Am i right that those that don't have at least $3000 of earned income get nothing?  Seems like some of them need it the most, like those on social security or living off meager investments.  We have our own business and didn't take any salary last year, so does that mean we won't get any?  But those who make 150K as a couple will get a check, they certainly don't need it. [:o]

proud,
Correct - at least in its current form. The Senate has to get a hold of it, add a like 'Pork' flavoring, and approve it. Maybe they'll include a taste for the under $3k group as a trade off for building a bridge to nowhere.

Keep in mind, this is an election year. This is putting more money in the pot for the PAC's representing the $50 Billion going to Corporations; while making the incumbents appears like 'Santa Claus' once they get to campaigning back in their home districts. You think the timing of delivery is a coincidence to correspond to the peak campaigning season?

Meanwhile, you may not be getting a check from 'Santa' but you'll sure be getting your statement and pay back schedule, including interest, after November.

It would be appropriate if no incumbent won reelection, but apparently many people's votes can be bought for $600, or less.

Here's what I've been wondering all week:

The 'average' American family with two bread-winners and dependants makes less than 70k, no matter what figures you go by. I've heard that the medium salary for Americans was 30-55k, depending on the figures.

I haven't read anything to date about rebates for the majority of Americans, people in this tax range.

Does that mean most people who actually defaulted on their loans and could use the help, the majority of people who don't yet have a blue-ray dvd player from walmart and would be most likely to go buy one, are going to get nothing?

AIUI if you made enough money that you owed taxes last year, that is had some tax liability no matter how small, and you made less than $75K per adult you get $600 per adult and $300 per child.

Above 75K per adult and yout check goes down by 5% per thousand dollars of income so above 84K you get nada.

If you made at least 3K in taxable income last year but less than what ever is the point at which you had an actual tax liability you get $300 per adult plus $300 per child.

Less than 3K in income you get nada.

My understanding is that the lower limit is 3K earned  income not taxable income, so it  has to come from working  (doesn't include investment income) and it's before any deductions. Is that right?

i'm not going to hold my breath until i have an actual check in my hand...if that does happen, it will go into a CD or towards something for the house or condo i will be buying within the next 6 months or so.

... Some people who pay taxes are going to get part of them back.

was not clear?

I see your confusion. That statement wasn't what I was replying to.

My comment was directed at this statement, supposedly from the MSNBC site.

quote:

— A worker with one child, who earned $9,000 and owed no taxes in 2007: Would qualify for the $300 rebate available to individuals who pay no taxes but earned at least $3,000, plus an additional $300 for the child. A $600 rebate.

"Bread & Circus"

Your check is in the mail - BREAD
Remember to spread spending your slice to as many Corporations as you can. Oil companies, retail stores, banks, entertainment sources; all need you to spend your check with them to help the corporate officers and shareholders.

The focus of our Congress, Rodger Clemens using steroids - CIRCUS
I recall hearing news that the US is still involved in a minor skirmish in the middle east. The borders provide an open door to criminals. The budget deficit has reached record levels. I hear after they resolve this, Congress will next delve deeply into the New England Patriot's 'spy-gate' scandal.

Stay tuned - We'll be electing the next 'fiddler' in November.
