Nope, I have no more expectations of us as a group than I do about people in any other area of my life. Having a common interest does not make us a group or a community by any stretch of the imagination, that would indeed be setting too high of an expectation on things.

And that, is precisely what happens to so many who come here expecting to find certain things to be a certain way because of expectations and unrealistic ways of thinking.

Collarme and places like that are simply destinations for like minded individuals to comfortably be able to chat with others who have similar interests.

Define "all in this together" and "makes us all one"?

What specifically got me thinking about this was the" politics and bdsm: thread. It seems odd to me that because of wiitwd, we would be thought to share any general ideas on politics, religion or anything. When you considerer the wide range of....kink, for lack of a better word, to think of us as one big community, strike me as.......silly. And.... I was bored..:)

Jeff

OK, now that I have a better understanding of what you're asking Mr. Jeff (hubba hubba sexy)

To answer your original question, no, I don't believe we're all one when it comes to our views on politics, religion, and other stuff. Yes, some may share similar views, but really, I view us (us being the bdsm community) as any other large group of people....
We are unique individuals and with that we have our own opinions and beliefs.

So, you're bored huh? I can think of a few things to spice up your day *wink wink* does him have his camera handy? hee hee

we share an interest, but i don't think it's an "us vs them" thing.  we all have things in our lives that would make "us" a member of "them" in other aspects anyway.  why even put it in those terms?  we recognize our individuality but celebrate it in different ways, that's about all we really have.  our common interest, wiitwd, is a catagory, the actual practices are different for each individual.

What chafes on me is not the admission that I am kinky. It's the expectation that I have to accept things I find to be personally offensive. I don't expect everyone else to like things I do.

But I am not seeking validation in a herd mentality either.

In regards to a number of recent threads, I am wondering , how many people here actually believe we are all in this together? Does anyone believe that wiitwd, makes us all one.

You are kidding, right?  WIITWD is a catch all phrase precisely because no one could agree on D/s, BDSM, 'lifestyle', S&M, or anything else.

Not really. I think we are people with a common interest. It would be nice if we were more of community simply because I think that is what will get us the social advances we are looking for (not having to worry about being outed or having an interest in BDSM used against you in custody battles) but I don't see it happening anytime soon.

Social advances for the kinky people?  I'm a middle aged, middle class white man who likes having my way at home and having my woman take care of me and do what I tell her to do in all matters including sexual.  I have never worried about being outed and no one has ever threated to hold my kinkiness over my head.  I have never been denied a job or promotion or been told I couldn't rent an apartment because I like being waited on hand and foot by my woman. And what we do sexually is private.  Sorry but I dont think there's a need for a social revolution to demand equal rights for kinky people everywhere. There are far greater social ills that need to be dealt with.

People have lost custody battles because of an interest in BDSM, people have lost jobs because of an interest in BDSM. It may not be the biggest issue (I'd personally say gay marriage is) but it's not fair to have to worry about losing your children because of what you do in the bedroom.
