ghitaPVH -> My cat is confused (12/15/2007 9:40:00 AM)

About 6 months ago we took all of our female cats to get fixed. Now, two of them are outside meowing like they are in heat with the rear end up in the air and their tails off to the side........

weird cats.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: My cat is confused (12/15/2007 9:43:51 AM)

Actually I'd say get them checked out.  A friend of mine had her cat done and the cat still went into heat- turns out the surgeon had left an ovary and lots of other bits of tissue still in the body.

pahunkboy -> RE: My cat is confused (12/15/2007 9:51:20 AM)

maybe they were switched.

ghitaPVH -> RE: My cat is confused (12/15/2007 11:50:24 AM)

switched with what? different cats? I think they are just rampant sluts...but, I think Im going to make an appointment for them nonetheless...

Lucylastic -> RE: My cat is confused (12/15/2007 1:48:28 PM)

Have them checked out for sure, but all 3 of my male cats have been fixed, and they still "spray"...nothing comes out, but they go thru the motions.  I've seen this behavior before in fixed males, but have never heard of anything like that happening in a fixed female.  It seems a little odd that it's two of them, tho.  Damn hormones!

BTW, Lucy.......[sm=biggrin.gif].  Luckily I had just swallowed my pepsi!

Does that mean you're outside meowing like you are in heat with your rear end up in the air and your tail....

Never mind.

camille65 -> RE: My cat is confused (12/15/2007 1:55:11 PM)

I swear Barney went into heat a few times after being spayed. Yes Barney is female (shortened from Barnacle because she would curl up in my hair and drool). Now I think she is going senile, does anyone know if cats can go senile or get dementia? She is 20.

NaiveTempest -> RE: My cat is confused (12/15/2007 2:41:49 PM)

I think your cats are pissed cause they know they've been fixed so they're tormenting you.

Or...

It could be that they're advertising "Free booty calls without having to worry about giving child support to litters!" Really loud and proud like.

OMG Lucy I just got that, LOL

petdave -> RE: My cat is confused (12/15/2007 4:22:38 PM)

My female cat still "presented" for a while after getting fixed... don't know if it was force of habit, or lingering hormones from her pregnancy, but it went on for quite a while. What was disturbing was that she usually did it to me [&:]

One of our male cats also tries to spray despite being neutered at 2 months of age.

Cats are weird.

Yes, get them checked. Maybe it is also a "ghost" heat; they still think they are natural, persay.
Then again, maybe they are just wierd; one of my cats eats plastic and the other one thinks she's a dog

youngsubgeoff -> RE: My cat is confused (12/15/2007 6:09:26 PM)

Is there something wrong with being a rampant slut? [:D]

I had a friend who had her cat fixed and she still would act out and tease my male till he got close enough and then she would turn around and slap his nose.  I wonder why they are doing this?

This is often the reason,  bits of ovary tissue remaining that will continue to produce heat cycles, it happens with dogs as well and usually means a second surgery to correct

animals can develop senility and  a form of alzhiemers as well that starts earlier,  if serious enough a vet can be consulted about possible  medications that sometimes help with cognitive function(I know meds do exist for dogs not sure about cats), discuss side effects of the meds and weigh whether having more cognitive function outweighs  the sideffects of the meds based on age, for example  a med may be hard on the liver if given daily over time but it could take 3 years before the accumulative effects damage the liver but giving an animal the opportunity to function without getting lost walk from one room to another or forgetting to eat or groom may be more important to you  than the shorter lifespan especially in a cat  that is 20, if the cat is still functionally okay just a tad confused  then you have to ask yourself if shortening the possible  lifespan worth it. Even in the case of a cat that is 10 and has alzheimers and is getting lost trying to find the litterbox so ends up going everywhere in the house an owner may feel more happiness having 3 years with  the cat being able to find its litterbox and still remaining a cherished companion rather than having 10 more years  and being angry with the cat for turning the whole house into a litterbox or dumping in a shelter because you feel you can't deal with the mess/smell anymore

camille65 -> RE: My cat is confused (12/16/2007 6:44:21 PM)

Her happiness is the most important thing to me, her level of comfort or at least what I can determine of that. She seems content except at night. All night. Every night. Dang she is loud lol. Food is her issue, she will only eat one brand of dry and a small amount of that. Her wet food was discontinued (can we say 'panic') so now she dines on fresh chicken. She seems to literally forget she has eaten a pretty large quantity of chicken and just freaking howls for more all night even if I get up and feed her.It begins with a low rumble then escalates into a nail biting, hair curling & ear splitting howl. Love my kitty hehehe. Her bowel/urinary habits are fine, her grooming is iffy only because her fur is soooo long but otherwise she is remarkably healthy. I've begun stashing her in the basement at night when the howl begins and she certainly remembers that. I pay with bitten toes.Love my kitty uhhuh. [:D] I won't drug her unless she seems to be in pain or horribly disoriented, that would be a last resort. Hmmmm can one use a ball gag on a cat?Love my kitty, I will just keep onna chanting that every night. Yup I love my ancient, fiesty and biting Barney!
