My slave and I get along really well.  We like to hang out and enjoy each other's company.
There is one or two things we cannot talk about without ending up in an argument.  I am wondering if the rest of you have implemented topic restraints from your visits with your sub/slaves?
Our topic is politics.  He is a Republican.  I am a Democrat.  It gets very intense.  The worst arguement we ever had was over Bill Clinton.
I cannot beat him because he is a republican.  I told him how I was voting, and I know how he is voting.  That is his choice.
I give him choices.
Geeze.

I would not say we have any topics that we agree not to discuss but we do have a couple of topics that if they do get brought up there is an understanding that if they do get heated that during that time or little afterwards I am not judged on my attitude or demeanor toward him.

One topic like you is politics with the exact roles and the other is religion.

I'm weird, I find debate a form of foreplay.  The only time I get frustrated and drop out of a debate is when I feel the other person isn't hearing me and is hell bent on converting me.

No, we don't have any topics that are off limits.  If he doesn't feel like talking about something, we don't talk about it, but nothing has officially stated as "Don't bring this up" topics.

I am not allowed to argue with him, though.  I can always state my opinion, and we can engage in opposing opinions, but I have learned how to converse with him without it getting disrespectful and still make my point.  I do love when he gets really passionate about a topic though; he gets so intense.  There are certain topics (most often religion) that rile him, but I love that passion.  How can I argue back when he's just so hot?!

What your slave needs to do is subscribe you to the deluxe edition of the 'Rush is Right' newsletter.
You'll soon see the error of your ways, look up to him with gratitude, and serve him in any way he pleases.

Yes. Dealing with that very thing today. Thankfully it is just one topic, and it has never been said to avoid it. More a tacit understanding that it just should not be brought up.This is one of the times when I'm glad I use an online journal that he can access, I can write about it so he knows I'm fretting even though it won't go anywhere.Yes I know too that it isn't the healthiest thing but it is what it is.

I have sometimes had this problem in the past because I did my Ph.D. in politics, and I'm very knowledgeable about political affairs. But the funny thing is: these days it's less of a problem because the more I learned about politics, the less desire I have to discuss or even participate in the activity. These days, people often come up to me and ask my impressions of a particular political situation (like the elections that are going on right now), and I find they come back more and more these days because I don't even have political opinions of the specific people and policies, but I have pretty much divorced myself from the subjective constraints and prefer to discuss the objective realities of what is happening rather than what I do or do not feel about issues or candidates. And I find this helps those around me have the best opportunity to come to an informed decision on their own without my "opinion" getting in the way. So, to answer the original question, I don't think that my current circumstances would ever get in the way unless I was owned by a Mistress who was very passionate about politics in one ideological direction and then demanded I, too, be as passionate. It might actually even be more interesting to me to actually TRY to be subjective.

As long as politics feels the need to get into private life, the political is personal.

This particular issue would never arise in my household because I simply would not have someone in it who did not hold very similar beliefs to those all ready in the household.

In fact, I don't the value in having an intimate relationship with someone I'd get into serious arguments with. I can that from the mundane world or from the family of origin. Why would I choose to freely associate with people whom I'd have such strong disagreements with?

Yes there are topics we cannot discuss without them turning into heated arguments so I have banned them from discussion. The problem is when he was younger he was told that he was stupid so whenever he had a discussion in which someone may not agree with him he turns into an argument. His stratedy is to make the other person feel stupid, the only problem is he is usually only seeing one perspective on the discussion and many times he ends up looking like an ass. So to fix that I placed the ban on some subjects.

Why not??

I'm amused by people who cannot discuss politics without getting edgy.  I'm a party official, and I've run for elected office myself.  I'm now friendlier with my opponents - regardless of who won the contest - than I was before we spent inordinate amounts of time [and obscene amounts of money] to defeat each other.

Since I'm totally anonymous here, I'll share a secret.  Even though I'm on the party committee, good governence isn't about party labels.  It is about the integrity, imagination, and grit of the individual.  I always split my ticket.  I vote for people, not labels.

Labels in politics are just as meaningless as labels in WIITWD.

I try to avoid discussing politics in intimate relationships.

I prefer to discuss religion and sex.

there are no topics we don't discuss.  communication is imperative in a good relationship, and talking with him is one of the best parts of my day.

Yep, had that, sent him packing, this is My house and we do not restrain spirited discourse---he had a list of topics that caused him angst--I had the list of times, the train departed.

I like to keep most topics open, as I love hearing someone elses reasons for what they are passionate about. I LOVE politics...so just because we disagree doesn't mean I would make it off limits. UNLESS...(and it's been previously said already on here...)

This starts happening. I like different opinons, but hate when its like your talking to a brick wall, that only decides to speak (and about nothing you've said) ONLY about how wrong you are...as if they have rehearsed their speech a hundred times.

anyway...

I just nearly fell out when I read that one.  He tries to get me to read Rush all the time.   We just have to agree to disagree on politics and religion.
