LONDON (AP) -- A lock of John Lennon's hair sold for $48,000 Wednesday in an auction of Beatles' memorabilia collected by the band's hairdresser.

The hair — inside an autographed copy of Lennon's book "A Spaniard in the Works" — sold to an unnamed telephone bidder.

Gorringes auction house had estimated the hair would sell for $4,000 to $6,000.

Lennon gave the book and the lock of hair to Betty Glasow, the Fab Four's hairdresser during their heyday. He wrote in the book, "To Betty, Lots of Love and Hair, John Lennon xx."

"It is astonishing that there is still so much interest in the Beatles and the sale goes to prove that John Lennon is still an icon," said Francesca Collin, a spokeswoman for Gorringes.

"To have some of Lennon's hair along with a signed note from him really does give it fantastic provenance and authenticity," Collin said.

Glasow, who kept the Beatles' moptops trimmed on the set of their films "A Hard Day's Night" and "Help!" in the 1960s, decided to sell the items because she wanted fans to have them, said Nick Muston, a director of the auction house.

"She feels that rather than these things being stuck in a drawer with nobody enjoying them, real enthusiasts (could) get their hands on these things," Muston said.

Other items sold at the auction in Worthing included signed photographs of the band dedicated to Glasow, including one that George Harrison signed "George "Dandruff" Harrison." It sold for $13,000.

I have a pair of John Lennon spectacles which if memory serves me right I stole when I met him at an Autobahn service station when he was living in Hamburg.
I never liked him much so I pinched his specs.
Any offers ?

I'm no biologist, but I'm pretty pretty sure you can't clone from hair unless you've got the follicle. So unless he pulled it out by the roots ...

[sorry, Level -- that was intended to be a general response, not to you specifically]

No problem ; as for pulling it out by the roots, again, thank goodness it wasn't his pubic hair.

Hey if we want to clone him, all you have to do is talk to Yoko.  She always kept his balls in a jar; I am sure she still has them.

Although it was considered totally science fiction at the time the movie "Starman" came out in the 1990's, the chances of cloning someone from DNA devived from hair is actually quite good. The protiens that make up hair actually act as a protectant to the DNA that becomes trapped within it during the strand's growth. Much the same way amber will protect tissues via enzymes.(just no where near as efficiently) Although not quite possible today... it's not outside the realm of the near future.

(I did some research on this for a friend who was writing a story about Al Packer being brought back in much the same way... only using a human hair watch fob that he had been known to make while in prison.)

Ugh. So many reasons this is wrong. Of all people, the late, great, greatly overrated John Lennon?

Good question. Seems to me, Lennon had a politically astute view of the world, and managed to create some noteworthy music in his time.

I wonder whether, if he had just written poetry rather than doing the music too, if the view might be different? although as a poet, not being from London or the southeast and not having been to Oxbridge in those days, I doubt anyone would ever have known his name.

I would venture to say that in general, it's been far easier to become known through music, as opposed to poetry, since the 50's. And this seems to have grown more true with the passing of time... not because the music is improving, but mostly because of our increasing lack of attention to literary work such as poetry.
