I've always wanted to mount paintguns on my car and my bike, with different color paints for different misbehaviors...

I think it was George Carlin who proposed we should arm every driver with a set of suction darts.  If you see someone doing something stupid on the road, you shoot a dart at their car, which sticks to it.  Once someone has accumulated 3 darts, they're pulled over and automatically given a ticket. Great.. a note from someone who endangers the road with his joy riding to someone who endangers the road with his lack of attention.  It's good to know that the pot can still call the kettle black.

How is my riding to and from work in rush hour traffic considered "joy riding" or even "endangering" the road?

I don't advocate lane splitting, I don't advocate riding on the shoulder...I didn't intend for this thread to become a "pipe" issue, that's been beat like a horse many times before.

What I do advocate is everyone being aware of thier surroundings while driving or riding, being defensive and looking out for the other guy. Stop to think, while the person who is not paying attention and cuts lanes or whatever to save them a minute and gain a few hundred feet, they get to go home to thier family. The guy they caused to wreck, doesn't...ever.

There is good and bad on both sides, this isn't a us or them thread, I just want to get home in one piece like everyone else does, is that asking too much?

I agree.  It's odd how when we get on the road, we tend to forget there are humans in other vehicles, whatever kind of vehicle it may be.

"Loud pipes save lives" is a well known quote for a good reason. It's true.

Screamingly loud pipes are just obnoxious and remind me of reeaally big trucks and all those 4x4 suvs that hog the road and make any accidedent a death-trap. Add to that these same drivers who talk on the phone, and multi-task, etc, and drive when they are super tired (same as being drugged).

One guy was so polite the other day he slowed way down in a quick way to pull over into my lane, no warning, no blinker, so he could handle his important phone call... Glad I wasn't on a bike, or he would have creamed me.

[:'(]

I'm sure it is true. It leads to a circle of vicious reasoning: loud pipes save lives so that biker may bike another day and inflict his loud pipes on me yet again.

Nothing against bikers in general...just the two tools that live on either side of me. When those guys come home downshifting like mad at midnight, I feel like I'm trying to sleep on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier.

I was actually commenting about the author.  The OP marked it as "author unknown", so I took it to mean that you didn't write it.

There's quite a difference between someone who rides to and from work and someone who bases his life off transportation, riding around the highway for kicks and giggles.

My bad...lol

It's all good.

In the days when I was married, my husband and I would ride around on his motorcycle.  I really enjoyed it.  But the most important lesson we learned was to drive as though you're invisible.  Whether or not drivers are cell phoning or anything else, they just don't see you.

Lane splitting is legal here, as long as it's at the speed limit or, if traffic has slowed, no more than 5mph over the flow of traffic.

There has been debate after debate over wehther or not the ridiculously loudness of altered bikes save lives.  There was a discussion on that topic here last summer, I think, and many riders voiced their opposition to that claim.  I think if the argument held water, insurance rates would go down for loud bikes, and manufacturers wouldn't make them so quiet.  What saves lives is knowing you're in an incredible vulnerable position and riding accordingly.

As for distracted drivers, we live in a "hurry-up-and-go" society.  We (generically speaking) have become so good at multitasking that when we're not, we feel like we should be doing more.  It's no wonder people can't relax anymore.   I'd be interested to see if accident rates have increased, decreased, or stayed the same in the last 5 years.

Well said, Owned.

The issue I have with the whole loud pipes save lives thing is that... with loud pipes, unless you are too close to the rear of the car, they wont hear ya (doppler effect, anyone?).
Next to it? meh, maybe, depends on how distracted the driver is (or how loud the stereo is playing).

Ahead of the car? Yeah. those loud pipes are LOUD.. but you're past the car.. sooooooooooooooooooooooo
