if emo had a metal band Atreyu would be that band! Another thing heavy metal came from the blues....its the devils's music some evangilists might say but if you want a good book that has better history of heavy metal,not mainstream,you might want to check out LORDS OF CHAOS,it deffines the history and rise of the satanic metal undergrond "Black metal as well as death metal...and sevreal other genres, and Lucifer Riseing is a good book as well it has a taste full over view of a couple other tastfull genres like Black,Death,industrial etc,as well as a good spirtual and political view.

Thats the thing though Seeks, you know?

I have a very good ear for music - too good, in that it means I can play stuff I just heard, construct chords and tell if someone is playing a wrong note or chord without having the faintest idea of the musical technicalities involved! I'd really like to learn it, but you know - its far too much fun when one has an electric guitar and distortion pedal to just do it rather than read about it. What I'm finding now as I look into the musical theory - I actually bought a chord book the other day - is that all the jargon and correct nomenclature used is very confusing, compared to what sounds right.

Example - the other night, we were playing "Nothing Else Matters" (Metallica - slow number you'd like, I'm sure). I can play it straight off, whilst my friend is insisting I'm doing it wrong - "not like it says in the book". We look in the book, and sure enough I'm playing it differently (different strings and frets etc) - but, I'm playing exactly the right notes, and whats more the way I'm playing it is actually really simple and sounds more like the original than the over complicated version in the book - with which my friend is struggling. Similar experience with "Enter Sandman" (also Metallica - but not one that might appeal to you as much I expect).

Really skilled musicians can substitute chords all over the place and it just sounds "good"
Can you naturally sing in harmony. Voice quality irrelevent. Find harmony by instinct.
Thats a good clue as to your intrinsic musical ability.
Try and play the Beatles Yesterday without looking at any music.
I cant come up with anything newer 'cos I dont follow pop music nowadays.

Hummm... I've never been a huge fan of metal, but there have been a few bands that are pretty close to metal that I've liked: Type O, Sleep Chamber, Cradle of Filth, Rammstien, etc...

Strangely yes - I can sing, and I can improvise to the melody usually quite readily. I always think its a shame that some groups dont put in second voice harmonies alongside the main vocal line, as when I do it for them, it always sounds good.

I also get remonstrated with frequently for not using the little gizmo to tune my guitar at our little group sessions; anyone can do it that way after all - well, anyone who can distinguish between slightly different tones of the same note anyway.

When playing, harmonic feel is required..IMO

Can you naturally harmonise them. I cant but I know those that can, if they try, can usually play an instrument reasonably well.
The reason I chose Yesterday is 'cos there is a change of key right at the start. Give it a go and let me know what happens. I found it impossible till I bought the music.
