when living with my grandmother and uncle the back of a Yamaha FZ1 was my most common source of transportation. Vegas traffic is [:@] to begin with with allt he tourists on top of the locals. now on the highway the crotch rocket wasn't too loud but damn if we weren't fast, my uncle having already been in one accident years ago and knowing my mother would have come back fromt he dead to kick his ass should anything happen when i was with him. Let's be real if you take away the obnouxious street bike and cycle riders in general most car drivers would be more respectful of bikers. I saw most because there are some who just don't care. Case in point one day we had the ass in frotn of uss toss a cup out of his window and it still had soda/water in it. we'd been behind this bastard since the on ramp it wans't like he didn't know, nice little swerve to avoid getting hit. Now that I spend most of my time in a car I still see thing from the biker's point of view and agree that everyone needs to put the damn <insert object> here down and DRIVE

Of course in Vegas the traffic is so dense and the cops on the strip are usually on bicycles so it is pretty difficult for them to catch you. thompson

Yeah most of the strip cops are on bikes, but there is plenty of back up on 2 or 4 motorized wheels. plus also depends on whats going on. Big draw weekend? chances are they'll toss you for the drunks throwing blows on freemont street with a crowd watching or the Naked chick doing her cruifixtion pole trick

I don't multitask while driving but I could easily shoot motorcyclists who drive between lanes, because they don't think the driving laws apply to them. Having a cyclist appear between two lanes of cars and cut you off is not something I enjoy. Oh and the one who did this and drove into my car? Even his passenger refused to give a statement on his behalf when he decided to sue me.

I once saw real multitasking…. A driver decided to beat the hell out of a biker while waiting in a traffic jam. It seems the biker did not like the passenger opening his door to stop the biker from driving between lanes. The biker’s mistake was taking offence when the driver was huge. Butch

Butch Butch: The simple solution to inconsiderate people opening doors into you is to simply release the bike and let it find its way into the front seat via the open door. Call the cops and the paramedics and express ones "concern" for the occupants of the cage.[:D] Yes it has happened to me twice. Both times the driver of the cage went to jail for "vehicular assault" and his insurance company paid for repairs to my ride and my body bag. Of course this did not happen at 60mph but rather at about 20mph. thompson

And here in NY it is illegal for a bike to drive between lanes, any nonpedestrian including bicycles, motorcycles and horses must obey the same laws that govern automobiles.

FR: I won't even get on a pedal bike to go somewhere these days because of the utter rank stupidity of so many car drivers. Until I'm guaranteed adequate bike lanes, or car-free zones on my commute to work or anywhere else, then I will continue to contribute to green house gas generation.

Screamingly loud pipes are just obnoxious and remind me of reeaally big trucks and all those 4x4 suvs that hog the road and make any accidedent a death-trap. One guy was so polite the other day he slowed way down in a quick way to pull over into my lane, no warning, no blinker, so he could handle his important phone call... I hear that from bikers all the time, and like others here have said....it's an excuse to be obnoxious and take on that bad boy image. Helmets do save lives, and it has been proven time and time again. But yet, look how much bikers bitch about having to wear them. My state did away with our helmet laws about 10 years ago, and I never see bikers wearing helmets now. They gave the same silly excuses that they give for having loud, noise polluting pipes on their bikes (which are technically illegal by the way, and destructive to the environment.) They say they obstruct their view (hmm, kind of like a windshield), they obstruct their hearing (how do you hear anything over those pipes?), they get hot in the summer (well, so do hard hats. But, I assure you they save lives.) The loud pipes are annoying, and they are harmful. Whether you know it or not, noise pollution is extremely destructive. I happen to enjoy having good hearing. I don't enjoy listening to all of you guys having a mid-life crisis, rev your stupid little toys up next to me at a stop light. Before you start talking about loud stereos...I don't have a stereo in my truck. I don't buy trucks with options, and I meant to put one in later. But I never did, and I got used to not having one. It actually bothers me to drive someone else's car and have them turn a stereo on. It breaks my concentration. I also don't talk on my cell phone when I drive. I never do it. I wait until I can pull over to call people back, that's what caller ID and voice mail are for. I won't even buy a car or truck with automatic transmission. I don't like them; I think they make people lazy. So my advice to you about riding a bike is this, wear a helmet and watch out. If you expect to be safe on one, then are you fooling yourself.

i drive i tiny very quiet car (cage) but the multitasking SUV and pickup truck drives don't seem to see me, hear me or care that i almost had to put my car in the ditch just a couple of days ago to avoid the cell-phone-yakking Escalade driver who came into my lane. i guess i should have been wearing a helmet! The original post didn't specify motorcycle-v-automobile, just driver-v-multi-tasker.

Ah, who doesn't use a laptop while driving? Actually, I have a cell hookup modem on my laptop. I'm driving right now, actually. It's pretty easy.. the only hard part is when the lesbian porn videos I have running in the background start to become distracting. It's a good thing bikers have the loud pipes, though. When I'm not paying attention to the road, they really don't subconsciously encourage me to want to hit the obnixous bikers. No, not at all! If anything, I've come to value and respect the attention whores of the road.. with absolutely no homocidal annoyance for their utter lack of disregard for the eardrums of others..

I know what you mean CL I use a Xbox while driving with one of those fake wheels for motor racing type games the only problem is remembering which wheel is the real one sometimes. If the turnings on the racing game I am simultaneously playing while driving coincided with the real ones I'd have no problem. Programmers should really think about this issue I feel.[8\|]

In the days when I was married, my husband and I would ride around on his motorcycle. I really enjoyed it. But the most important lesson we learned was to drive as though you're invisible. Whether or not drivers are cell phoning or anything else, they just don't see you. Lane splitting is legal here, as long as it's at the speed limit or, if traffic has slowed, no more than 5mph over the flow of traffic. There has been debate after debate over wehther or not the ridiculously loudness of altered bikes save lives. There was a discussion on that topic here last summer, I think, and many riders voiced their opposition to that claim. I think if the argument held water, insurance rates would go down for loud bikes, and manufacturers wouldn't make them so quiet. What saves lives is knowing you're in an incredible vulnerable position and riding accordingly. As for distracted drivers, we live in a "hurry-up-and-go" society. We (generically speaking) have become so good at multitasking that when we're not, we feel like we should be doing more. It's no wonder people can't relax anymore. I'd be interested to see if accident rates have increased, decreased, or stayed the same in the last 5 years.
