Well, there's an old saying:

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Now, you won't have to journey a proverbial thousand miles to accomplish your goal.  However, for a while, it'll seem like your goal is very far off.  And making changes to your dieting/excercise is always extremely hard.  You're one step ahead, though.  You've decided to get started and I'd suggest not looking back until you've made some nice progress.

You've accomplished the hardest part already, in my opinion.  Just stick to your plan. We'll be rooting for you.

There's plenty of ways to drop a few fast pounds but they come back right away!  Too discouraging, IMO.

Huzzah for your decision---I am sure you will do well!

Aileen1968 -> RE: I need a good kick (2/1/2008 7:50:28 AM)

Go through your cabinets and throw out all refined sugar products, processed carbs and junk food.  Buy fruits and veggies...cut up a large fruit salad and cut up the veggies into bite size pieces.  When you're hungry snack on them.  The easier you make it to grab a carrot instead of a bagel then you're halfway there.  And if there are no bad food choices in the house then that's even better.  Cook your own food...no more easy ready made meals.  Drink a ton of water.  No sodas at all.  Diet sodas are worse for you than regular.  Hang a happy picture of you somewhere highly visible to remind yourself of what your goal is.

Find joy in your memories of your mother.  My mom died thirteen years ago tomorrow so I know how you're feeling.  I find it easier to cope when I can smile while thinking of her rather than cry.  Good luck.

MissMorrigan -> RE: I need a good kick (2/1/2008 8:15:03 AM)

Aileen offers very wise words. Unnatural sugars are evil, they keep your BS high and you experience the 'drop' when it isn't kept topped up. So cut out the unnatural sugars and you'll go through approx. 3 days of withdrawals which may include some mild shaking. I also limit processed carbs and seriously, no junk food as it's usually stuffed full of syrups/additives that are designed to keep the BS high so that you'll crave more and more of them. I start my day with porridge, no sugar added to it unless it's natural ie fresh fruit chopped up, mid morning have a small snack, for lunch I'd have a pitta bread stuffed with salad/lean chicken or tuna (dressing of a little olive oil/lemon juice and plenty of herbs), mid afternoon snack (no more than 100 cals) and a filling dinner of fresh fish or turkey, vegetables and it means if you do have a sweet tooth, you can have a dessert too... I tend NOT to deny myself anything if I really want it, anything in moderation. The key is, expenditure must be higher than intake to lose weight... so Exercise, exercise and more exercise.

It's damn hard, but once you have established a routine it becomes so much easier, and the more you do, the more effort you'll want to make.

Drink lots of water, it flushes you out, makes you actually FEEL well and please do avoid those wretched fizzy drinks (I used to be hooked on them and they never quench a thirst anyway).

Termyn8or -> RE: I need a good kick (2/1/2008 8:25:43 AM)

Go on something like Atkin's, not exactly but something like it. And do that after at least a three day fast.

But the most important thing is not the diet, it's your habits. No more chips, pretzels, all that. Salad and meat, veggies but not potatoes. No pasta for a month.

A wide variety of veggies, the most colorful and flavorful you can find, organically grown if possible. Cut out everything hydrogenated or preprocessed. Cook for yourself. Use butter, bacon, all the good things, JUST LESS OF IT.

No more snacks, you are a human being, not a mouth attached to a body. That is a habit that must be broken your your body can learn to manage blood sugar more effectively, which goes a long way in quelling hunger.

I have to get off to work, so welcome to one of my shorter posts !

But I have to say, it worked for me. I used to be a pudgy boy, not anymore, and it is staying off. I got a belly, but if I ate how I ate years ago I wouldn't fit through the door.

MissMorrigan -> RE: I need a good kick (2/1/2008 8:38:17 AM)

Ja, bad eating habits are the worse. I had plenty of them, they're much fewer these days and I refuse to eat after 7pm (unless it' sa special treat and I'm dining out with others) as I want to digest it properly/expend a little energy prior to going to bed. Stopping the snacks is essential, I used to not eat a proper dinner, but was constantly grazing like a prized heifer (some still refer to me as a 'silly cow' but I'll have the last laugh, oh yes I wil haha).

The tendency with low-cal stuff is that it doesn't necessary mean 'low-sugar', and vice versa. Also, people tend to use more diet margarines, etc... I'd rather stick with purer items but less of them.

My arse is still considered a wide load, however, I no longer have that very rounded stomach that's associated with bloat caused by all those carbs. The more walking/exercise a person does in conjunction with eating sensibly  the better the digestive system becomes... so no more nasty constipation!

Every three days I make a huge batch of salad and keep it in the fridge to add to every meal. Even though I'm a large lady, some months ago I had my glucose and cholesterol levels tested and the doctor was very impressed, so much so he thinks me a medical marvel given that no one my size should have such low glucose/cholesterol levels... it's due to me eating avocados and olives with my salads.

i'd recommend boxing to get all the feelings out. Great aggressive workout! Boxing for fitness if boxing as a sport doesn't appeal to you. You learn all the same movements, workout like a fighter, but no 1 on 1 fighting w/a person, just the bags.

DomMeinCT -> RE: I need a good kick (2/1/2008 8:42:00 AM)

Adopt a homeless dog and commit to walking it every day.  You and the dog benefit.  [;)]

My "girls" are one of the chief motivators for me to walk and get outside.

LadyHathor -> RE: I need a good kick (2/1/2008 9:13:58 AM)

Wow this is all great advice, keep it coming puhleez--

axctually we do have a dog, and she can use the weight loss too---so we are out and about--I just cleaned off the small tramp to put in My bedroom that way when the water is running for the tub, or Im watching letterman, I can go some nice b bounces--I started this great online food diet watch thing that they offer through work and I am going to get a nutrition coach, that's free from work too---

My problem isnt the sweets or junk food, Im not into that, but it IS not enough fruits and vegs and too much comfort food too late at night ( pastas and pastas and pastas, lol)---that was a huge wake up when I read that from MissMorrigan, we eat like at 8, then get very sedentary in the evening, so back to dinner between 6:30 and 7 and finger veggies and fruits if we need a late night snack---

Thanks termyn8tor, however, I have high cholesterol and high BP so I have to watch the fats----so Im back to the good fats versus the bad fats---

and ok, wine and gin is My undoing,---that went down the drain this morning---so there is My embarassment sharing for the day.[:o]

lusciouslips19 -> RE: I need a good kick (2/1/2008 9:21:25 AM)

My best diet trick are number one, go off all sugar and breads and pastas for 2 weeks. Atkins and south beach would call this induction phase of a diet. It is really hard, but when you rid yourselves of the sugar addiction and go through the withdrawals to the other side, what is left is a much smaller appetite with only real hunger and not sugar cravings. Also, stop eating by 6 pm. If you are awake and moving later, you can push this back.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: I need a good kick (2/1/2008 10:39:02 AM)

Atkins and all that are well and good, but depriving yourself of a food group is never wise.  Variety is important, and lots of lean protein helps.

I envy all of you who can digest raw fruit and veg!

Feric -> RE: I need a good kick (2/1/2008 12:39:26 PM)

My condolences on your loss.

Grief is never easy to deal with, but it can be done. I would advise you to read the book, "When Bad Things Happen to Good People", by Harold Kushner. Very good stuff.

To take off the pounds, you need a clean break. Losing weight is actually easy: eliminate your fat intake and increase your physical output. Restrict yourself to fruts and vegetables; salads are good, and if you need a little protein that can be gotten with tuna (packed in water, not oil). Snacks should consist of carrots or oranges. Exercise your whole body--swimming is best, as it uses all your muscles. As your body responds to the demands you put on it; with no incoming fats or sugars for it to consume it will turn to those stored in the body. Maintain your momentum, and you'll be surprised how fast the weight will come off.

Politesub53 -> RE: I need a good kick (2/1/2008 2:00:26 PM)

Losing weight too quickly is thought to be counter productive. If you lose weight too quickly the body compensates by trying to burn off muscle. When you eat normally the weight just piles on again. Drink water, eat smaller portions than now, and exercise, even if its going for brisk walks. Theres nothing wrong with switching to healthier diet, good fats vs bad fats ect. The body needs salt and sugar though, so make sure you get enough intake with the foods you do switch to.

As for losing weight quickly, which is best..... Losing 2lb a week and it staying off, or losing 5lb a week and it coming back ?

Cinammon. It boosts sugar metabolism, and will lower cholesterol levels.

I would like to suggest NOT focusing on pounds, as you have added excercise.  Instead, use a tape measure to measure your waist, neck, wrists, bi-ceps, calves, and thighs.  And your under chest part (where the bra strap goes).

Record these numbers.

Then every week, take the measurements again and record them.

This will give you a visual of where you are loosing weight, and help with altering how you see yourself in the mirror.

It is a much better indicator than stepping on a scale.

Good luck!  And stay in touch with MoGa, cause I am sure that she will be rooting for you!

popeye1250 -> RE: I need a good kick (2/1/2008 2:25:24 PM)

Do what I do, take a brisk walk everyday for 45 minutes to an hour.
Then weigh yourself after 30 days and you'll see that you've lost 4-6 pounds!

CuriousLord -> RE: I need a good kick (2/1/2008 3:03:24 PM)

If you were a sub, I'd just recommend you have your Dom put you on a diet.  But, since this isn't the case, you'll just have to have the maturity to do it with yourself.

Don't rely on a gimmick.  There may be one out there that actually works, but that isn't the way you need to do this.  Diet and excerise with keeping nutrition in mind.  No gimmicks, no short cuts.. just do it.

Anything else is accepting defeat.

christine1 -> RE: I need a good kick (2/1/2008 3:12:54 PM)

exercise and cutting down portion sizes will help.  i've never thought that depriving ones self of anything did much good but make them want it more and eventually eat more of it.  you can eat anything you want, just watch your portions. but if you really want to make a difference in how you feel, eat from the healthiest foods you can.  i love this site and try to keep all of my foods from this list and i feel great.  hope the link works, i haven't quite figured out doing links yet.  if it doesn't work, go to www.whfoods.org

WHFoods: The World's Healthiest Foods  good luck to you!

windchymes -> RE: I need a good kick (2/1/2008 3:23:45 PM)

If you weigh yourself and find that you've "only" lost 1/2 a pound.....go to the fridge and take out two sticks of butter or margarine, set them on the counter, look at them and think, "Wow, I just lost two sticks of butter!" [:)]  Seeing it gives you a much bigger sense of accomplishment than thinking "1/2 a pound".   Good luck!

(My mom died almost 3 years ago, too.)
