"A pint and a fight" is the norm round here I'm afraid. After all, one isnt a real man unless one downs a gallon of Stella, then beats the crap out of someone - and if one is female then one must do as the boys do, for the feminist cause.

How many fights did you see last time you were out?

Lady E, dont you think that if a helicopter had to be sent up over the same town every saturday night, the media wouldnt be aware of it ? I will also say that the underclass you mention are far from the ones causing trouble in towns and cities, as i said before, its mostly youngsters with a decent income.

Since you mentioned Thatchers quote again let me post just the last line again too.

" It is our duty to look after ourselves and then, also, to look after our neighbours "

This is totally at odds with what you keep saying. Think about the binge drinking, is that not a case where people should be responsible for their own behaviour ?

well, here's a good one.

Last night, just as I was preparing to get in the bath - shouting and shrieking and doors being banged. I look outside, and there is a party of "fun loving revellers", and at the opposite neighbour's door (she's another alcoholic to add to the one I already have as a neighbour), two women who have been partaking in "a leisurely evening in a good Olde England pub", calling for the occupant to come outside and settle a dispute, apparently regarding the possibility that someone might be a "fuckin' bitch".

It continued for a half an hour or so in like manner, the party of "fun loving revellers" at times coming to the door too, to invite the occupant to have her dental physiology acquainted in more proximate relations with her digestive system than is naturally the case. At around seven against one, the odds did seem good that this might be the result should the door be opened.

Then the police arrived. Cue endless denials of any wrongdoing from the party of "fun loving revellers", accompanied by an insistence from the one woman, who had clearly had the most fun of all that evening, that the occupant of the house was a "fuckin' bitch" whose anatomy ought to be rearranged. Another hour of two police officers trying to get the crowd to move on then ensued, before the police van arrived to remove them to a suitable place where they might reflect on their use of leisure time.

Of course, this is the first time ever that such a thing has occurred here..........

Lady E, drink is a problem yes, but it always has been. London was in a worse state with street drunks 300 years ago. You dont know what was behind last nights dispute and assume they had all come from "A leisurely evening in a good Olde England pub"  That may be true but they could also have just as easy been drinking at home all day. Still you evade the question, " Do we go back to just chucking these people in mental hospitals, or do we try and deal with them in the community ?

Im really not trying to be picky here, but unless everyone agrees to pay much higher taxes to fund treatment centres, there are no easy answers. Even then there will always be a certain amount of drunks and mentally ill on the streets. Sad but true.

Above all, we must engineer a society in which people's lives are not so fucked up and frustrated that they must resort to getting blind drunk (or stoned) to escape and thereby cause disproportionate nuisance to the whole. Scared of social engineering? Well, its going on all around us right now with far less ethical aims in mind.

And yes, we must fund proper prison provision for where its necessary in each case, we must fund proper alcohol and drug addiction treatment and we must fund proper facilities for the treatment of those who otherwise struggle in the world.

Mind you, such projects are far from sexy, compared to Olympic stadia et al - and the people who would benefit from them can be ignored as to their needs - after all, theyre only criminals, psychopaths and addicts.

Lady E, dont start me on what the olympics is going to cost the tax payer. It will be a bigger white elephant than the millenium dome. Maybe the money from the lottery funds could be put to better use.
