As it appeared right after my post, let's assume it was. [X(]

The "In reply to" thingie proves it was, btw.

RCdc -> RE: News in the Off Topic Section (1/30/2008 5:42:41 PM)

I enjoy the news posts.  I don't always want to discuss something, but we don't always get the same news across the pond that occurs in the states or elsewhere - so it's good to get another stack of news.  It is enjoyable to go visit a link that catches my eye and have a read whilst drinking coffee and taking a break from sketching.  I'm sure if the mods found it inappropriate, they would have stopped it by now.  Until they do, I see it as simply a positive influence.

I agree. No complaints whatsoever with Levels's posts.

My thanks, ladies.

TheHeretic -> RE: News in the Off Topic Section (1/30/2008 6:15:10 PM)

This is one of those, 'sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't,' subjects, Stephann.  It has a lot to do with who posted it to begin with.

I enjoy Level's 'And now, the news' threads.  He finds interesting stuff, puts several items together, and it's usually an informative read, even if it doesn't create a lot of discussion.  Sometimes a little 'time out' from the more charged conversations is just the thing.

Knowing the general attitude and position of the person who put it up can tell you a lot also.  Owner59, just as an example, may post a title, a single line and a link, and an experienced forum person will know it's a Democrat bash, or porn, from what you see on the home page for the forum.  I do the same thing sometimes, and I guess others would know it will have either a conservative or strange slant to it.

Quoting is good, but how much?  The best stuff is often buried deep in the article, and do you make people less likely to go read the whole thing if you post the first three paragraphs?  TOS of the site linked should be considered as well.  I'll sometimes link to Michael Yon's blog from Iraq and he requests that quotes be limited to 75 words.

There is also connection speed for the participants to consider.  Now that I have something reasonable, I'm much more likely to follow links, but when I was on dial-up it was a lot less frequent, and I skipped the video's completely.

Stephann -> RE: News in the Off Topic Section (1/30/2008 6:18:37 PM)

Hi Rich,

No, I agree.  I was just flipping back seven or eight pages of the OT forum, and saw a lot of news posts with only one, two, and sometimes no replies.

My other suggestion would be to make a 'current events' section in Casual Banter, so that the off topic "how do I fix the Blue Screen of Death" questions can be sorted from the "Bush is a Nazi" threads.

Just my 2 cents, which clearly aren't worth much considering how inflation is about to hit...hard [;)]

Level -> RE: News in the Off Topic Section (1/30/2008 6:22:27 PM)

Thanks, Rich. You bring up a good point about "how much" to quote. I limit it, as I think CM doesn't want entire articles posted here; I generally just go with the first 3 or 4 paragraphs, as that's often enough to let someone know if they do want to look further, but sometimes I'll find something incendiary enough to warrant pulling it out of the written order [:D]

TheHeretic -> RE: News in the Off Topic Section (1/30/2008 6:28:41 PM)

Oh yes.  The threads that just wither and die.  Even worse than the mods tossing your brilliant thoughts into Random Stupidity...  Not everything can be a twenty page 'why are subs fat' keyboard-wrecker.

We run it up the flagpole, sometimes people salute, sometimes they give it a 20% salute.

MzMia -> RE: News in the Off Topic Section (1/30/2008 7:58:55 PM)

I RARELY read threads with only just a link, I am not compelled
to click on it, so it doesn't bother me.

But then, I am a very selective reader on here.

I do wonder though, why the poster can't type one line or two, along
with the link.
