdial and you have to have your face very close to the phone for people to hear you.  I also however have to have an extended battery as the amount of time I spend on the phone correlates directly to how much I get paid and having a cell phone increases that amount substantially, so my choices were limited.  I wouldn't recommend it personally.
