yes, they work great...you can buy replacement rubber seals too fro the grolsch type bottles.

If im bottleing mead just for around the house and to give to friends, thats what I use...if its for an SCA event, I hunt down old looking wine bottles at yard sales and stuff and cork them, then seal the top with wax....

Hahaha, SCA type events, just don't bother bottling, just leave in the racked fermentation jar, much easier for passing around a camp fire.Memories of old western movies and passing the moonshine around, tuck it over your shoulder and drink .

But yes, discarded wine and beer bottles are fine, thoroughly washed and sterilised.I have corked beer before, but wired the top on just in case.

I brewed beer for a number of years. you can sterilize with a bleach solution, just make sure you rinse well. Stouts and ales are the easiest. Lagering requires a dedicated refrigerator and takes longer.Also....if you really want to go all out, malt your own barley. Unlike wine and whiskey, beer is best enjoyed fresh. Six weeks in the bottle and you are ready to go.

Actually...that's not a terrible idea......

Seriously, as I said, I'm just a incorrigable do-it-yourselfer. Besides, I'll also admit that I'm barely an intermediate when it comes to beer. I know about the different types, and I have an idea of what I like, but learning to brew would be a chance for me to learn a lot more about a hobby I love.

Though dating a girl who owns a bar would certainly have lots of advantages.............

my favorite beers are Ringnes (norway) Dixie(louisianna) and Guinness(scotland)

And Rausch bier(germany)
I think it is done by smoked hops..

I happen to be a total and uninhibited redneck....if I have my choice, Ill take budlight inthe can.

but lately Daddy is forcing me to branch out and go for some higher class....sam adams hasnt been bad so far, and theres this blue moon stuff I like...but basically if you cant buy it for less than $7 in the grocery store aisle...I dont try it....

I love a nice pint of Whychwood's Hobgoblin and may well be heading for a pint or two of the stuff later tonight.

Or if I really want to be weird, I ask for a brown bitter, something that does perplex landlords and bar staff down here, (a northern taste).

But Stephann, I as a do it yourself fiend, I understand your need to do it yourself and as I said earlier, go for it and may you have many hours of enjoyment in the making and even more so in the quaffing.

No, the only lager i like is san miguel from the bottle purchased in Spain. Buying it over here just ain't the same.
I actually drink nothing that is poured from tap except in my own pub when cider is the exception. I'm a land lady and i know what happens when ales are poorly cared for, and line cleans done incorrectly or not frequent enough.

It has its disadvantages too. Long long hours, always smelling of beer, constantly getting chatted up etc etc.

Just checking but how much does your pub charge for a pint of Lager...because the most expensive l have come across .....wait for it......is £3.90 for a pint of Peroni Italian Lager

I don't sell speciality lagers. Peroni is far better out of the bottle than on tap though in my opinion.
Lager is £2.20 a pint at present.

So, san miguel purchased in spain, not being the same stuff as over here, that I agree, it would seem stuff is altered to the so called 'British taste', which thankfully I have not got.In fact Danish beers are totally different in Danmark, ones that come here taste different, it is not the same.

Cleaning beer pipes, yes I know about that, my local is fanatical about it, small village with four pubs one has to be fanatical, and this pub features in the good pub guide and is a real ale venue.Not once have I had a bad trip on their beer, well not the ale.Did have a reaction to cider though, but I was warned, the cloudy half scrumpy type stuff, very sweet but a killer.

Guinness Ron is Irish, not Scottish, just by way of information. However I do recommend the Scottish Gillespies, and the Irish Beamish. Rausch? Here's a man of good taste...

ya know. Ron..the more I look at this post of yours today...the more I wonder..did you really mean it that way? I mean, the majority of time, your posts are a bit roundabout in getting your point across, but this just seems like a sillier and sillier question everytime I read it. Will they keep the mead in?? uhm. They keep carbonated beer in just fine.....why wouldnt they work for mead? Am I misssing something? Or was your bald head having a blonde moment?
