Beware if you go to Waterloo Park or Eaton park in England. Talking CCTV cameras have been installed and when someone watching the monitors witnesses "anti-social behavior" a voice will come over the loudspeaker saying to knock it off.

Thing is with the English, Cyberdude, the public domain isn't the be all and end all for us, so we're indifferent to what goes on there. But, I have heard that some of your crowd like to swear allegiance to a piece of cloth and a song. 'Could be wrong, though.

Or as Umberto Eco might put it, "why are they laughing in those cages?"

OedipusRexIt -> RE: Have you Brits never read 1984? (1/31/2008 2:49:27 PM)

Tres bien...  Umberto does provide many an insightful turn of phrase , and that one is appproriate.

While we have cameras albeit not as prevasive as in  UK, it isnt commen for  voices to talk to the subject. US law treats video and audio differently. Depending on the state- a separate set of parameters apply to audio vs video.

I hate to break it to you cyberdude, but we are on camera all the time in the States.  Yeah, we have loudspeakers attached to them too.  Instead of a police official, it's usually someone yelling at you to pay before you pump.  So I don't exactly see what the difference is or figure out which is more annoying.  Cameras are just part of life.  It's well established, that we don't have a right to privacy in public.  You are on camera all the time, in big and small cities across America.

RCdc -> RE: Have you Brits never read 1984? (1/31/2008 2:58:06 PM)

I believe I read somewhere that the UK have 25% of the CCTV coverage in the world (allegedly)
So when someone goes missing, gets attacked or murdered - the police can tell us where they have been, who they were with and what they were doing just before they go missing, get attacked or are murdered.

Cool hey.

Cyberdude, much better having a camera shout at you then getting tasered eh ?

Vampyrefledgling -> RE: Have you Brits never read 1984? (1/31/2008 3:49:37 PM)

CCTV is completely different in the UK than any sort of security camera in the States. The Brits can track you from the moment you step out of your flat until you come back again. They can almost follow you during your daily routine depending on where you live (in the city, country, etc). Americans are very concerned about privacy in the public domain, yet our government listens in on personal phone conversations whenever they please. I would rather be viewed in public at all times via camera then have to give up my privacy.

Due respect, NorthernGent, some Americans swear loyalty to a piece of paper and a flag? Really, seems as simplistic as saying the Brits swear fealty to a crown. It's not that simple and while some of us are not the brightest crayons in the box, others are loyal to the ideals that flag symbolizes and know more about that piece of paper than you might think.

~Fledgling

As for Orwell and his book

Actually, British citizens are not conditioned to swear allegiance to the crown and sceptre.

Aneirin -> RE: Have you Brits never read 1984? (1/31/2008 3:54:15 PM)

Hey, a good thing about all our cameras is I can log onto a BBC camera which is a few hundred feet above me on our local big hill and see what the weather is doing.

Not lazy, but the camera shows Dartmoor and if there are heavy clouds over Dartmoor, then I know to wear a coat when I go out.

bipolarber -> RE: Have you Brits never read 1984? (1/31/2008 5:58:18 PM)

The camera surveillance is a minor thing. (Unless you are planning on naked sex in the parks.. which might effect some gay trysting in the summer.) But the real threat to our freedoms is in our Constitutional rights being eroded.

Think about it guys... we're now being wiretapped by our own government, they're doing their damnest to be able to kidnap us off the street and torture us because they suspect we might be involved in terrorisim. The daily news is being rewritten again and again, to protect the powers that be. The War goes on, just to allow them to keep the powers that they have grabbed for themselves.

The Brits are doing fine. They're still half awake. It's the U.S. that is still out, like it just downed a bottle of sleeping pills.

Zzzzzzzzzz.....

Stairway to Freebird!!! *makes horns*

RCdc -> RE: Have you Brits never read 1984? (2/1/2008 2:01:56 AM)

This is Darcy

A few facts.

There are four million CCTV cameras in the UK, roughly one for every 14 citizens.

If you live in a city, say London, you are captured on camera some 300 times a day.

The Home Office regularly spends up to three-quarters of its crime prevention budget on cameras.

Up to 90% of these four million cameras are operating illegally , by breaching the Information Commissioner's code of practice, which effectively renders them useless as evidence in the event of a court case.

The use of cameras to track people in the street is banned in Canada and Germany.

As you were.
