Computer question - 1/11/2008 12:16:11 AM

Status: offline 		Just got a new computer.
It works but an icon says "no drive connected." What do I do about that?
Also, when I'm in a site and press on a picture there's no "Back" button to go back to the previous page! I have to "x" it out to get out of it. What do I do about that?
I may have a few more questions until I get this thing going.
It's an E-Machine with some new operating system.
Thanks.

Status: offline 		Since it boots it is not talking about the primary Hard Drive. That could refer to a CD rom or DVD drive, a secondary HD or an old 3.5 floppy. Does it specify?

Check in the Device Manager for conflicts.

Status: offline 		For the no-back-button thing, there's one of two things I think it may be.

1.  It may be a new window (a lot of sites have a new window pop up for the picture).  In this case, you'll just have to close the new window.. no worries, the page you clicked on the picture from should still be there.

2. It may be doing something similar to (1), only in a new tab.  Some web browsers allow you to visit multiple pages in the same window on different tabs.  Typically, the tab bar's under the address bar.  If you close that particular tab, the previous should come up.

If it's neither of those things, I'm not really sure.

For the "no drive connected" icon..

Well, actually, I'd speculate, but first is it a Windows, Mac, Linex, or otherwise computer?

Status: offline 		If you have extra buttons on your mouse you could assign one to the back function. This works for internet and for folder browsing too. You could assign a hot key for it.

Status: offline 		I would say most likely that some software is loaded for an external USB or whatever drive. There would be no other reason for it.

Question, is this a BRAND NEW PC ? Or is it used, refurb or what ? And if it is new, I think you would figure out if you bought an external drive with it that they might throw the software in. So you would not have asked.

But then maybe you only think it is new. There is alot of that going around.

So was it purported to be totally new or not ? If not, you might need to restore it. Better than they did.

As for "hot" buttons and such, I'm a very basic user when it comes to computers.
So I don't know about that stuff.
Is there a button I could push to get back to a previous window?

Status: offline 		Okay, so it's Windows Vista.  Sorry, but I haven't used that system much yet, so I'm not sure if there's a feature to it I'm unaware of.

Would you mind if we did a test?

There's a website, Allahkazam's Magical Realm, which has information on different video games.  For some reason which I laugh at myself for lack of seeing, on their EverQuest page, there's a popup picture, but the counterpart on the World of Warcraft page isn't a popup.

So, here's the test:

1.  Please click this link to visit the EverQuest page.  Near the top of the page, centered under "Media Box" should be a small picture ("thumb nail") which you can click to make larger.

This picture should open up a new window and you will not have a Back option.  Closing the window should return you to the page the link took you to.

2.  Now, please click this link to visit the World of Warcraftpage.  In the same position, you should find another picture.

When you click it, it should open up that picture in the same window.  This should provide you with a Back option.


If you do the above two steps, does it work?  (In the first, does clicking the X on the window get you back to the first page?  In the second, does the Back button work?)  If not, how is it different?


As for the "disk" message error, it may be referring to anything from an unplugged component to simply the absense of a USB thumb drive (the latter of which may be more likely).  If it's not causing you a problem, it may be something to just ignore.  Since it's not something others here can really see, it'd be pretty hard to figure out exactly what it is. If you wanted to try, though, right-clicking it and looking for options such as "Do not display", "Exit", "Ignore" or something like that might work.

Funny thing is that I can see the back and forward buttons but when I click on them...nothing.

Status: offline 		well....first off....you bought an E-Machine, so, unless you had a half off coupon, you got screwed...and then you got it new so it comes with windows vista...it will drive you nuts...but you have what you have so...the no drive connected thing is due to the fact that you have a place for 4 drives to be connected to your IDE cables: Primary Master, Primary Slave, Secondary Master, Secondary Slave, most computers these days if they have a 3.5" floppy drive, have a cable dedicated to the floppy rather than having to be adapted to run off on those 4, so that leaves typically a hard drive, a CD burner and a DVD player, and often the CD Burner is combined with a DVD Burner in one unit so you have two free IDE connectors...when most computers are assembled the Primary cable is dedicated to the hard drive and that throws a "no drive connected" because the computer doesn't "care" about the secondary cable, but recognizes an empty spot on the primary cable...

my daignosis...return the emachine, find a geeky friend to build you a bigger, better computer for the same price you bought the emachine at, they probably have a copy of windows XP, and you can buy a license for it on ebay....

You're dealing with 'tabbed' browsing in Internet Explorer 7 I think.  If you'll notice, there's probably space for a few tabs between your address bar, and the actual webpage.  Do you see more than one tab?  If so, that's where the 'back' pages are; on another tab.

As for the 'no drive connected' it sounds like a backup program or other preconfigured issue.  Does it give you balloon warnings, or is it just something that you see in Windows Explorer?

Status: offline 		Stephann, it doesn't seem to be a problem, it's probably for an auxiliary drive.
I chhecked it and the "C" drive is working and online.
Yeah, I see the tabs I'd just prefer a "Back" button.
I wonder If I can run two operating systems on this comp? I like windows XP too so it would be nice to be able to switch from one to another(XP to Vista and visa versa) when I wanted.

Having said that, I use Vista and my back button on IE7 works fine; might be a fluke with your installation.  Give firefox a try, and maybe that'll be your fix.

As for dual boot systems, I also have Windows XP.  The short answer, is if you have one OS, you're not likely to use the other one. I only had XP because the webcam I had wouldn't install on Vista, and if I wanted to use it I had to boot into XP.  Trust me, the time, effort, and pain you'll spend as a novice adjusting your hard drive to accomodate both systems is on par with donating a kidney.  At least with the kidney donation, you're improving the world.

I'd just try to make do with Vista, or completely roll back to XP if I were you.  Don't try to serve two masters.

I'll stay with Vista for a few weeks to get familiar with it.
If I still don't like it I can take it back to Bestbuy and have them install Windows XP on it?
