Oh jeez. What a lovely man. When I went with my ex to court while he untangled himself from DUI hell the judge told me not to bother standing for him because he could see it was an effort.So IMO it isn't a 'judge' thing, more a jerk thing. I would be pretty ticked off about it personally. No need to humiliate someone like that, not at all. He already holds power so what would using the power for that sort of petty stuff bring him? Sometimes people boggle my teensy mind.

Some people lack sensitivity. Judges included. Maybe judges especially, since they see so much stuff, they might become hardened.

I wouldnt have thought a beenie equalled a hat. To me that eguals a jewsih yarmakuh mostly.

I wonder if she had worn a burka what he would have done. Is that a hat? Is a scarf a hat? I wonder where the line is in his court.

Reminds me of a situation that happened to the niece of a co-worker of mine. This poor girl (fifteen years old) had cancer and the chemo made her totally bald. The principal of her high school refused to budge on the no hats or wigs rule and then concluded she should be kept out of the school altogether because, he "reasoned," her bald head would distract the other students from learning. This despite the fact the students first signed a petition asking that the girl be excluded from the no hats rule and then a second petition that her bald head did not bother them at all. Unbelievably, the school board backed the principal and refused to overturn the principal’s decision.

The students – in a fantastic display of the grassroots efforts that modern cell phone culture can bring about – took their protest a step further. The first day that she was officially banned from the school most of the students showed up with their heads completely shaved and wearing tee-shirts that said "bald is beautiful." In a nice twist many of the students donated their hair to Locks of Love, a charity that makes wigs for chemo patients. The school board, no doubt fearing adverse publicity should this attract the attention of the national media, reversed its course.

Alas, it came to late. The girl had entered the final stages of her disease and was bed ridden for two months before succumbing to it. Her mother addressed the students during the funeral, thanking them for her support and letting them know how grateful beyond words her daughter had been for the show of friendship and support.

What a truly heart warming story,and isn't it ironic that in that scenario that it was the kids who showed outstanding maturity and compassion instead of the adults(Kids schooling the school on tolerance).That's sad,and sometimes I wonder if we'll ever get it.

It happened about ten years ago in a small town not to far from me. I think the school board was just being a typical, that is craven, bureaucracy – following the path of least resistance. It is the seeming heartlessness of the principal that truly baffles me. And he didn’t stop there. When the girl died her friends posted pictures of her on her locker and put flowers and other mementos around it. The principal, citing "obstacles blocking the hallway," wouldn’t allow it and had the janitor take it all away. What the fuck this guy’s problem was is beyond me. I can only speculate that he, and that judge, have the same problem – having a permanently puckered sphincter which makes them cranky. As for the teens involved: it is true that teens can be incredibly selfish and cruel (which the media is quick to point out) but they can be equally compassionate and sometimes that natural rebellious streak of theirs – which can get them into so much trouble – can sometimes express itself in truly cleaver ways.

Sorry pahunkboy if I stole your thunder. But nearly every time I think about chemo I think of that asshole principal.

I think he's also wrong, etiquette-wise. I believe it's perfectly acceptable for ladies to wear hats indoors.

I am in total favor of the woman in this case. The ONLY reason that I can see to require her to remove her cap would be if her baldness was to be presented as some sort of evidence in a case. If she was claiming that she lost her hair as a result of medical treatments for a cancer that was supposedly caused by the defendent, then she should be required to show her baldness.

Otherwise, let her claim a medical reason for wearing a hat and don't argue with it. It is not hard to spot a cancer patient who is wearing a hat and someone who is claiming to be a cancer patient but has hair none the less. Making a false claim might not get you thrown out of court, but it will sure as heck hurt your case in the eyes of the judge.

Women are allowed to wear hats indoors according to etiquette. Since this judge is such a stickler for ettiquite, maybe the girl's dad aught to show up with dueling pistols, slap the fucker in the face with his glove, and motion him towards the river to settle the matter like gentlemen. What a fucking prick!

It doesn't really have anything to do with ettiquette. Court rules everywhere say you cannot wear a hat in Court. That having been said, the way most of the judges do it here is the baliff or deputies take care of those details before the judge enters. If someone is wearing a hat for medical reasons, I've personally seen them explain it to the bailiff/deputy who then tells the judge. Bad hair day doesn't count, although I've seen that tried as well. I have never seen a judge tell someone who was going through chemo to take off their hat and it's not uncommon to see people under those circumstances in court. The other exception I've seen is religious reasons (although much rarer). There are people that do have to have their head covered for religious reasons or during high holidays. I've never seen a judge demand they not adhere to their religious beliefs either.

This guy obviously had what I call "robism" as in the damn black dress has gone to his big fat head.

Laurell those court rules come from ettiquite, there is no security reason for it. The only reason they make women do it now is to avoid cries of discrimination. The judges that do this are just cowards. For a man, removing your hat shows respect. The same rule of ettiquite does not apply to women, and it never used to be done in courts. Like I said, the judges today are cowards. It's up to them, and they don't have to do this silly shit.
