I remember when the weird kid was the one who didn't have his own pocket knife. Now I'm viewd by most as a dangerous freak for having one.

Oh well, he would have been given a citation for having such a flash light on an airplane. Such an object could have done many things in a school. Picking locks, shuting down power, taking someone out, hot wireing a bus, etc..... are just a few nifty things that this multi tool flash light can be used for.

High School sucks. Enjoy your flash light in college.

The attackers of 9/11,used "Leatherman  multi-tools",to hi-jack the jets.Everybody`s seen them worn on belts ,w/ a boxy brown leather sheath .They looks like pliers when opened, but also have a blade.

Before 9/11,you could carry one of these on-board a plane or jet.The knife ,is a lock-blade and is as sturdy as a Buck lock-blade.

A knife is a knife,even if it`s folded into a dorky multi-tool.

Actually, the 9/11 hijackers used the US GOVERNMENTS FAULTY RULES OF ENGAGEMENT to hijack the jets.

The failure was the United States' policy of cooperating with the Saudi Terrorists. The folks on Flight 93 did NOT cooperate with the Saudi Terrorists, and that's why they're heroes.

Lesson To Learn: The US Government is WRONG. Don't listen to their stupid ideas.

They can't keep weapons out of PRISONS, what makes them think they can keep them off airliners?

Great logic,Farg...................not.

I remember a great "All In The Family" show, where Archy is interviewed one day,in a "Man on the Street" segment of a news show. He`s asked about air travel security, terrorism, etc., and says the answer, is to pass "rods"(guns) out to all the passengers as the board.lol He then says the guns should  be collected, as people exit the plane.

Makes sense,kinda.

They didn't allow pocket knives when I was in school either, so this is nothing new.  Of course, they didn't call the cops on us either.  They just confiscated it, and gave us detention.  We actually got it back if we had a parent come up to the school to get it.  The only time I ever got suspended from school was for smoking in the bathroom, and that happened every year.  lol

It is overkill, but kids do some wacky shit in school now a days.  Being an honor roll student certainly doesn't exclude you from the rules.  I did well in school too, but I was a hoodlum.  Lots of bright kids are.

You`re right about the over-board aspect. This is a good kid who wants to be a 1st responder. If this screws that up,it would be really wrong.

Hard to believe 5th graders in the 50's could bring interesting guns for show & tell... In Texas anyway.

I don't think it will.  I got popped for a minor juvie offense when I was a teenager, and it didn't affect my future.  It's come up on background checks.  But no one ever hassled me for it.  I have to have a security clearance for my job, and it along with a public intoxication in college came up.  But the investigator thought it was funny when I explained it to him.  I think investigators know that young people do things like this.  I absolutely agree they should have not called the police in on it.  A parent-teacher conference would have settled the whole matter.

Fang, you are nucking futs, stick around !

I can't say this has never happened, but I have never, ever had said to me "I see you got suspended from school once" by anyone.

A police record on the other hand, I dunno. Might be a bit harsh. The inconvenience thusfar might have been warranted, and he should take that as a lesson to always be aware of what is, and what is not in his pockets.

There is a problem with having a juvenile record, it is sealed. They can't find out if you stuck a snickers in your pocket when you were five or robbed a bunch of banks. Thing is, in some cases it boils down to whether you have a juvenile record or not.

Judge not lest ye be judged. I need to take over the world so bad. If I were the judge I would do this :

"Boy, and I call you that because of age, I didn't mean anything else. Anyway listen up. Every day of your life you must know what you have and do not have. You screwed up.

The fact of the matter is that you broke the rules and the law. Of that there is no doubt. And never mind that someone could have stolen it from you and used for purposes you never intended, and if you didn't even know it was there, you would never know it was missing.

See this gentleman over here in uniform, the baliff ? Well if he walked through certain doors in this building with his gun, his service revolver which he is totally authorized to carry, if he forgets and doesn't check his weapon, or put it in a locker or something, he could be under arrest for a felony. You must be diligent in this respect.

I am going to adjudicate that this charge be summarily dismissed. I do that based on a basic tenet of our law, intent. Due to your record I find that there was no intent. But don't do it again, do not be reckless in that regard.

A school is supposed to be safe, and you don't just have to think what you might do with something, you have to think what others COULD do with it"

Thing is, the kid never got caught with a joint, cigarettee, alcoholic beverage ? Never truant, suspended or expelled. Nothing of the sort.

That is why there are judges and juries. Otherwise a computer could handle it.

But yup, I do agree it is over. When it comes down to a kid carrying what amounts to a Swiss army knife of sorts, becoming newsworthy and warranting criminal charges, I think we might be in some trouble.

There was a day when kids brought shotguns to school for show-n-tell.

Yes, a pretty miniscule blade at that, you could probably get more penetration from using a pencil or indeed, a ball point pen.

Contrary to popular belief, someone armed with a penknife is not invincible, the holder forgets one thing, a person's leg is a lot longer and more powerful than an arm with a tiddly blade grasped so tightly. A swift kick in the balls makes a knife wielder suddenly forget the sole point of their focus.

As to airlines, anything could be fashioned to cut, including those nasty little plastic knives that cut sod all else and rely on cutting through something by friction alone.

As to terrorists, well, there is so much more now available if they seek it, metal is not the only material for weapons, materials exist which are invisible to the all seeing eyes of the airport scanner.

If the Feds can't keep weapons out of Prisons, why would anyone think they can secure an airport?

Actually, the ones used on 9/11, had sturdy 3"or 3.5" blades, which lock into the metal handle.About as strong a knife as you can get, though there are better knives.More than enough length, to pierce the abdomen,or cut a vital tube.

Those thugs took a stewardess, and cut her throat from behind, scaring the crap out of everyone as she bled out. Then grabbed someone else and threatened to kill them also and got into the cockpit this way.

After that, there was little an average person could do.

A group of extraordinary people, did take out the attackers in one jet,Flight 93,which crashed in Shanksville,PA.Who knows what they did,and how they suffered,to stop those savages.

Schools are getting paranoid to the point of stupidity. Throughout high school I carried a Swiss Army knife, and never once used it as a weapon, though I was in several fights.

When I went to school, we werent allowed to have anything that could be used against another student as a weapon. No pocket knives, no box cutters regardless of what type of jobs we had after school... problem was not the tons of students who would never think of using them on someone else.  Problem was the one or two who DID. All it takes is one stupid student and people have restrictions.
As an honor student worried about his rep, he should have known better than to bring the tool to school. The cops overreacted, yes. In this day and age, thats more common than anything else, though.
