Mercnbeth -> Economic Stimulus Packaged Approved - Your Check is ALMOST in the Mail (1/24/2008 2:15:38 PM)

Next time you hear that there is "bi-partisan" support for a Bill pending in Congress the question that should go through your mind is; "How much are the Corporations getting this time?" Soon, for many, there will be a Corporate Welfare check coming to your mailbox. It's payable to you, but the beneficiaries are the Businesses and Corporations 'hurt' by the faltering economy.

The latest scheme is both insidious and brilliant. My guess is that most will think this is a great idea and will benefit the poor and middle class. Yet the reality is that the people NOT qualified to get the 'rebate' ('Ya gotta LOVE that term for getting back your own money!) who stand to benefit the most.

The Bill will produce $28 Billion of checks based upon the source article. Helping the struggling mortgage industry or the utility companies or the auto manufacturers by giving them a $28 Billion handout, having an overall cost of $100 Billion, may have caused a revolution. Instead of doing that - why not give it to the naive general public in an amount large enough to seem material, but small enough not to actually change their situation? Don't follow me?

What will you do with your check? Catch up on a late mortgage payment? Pay an outstanding Xmas bill? Pay for gas? Pay for a larger than usual utility bill (This global warming has been particularly bad this year - hasn't it?) Who knows, maybe some will use it for a DP on a new car? Or take a day trip somewhere? All these uses for your tax dollars coming back to you help bail out the Corporations and greatly benefit those running them. The high income individuals won't be getting one check - but they'll be getting a whole collection of yours; and as a result - their 1st quarter bonuses are assured. Trust me - it will be MUCH larger than the max $1,200.00 being sent under this program.

Doubt that logic - check out the NY Stock Exchange. The Bulls came out and bought big time once Speaker Pelosi and John Boehner announced their bi-partisan support for this plan. How nice, once again we have an example of the Republicans, Democrats, House, Senate, and Executive branches of the government all in agreement. Anyone remember the last time this occurred?- - - - - - - time's UP! It was the Immigration Amnesty Bill, the last Corporate Welfare getting bi-partisan support - that time directed to insuring a cheap labor pool into the next generation. Only a grass root, very vocal and adamant outcry prevented that from becoming law. But now, by including a bribe in the package, I doubt there will be a similar public outcry.

And could there be better timing? An election year - where the incumbents can go back home to campaign with $600-$1,200 or more  - checks in their hands! Let's hear it for Bi-Partisanship! Release the re-elect the incumbent voting lemmings!

One other thing that is too important to include in the general quote below:
quote:

The rebates were expected to cost about $100 billion, and the package also includes close to $50 billion in business tax cuts.
Those who were "left behind" as a result of public education and are deficient in math skills should note; although the emphasis is being placed on the big check the people will be getting, there is $50 Billion allocated in the Bill for "business tax cuts". $50 Billion is $22 Billion MORE than the estimated $28 Billion going to individuals. Who says that PAC contributions to politicians don't payoff? You can bet the Banking and Mortgage industries will be sure to take advantage of those cuts in ways you can't comprehend to do with your personal $600.00

Want to do something about it? Don't spend the check - save it. At least spend it in the 'underground' economy. Don't go to Walmart, K-Mart, Target, or Costco. Don't buy a new car. Don't agree with your mortgage collection clerk suggesting you use it to 'catch up on your interest'. How about collectively organizing a protest movement where the checks are burned like the old burned draft card days? Nah - I hear that the new batch of Wii games is in route and should be in stores timed for the arrival of the welfare checks - just endorse the back and hand it over to Circuit City or Best Buy, the intended beneficiary.

quote:

WASHINGTON (AP) - Congressional leaders announced a deal with the White House Thursday on an economic stimulus package that would give most tax filers refunds of $600 to $1,200, and more if they have children.

The rebates, which would go to about 116 million families, had appeal for both Democrats and Republicans. Pelosi's staff noted that they would include $28 billion in checks to 35 million working families who wouldn't have been helped by Bush's original proposal. Republicans, for their part, were pleased that the bulk of the rebates—more than 70 percent, according to an analysis by Congress' Joint Tax Committee—would go to individuals who pay taxes.

The rebates would phase out gradually for individuals whose income exceeds $75,000 and couples with incomes above $150,000, aides said. Individuals with incomes up to $87,000 and couples up to $174,000 would get partial rebates. The caps are higher for those with children.

DomKen -> RE: Economic Stimulus Packaged Approved - Your Check is ALMOST in the Mail (1/24/2008 2:29:12 PM)

Most people will get $600 per adult and $300 additional per child but the checks won't go out until the early summer which is pretty silly if it is supposed to be a right now stimulus package. Merc's right this is just a scam to protect the corps put the money in the bank and help yourself.

Ken,
Putting it in a bank serves the banks. Better to 'save' it by converting it to gold or even silver - better appreciation potential and it doesn't serve the intended corporate beneficiaries.

I was just listening to 'New Hampshire Public Radio' (it's the only station that broadcasts the BBC) and they were saying that the $600 were going to households that had an income of $75,000 a year.

75000 or less and you get a check. I told Fox I am not holding my breath. If I do get something, it'll to the same bills the rest of my money goes to.

I just got this off the MSNBC site...

I'm not holding my breath...(as fun as it is)

Who gets what

How Americans in different financial situations would fare under the rebate plan proposed by House leaders and the White House.

An individual with $2,500 in earned income in 2007: Disqualified because income fell below the $3,000 threshold. No rebate.

A married couple with no children, with adjusted gross income of $100,000 in 2007: Would qualify for the full $1,200 couples. A $1,200 rebate.

A worker with one child, who earned $9,000 and owed no taxes in 2007: Would qualify for the $300 rebate available to individuals who pay no taxes but earned at least $3,000, plus an additional $300 for the child. A $600 rebate.

A couple with income of $145,000 in 2007, with three children: Would qualify for the full $1,200 for couples, plus $300 for each child. A $2,100 rebate.

A couple with income of $160,000 in 2007 with two children: Would qualify for a partial rebate, reduced by 5 percent for every $1,000 in income above the $150,000 threshold. An $1,800 rebate — $1,200 for the couple plus $300 per child — would go down by 50 percent for this family. A $900 rebate.

A couple with income of $200,000 and four children: Disqualified because their income exceeded $174,000, the phase-out limit. No rebate.

How much for a:

Single guy, with income less than $75,000 but bigger than a breadbox, supporting six cats?

So...The gov. is going to give Me back 600 dollars of My own money, and that's supposed to relieve My economic woes? Gee...Thanks a lot. Even if every taxpayer out there got the max of 1200 dollars, does the gov. actually think that's going to get us out of the recession that our President doesn't even think we're in? I could actually shorten this post by cutting and pasting this little piece of it:

                                                                        "does the gov. actually think"

So... what can the average citizen do, other than vote for Ron Paul to help stop all this nonsense? If he can't stop it, at least he'll endeavor to bring it to the attention of the sheeple... whereas, none of the other politicians will.

Oh, I disagree. Those in government think very well. Unfortunately, the biggest beneficiaries of their thinking is not the citizenry.

That entails a much longer and more detailed response that i was going for though [8|]

Merriam-Webster seems to think it is a fine term to use for getting back some of your own money.

Main Entry:  re·bate
Pronunciation: \ˈrē-ˌbāt\
Function:  noun

a return of a part of a payment

Works for me.

I'm not sure why you take such exception to this plan.  Some people who pay taxes are going to get part of them back.  Yes, I'm sure a lot of businesses and corporations will benefit because the taxpayers are going to spend that money.  However, this is supposed to be an economic stimulus package and the last time I checked, businesses and corporations were an integral part of the economy.

The taxpayers get to spend some money they hadn't planned on having available to spend... which means they get the benefit of whatever they chose to spend the money on.  Businesses (who employ those taxpayers) get to benefit from increased sales.

Sounds like a win/win situation to me for both the taxpayers and the businesses.

Now whether the economy as a whole benefits from this "shot in the arm", I couldn't say; I'm not an economist and it's too early in the morning to really think about it.  I'm sure there are numerous and complicated downfalls to the plan, but in the short-term it does appear (on the surface, at least) to do exactly what it's meant to do... stimulate some buying and selling.

farglebargle -> RE: Economic Stimulus Packaged Approved - Your Check is ALMOST in the Mail (1/25/2008 5:25:08 AM)

Wait a sec...

People who DIDN'T PAY TAX will get a "Rebate"???

mefisto69 -> RE: Economic Stimulus Packaged Approved - Your Check is ALMOST in the Mail (1/25/2008 5:26:10 AM)

I'm still waiting for the Last rebate check.

mnottertail -> RE: Economic Stimulus Packaged Approved - Your Check is ALMOST in the Mail (1/25/2008 5:29:58 AM)

Yanno, since everyone is throwing our money around like they own the fucking stuff.......

I wonder what the war in Iraq has cost?

290 trill or something........don't have the war.

give 20,000 dollars to everyone, how many going to go blow it at the bar?

should stimulate some cash flow.

Jessie Ventura gave us 300 bucks rebate once, subsequent tax hikes calculated out to it looked like it cost me about 900 bucks to accept that 300 bucks.

Ben Steins Money

Since the near collapse of the Northern Rock building society over here was occasioned (apprently) by the subprime mortgage mess in the US which has led to the dire situation, and since to bail out said building society is costing each of us in the UK (apparently) £2000-00, ($4000-00), I have only one question;

Where do I apply?

I will spend it on US products, honestly. If I can find any.
