Ugh. So many reasons this is wrong. Of all people, the late, great, greatly overrated John Lennon?

In what way overrated?

E

Overrated as in he's not as great a musician as people think. In my opinion, anyway. Others are more than welcome to live and die by him, but I think he's severely overrated.

Not to mention his whole "lying in bed for peace" with Yoko. Yeah, way to really go out and do something to help the world. Lie down in a nice warm, comfortable bed with a tone deaf fuck ugly Asian woman.

I don't think that John's musicianship is what he is known for. His guitar playing was okay, but when you talk about songwriting, passion, singing and pushing the envelope of rock and roll, he is right at the top.
His voice could be so haunting (listen to A Day In The Life) it could send shivers down your spine.
As for his anti- war stuff. It was pretty silly, but just about everyone in rock those days was silly. All you need is love? Not hardly.
And I am as mystified as anyone by what he saw in Yoko, but love is strange sometimes.

To understand how far this pushed the envelope, you would have had to have been alive at that time. It was pretty irreverent and shocking back then. Well ... and he was doing a whole lotta smack too ... so ... I have no further point here. ~chuckle~

OMG! I can't believe this thread. In my opinion, you are showing your age to not acknowledge the iconoclastic, historical, world-changing movement that was the Beatles. Batshalom is right, you had to "be there." To illustrate, try to "imagine" (pun intended, look it up) of one present-day band or any other group that you will be discussing in 40 years.

This really hurts...

How exactly am I not acknowledging the iconoclastic, historical, world-changing movement that was the Beatles? Oh yeah, that's right. I'm not talking about the Beatles. I'm talking about John Lennon.

I will never deny that the Beatles were an amazing, musically talented group. AFTER they went to India, that is. Beforehand, they were poppy crap at their worst. AFTER their trip to India, they evolved and grew by leaps and bounds, and only then earned their reputation.

And for my money, the most iconoclastic, world-changing band? Pink Floyd. Am I still "showing my age?"

Its all a matter of opinion Lazarus, thats for sure - but I do feel you underestimate John by a long way. When I look at his contribution to the Beatles and to his own musical output and his other output, I see an artist; ie one who can express the human condition in meaningful ways - which quality many of his time and since have been unable to do. Interestingly, I would put the output of Pink Floyd into the art classification too.
