You might find with Vista that everything loads a lot slower too. Vista is a memory hog, and for a while my Vista (an E-Machines) was a lot slower than my XP. If you can invest in more memory and get it put in, it would be to your benefit. Good luck!

It's kinda funny. I mean, XP is a memory hog compared to 98, but I've gladly accepted that for the vastly improved stablity. My 98, when virus free, froze up about 15 times per week if constantly used; XP, on the other hand, hasn't frozen on me despite constant usage for years.

But since XP isn't freezing, I wonder what advantages could Vista offer to compensate for its more consuming nature?

well....first off....you bought an E-Machine, so, unless you had a half off coupon, you got screwed...and then you got it new so it comes with windows vista...it will drive you nuts...but you have what you have so...the no drive connected thing is due to the fact that you have a place for 4 drives to be connected to your IDE cables: Primary Master, Primary Slave, Secondary Master, Secondary Slave, most computers these days if they have a 3.5" floppy drive, have a cable dedicated to the floppy rather than having to be adapted to run off on those 4, so that leaves typically a hard drive, a CD burner and a DVD player, and often the CD Burner is combined with a DVD Burner in one unit so you have two free IDE connectors...when most computers are assembled the Primary cable is dedicated to the hard drive and that throws a "no drive connected" because the computer doesn't "care" about the secondary cable, but recognizes an empty spot on the primary cable...

my daignosis...return the emachine, find a geeky friend to build you a bigger, better computer for the same price you bought the emachine at, they probably have a copy of windows XP, and you can buy a license for it on ebay....

take care
chelle

What’s an E-Machine? And how is it different from a normal PC?

Thanks in advance

Just got a new computer.
It works but an icon says "no drive connected." What do I do about that?
Also, when I'm in a site and press on a picture there's no "Back" button to go back to the previous page! I have to "x" it out to get out of it. What do I do about that?
I may have a few more questions until I get this thing going.
It's an E-Machine with some new operating system.
Thanks.

Popeye...I've done some rather extensive research on your issue.

After careful consideration...I've come to the obvious conclusion....

Your computer's a piece of shit.

(Try buying one that costs more than $399.00)

Well, I'm getting used to this thing now.
Thanks Stephann for the tab info and thanks to everyone else as well for your input!
It's not too bad, it takes a  few seconds to load things but when it does it really functions very well.
As for "E-Machines" I don't know who makes them but brand names don't impress me anyway.
I buy store brand mayonaise that's cheaper. There's only one way to make mayonaise or ketchup or a lot of things.
Plus, this thing has 250 GB hardrive while the Compact POS it replaces had 160GBs and this has twice that "512" thing that the Compact had.

Popeye,
I just got a Vista machine and am still learning the new system as well. Unfortunately I'm out of town right now and am on one of my XP laptops. As soon as I get home I will play with Vista and see if I can duplicate your issue. Also think there might be two other ways to go back but want to check them out to be sure. Should be home late tomorrow night. Will try to post as soon after as I can.

YEAH GOOD ANSWER! Love to know there are more tech people in the world.

I work tech support and if I hear one more idjit tell me, I don't know anything about this I just want it to work. I will scream

There is likly a software solution to this, I would consider going into MMS and seeing how many drives that the OS is reporting, and if necessary just turn it off

Popeye,

In Vista you can right click on a window and have a menu pop up that has a "back" selection that works the same as a back button. This also works in XP but as you upgraded from 98 you might have never seen that feature before. I just checked to be sure this worked in Vista and it worked like a charm.

Ok, now when I go into Yahoo or Myspace and hit on something the Google error window keeps popping up!
I hit the "back" button and it keeps popping up!
How do I get rid of that?

you can't install XP on a new computer using an old key, the key is associated with the motherboard...i love microsoft...

And it goes even farther than the motherboard - I had to re-register my XP when all I did was replace the video card and add new memory!

Ok, nothing seems to be working.
How do I get rid of Google?
