Stephann -> News in the Off Topic Section (1/30/2008 11:49:33 AM)

Hi folks,

So, I love off topic discussions about the news, politics, and the like.  But a trend that's been growing over the past several months seems to be the posting of news stories with a link.  No opinions, no thoughts, no "I thought this was important to share with you because...."  Just a link.

Now if I'm looking for headlines, I usually scoot over to the BBC world news (since CNN tanked) and occasionally Reuters.  I get most of my news from NPR, as I regularly listen to Morning Edition on KCRW (kcrw.org.)

Pretty please, if you want to discuss a topic, say something.  A thread about news, with no opinion, to me, is a bit like grunting at the sun; I'm not shocked that there's a sun rising, but I might be shocked if you said "gee, the sun is rising at 1:30 am."  Without the context that you wish to discuss a thread, why bother starting it?

Take care,

Stephan

Just consider it an op/ed piece without an op/ed.

RealityLicks -> RE: News in the Off Topic Section (1/30/2008 12:24:19 PM)

Maybe it's their kink to chuck something out there and have it discussed?

GreedyTop -> RE: News in the Off Topic Section (1/30/2008 12:25:27 PM)

In the case of the Godiva link, I figured the title said it all LOL

SeeksOnlyOne -> RE: News in the Off Topic Section (1/30/2008 12:34:15 PM)

i have read articles that were posted here and found them interesting.  many, i would have not known about except for someone taking the time to post it here.  i enjoy the sharing.

discussions are so seldom discussions, merely ways for chest thumping and i can paste more links to back up what i think than you can.

sometimes i just enjoy having news shared with me, or sharing it with others.  just to read it, be aware of it, no discussion required.  so i hope those that normally share news in this section will keep on doing so, no discussion required.

if its conversation worthy, one  eventually breaks out anyhow.

Perhaps those OPs are giving you credit for being perceptive?

And quite right, too, although yesterday's link which led to a word document marked only with the words "Just a Link", was crossing the line.

I couldn't agree more.

GoddessDustyGold -> RE: News in the Off Topic Section (1/30/2008 2:16:41 PM)

I agree with the OP also.  It is fine and dandy to post a link.  But I think it is also a nice gesture for the OP to write a little something concerning the article and which way they are leaning to get a discussion going.
Frankly, if all I see is a link, and a line saying something like "doesn't this just frost your ass?" or some other inane comment, I will seldom even click on the link to read what is frosting his/her ass.

popeye1250 -> RE: News in the Off Topic Section (1/30/2008 2:22:29 PM)

Stephann, I agree.
If someone wants to have a discussion it would be nice if they'd start it off.

Thank you. I've debated for awhile whether or not to mention it because it bugs me lol. So... thankies.OH OH OH dang that pic is nice. (insert word of choice for nice: hot, steamy, wow etc) [:D]

OedipusRexIt -> RE: News in the Off Topic Section (1/30/2008 3:13:11 PM)

I'll pile on with the "me too".

I really enjoy a good healthy discussion of current events, and am willing to trade thoughts and opinions with those unlikely to agree with me, in the hope of learning something.

Just can't get that here, without all the "news" interfering.  News isn't thought.  WTG , OP.

No more news!!!

Level -> RE: News in the Off Topic Section (1/30/2008 3:18:22 PM)

I like posting a paragraph or two, and a link.

The haphazard posting's gotten me a little irked, too.  It seems like even just quoting more than a line or two from the story's going out of style.

GreedyTop -> RE: News in the Off Topic Section (1/30/2008 3:45:00 PM)

*hangs head*

I promise to do better...

Stephann -> RE: News in the Off Topic Section (1/30/2008 4:10:49 PM)

Frankly, Level, you're one of the fellows I'm aiming this at.  I'm not trying to be insulting; it's more of a pretty please.  pahunkboy's posts as well.  Not that I'm trying to be the thought police here or anything; it's just if I don't see a thought or two about the topic, I rarely feel compelled to respond to the topic.

NaiveTempest -> RE: News in the Off Topic Section (1/30/2008 4:12:41 PM)

So true. Where is my motivation to click on the link without a little write up or quote? It's like someone sending me a message "contact me" with their messenger name. Why the hell would I want to do that?

While not a "kink", per se, this is reasonably close to why I post the news items the way I do. I see something that catches my eye, or that I think others here will find interesting, and I toss it out, see what happens. Someone will often respond with a comment that I find thought-provoking. I may respond then, I may not.... I'm not an overly "yakky" person.

I am, however, great fun at parties.
