Why?

I mean, surely making them look cuter isn't going to make any submissive more interested in them- and plain old handcuffs are just as suitable for the dabbling, jokey or hen-nighty crowd.

Do marketers think that handcuffs looking normal are going to scare people off?

Fluffy cuffs are for those who are into the 'naughty' without the true 'badness'. Some people like to use some coy props to spice themselves up, if they don't dig steel, leather, and whips then who are we to say "FLUFF IS BAD!" ?

Fur lining on a proper pair of cuffs is to prevent the metal from chafing at the wrist and make them more comfortable to wear, as well as possibly more attractive - depending on the people involved. The cheap five buck numbers you see in stores are to serve the same purpose though I would strongly advise against anyone using them.

Plain or decorated does matter. Ever seen a group of owners drool over a particularly beautiful flogger? The pretty leather doesn't do any better of a job than plain black.

I am guessing the OP is talking about the cheap cuffs that you can get from thrift stores and anne summers in the UK, not the more expensive fur lined cuffs.

They aren't meant to be anything but fun - suck it up and let people have their fun and you have yours.  If you think that all cuffs come in one version and everyone would like them, they don't.
Personally, I like the ones covered in swarovski crystals or those yummy original jailer kinds, rather than police issue types.

I don't mean to sound condemning- I was genuinely curious as to whether they acually had a real purpose within BDSM.

I agree with the decoration remark- it always struck me as an odd way to decorate handcuffs though. Black padding seems to fit the scene or the dynamic they're intended for. Pink fluff only ever made me think they would be used as a joke.

That was my guess. I just figure those cuffs are trying to be knock-off versions of the nicer ones.

Pink can be fun. It just depends on how "seriously" you take your toys. We've got a set of bright pink leads from the tackshop and I'm hoping to get lengths of rainbow colored rope. For awhile I had my eye on a baby blue crop but they sold out.

I prefer fur cuffs because the regular metal can easily cut off circulation, the fur gives a bit of a padding from the bite of the metal into the flesh, and ususally a scene last longer because I'm not whimpering in pain. Besides my nickname is kitten, it only seems plausable that my cuffs are furry, and have a lepord print. As for the cheaper Valentines day cuffs, some can not afford expensive items right away, they get the cheaper version to enjoy play, while saving up for the real ones. I had a hand made flogger thats a varity of very neon colored ribbon and pony beads. It served its purpose, and worked just as well. I just didnt have the funds to go out and buy a real one at the time. Even now I miss it, because it had a bit more of a bite then the leather did.

Presumably the pink fluff is intended to make the handcuffs seem more whimsical, and less threatening. I'm sure they're great for people who want to play naughty, sexy games in the bedroom, as opposed to stark and cruel ones down in the dungeon. I certainly wouldn't condemn either option, though I myself prefer the latter. I'd rather be fettered in cold, unadorned steel.

Some very sensble answers there.

I hadn' considered the financial aspect- and the more cute submissive dynamic makes sense.

Careful with the cheap cuffs. While I understand not having money for the nice toys right away, I've heard some horror stories about the cheap cuffs breaking during use and cutting people and the lock breaking and the cuffs tightening too much on the wrist and leaving scars.

He has me wear leather fur trimmed cuffs. It is not only because they are more attractive, but they serve the type of bondage he likes to do... he can chain me to almost anything, yet I am mobile at the same time. They are very functional and comfortable.

I do not know if you realize how painful real handcuffs can be, but they can actually hurt a person. The metal can dig into the skin and even the tender ligaments, tendons, and bone. I have tried on real police cuffs to see what they felt like ( my brother in law is a peace officer and my sister wanted to show me how much they hurt, and they are not comfortable). While I think real cuffs have their place in play, and they are not inherently "bad", give me leather cuffs any day of the week. Much better than rope too.

Not real fond of furry anythings here, they itch if I sweat any (and boy, don't I hope to sweat!)  and the fur sheds.  I'd personally prefer plain ol' leather and steel and chains and rope and and and....lol.  Not knocking those that like fuzzy, may be a softer entry into wiitwd for some.

No, not really. They are not the cuffs that someone who is actually involved in BDSM would be drawn to. They are more a vanila kink thing, a softer way to introduce a little spice into a relationship. They tend to either be plastic, or quick-release, so they are useless for "real" bondage anyway. Every valentines day, you see them crop up everywhere.  The only use I have had for them ever was as a gag bridal shower gift. Its a running gag in my circle of friends, since most of them know I am into BDSM they expect the cuffs to show up at every bridal shower.

DV

--edited to add-- I think the OP is talking about the fake cuffs that nivade everywhere around Valentines day, and not the high end leather ined, or even metal lined ones. Fur lined real cuffs have their place, the gag ones do not.

My favourite pair of leather cuffs are lined with a nice electric blue fur.  I've had them for 8 years and they serve me well.  They may have blue fur, but they're heavy and sturdy.

I'm not limited by 'the scene'.  My play is fun, and some of my accessories reflect that.

I want a pair of them. Metal handcuffs can cause permanent nerve damage. My wrists tend to go numb very quickly, I think there's a nerve nearer to the surface than it ought to be, because rope loose enough for me to slide my hands out of has still caused them to go numb. I think the extra thick padding of the furry ones would protect them. Besides you can get them in pink and I like pink.

Adding: I don't consider what we do to be naughty or bad. I have no feelings of ill ease concerning my sexuality. And I've always thought that those who need to describe themselves in this way are conflicted.

I wonder if it's the depth of the restraint that is causing your problems and compressing a nerve? Maybe a broader restraint like a broad leather cuff rather than a relatively slim restraint like a handcuff might be more comfy for you?  I can't be held in slim metal cuffs because of a similar problem, but get on just fine in leather cuffs and straps.

Y'know, with all the role play/fantasy in the scene, I could easily envision a bottom choosing a Barbie scene--and if that doesn't demand the signature Barbie color of shocking pink, I don't know what does. (After all, Mattel modeled Barbie after a sex toy from the Reerperbahn (sp?)--which my mother, unbeknownst, identified at a glance when I got my (only ever) 1962 Barbie...she let me have one, but commented repeatedly that "Barbie looks to me like a 25-year-old tart.")

Rainbow plastic, black leather, purple glitter, fuzzy barbarian, crimson corsetry...heck, I love quality Anglo-Saxon tunics, or (better still) Norman bliault et corsage. All the things that can go on under a long flowing skirt?

Raperbahn... rope street.. Hamburg... interesting place.  But, Travemunde can be even more interesting when the Danish tourists come over on the ferry.

For non marking.. vet wrap on the skin under the cuffs.
And, according the the DOD manual on physical restraints, you should be able to insert a fingertip under the cuffs to assure they do not restrict circulation.

I've never seen fuzzy cuffs I would trust not to break by the third time they are used.  I just use my old military issue ones.

Stefan
