Level -> NCAA clusterfuck, or why we need a playoff (12/1/2007 11:52:51 PM)

What a mess, a heap o' misery, and a playoff system would go a long way to fixing such a situation.

quote:

Call it BCS Armageddon.
In the perfectly upsetting ending to the Season of the Upset, as many as seven teams head into Sunday at least within argument's range of the national-title game

No. 1 Missouri and No. 2 West Virginia? Sorry, you had your chance. You're out, even though you'll probably still be ranked in the top 10.   No. 3 Ohio State? You're the only one of the major conference champions with only one defeat, so you're in.    That leaves pretty much everybody else in the top 10 worthy of consideration. Let's hear their positions for and against, leading to Sunday's 5 p.m. BCS announcement:

Can you believe this? The folks who run the BCS computer certainly can't.   The last big Saturday of the college football season was pretty much like the rest of them -- nothing went to form.

No. 1 Missouri and No. 2 West Virginia each lost and blew their chances to play for the national title.

That opened the door for Ohio State, the clear No. 3, to play in the BCS championship game Jan. 7 in New Orleans. There are no fewer than six candidates to face the Buckeyes -- including Georgia, LSU, Kansas, Virginia Tech, Southern California and Oklahoma, the 38-17 winner over Missouri in the Big 12 title game. All those teams except Kansas have two losses.

"I'm getting ready to get in the fetal position and crawl under my desk," joked Jerry Palm, the BCS analyst who runs www.collegebcs.com, when reached Saturday night.

Palm thinks LSU is the favorite to take the spot opposite Ohio State in the championship game, though he conceded nothing is for sure.

So would the playoff season have to begin in October to be done by the time the bowl season rolls around? Will adding more games to the season leave the players ANY time to attended classes? College ball has been around a long time without the need for playoffs, the problem now derives from over-scheduling.

They have went from 11 regular-season games to 12 or 13; cut back on that, and have some of the bowl games as part of the playoff system, and you wouldn't really extend the season, except maybe for the title game.

From a thread on the subject last year:

Ah, whatever! Y'all are just mad that my Bucks keep showing why they rule college football!

Lordandmaster -> RE: NCAA clusterfuck, or why we need a playoff (12/2/2007 5:57:38 AM)

Umm, Level, the same reasons I gave last year apply this year as well.  There's not going to be a playoff until the major conferences decide they want it, and I don't see why that would happen anytime soon.  Keep things the way they are, and each major conference is guaranteed a big cash payout in one of the BCS bowls.  Open things up with a playoff system, and some upstart like Boise State just might have an impressive run and shut some of the major-conference teams out of the most lucrative bowl games.  How is that in the interest of the major conferences?

youngsubgeoff -> RE: NCAA clusterfuck, or why we need a playoff (12/2/2007 6:03:17 AM)

Bosie state was a fluke, just like hawaii is this year.

Did you know that Jim Tressel hates death metal? [:D]

youngsubgeoff -> RE: NCAA clusterfuck, or why we need a playoff (12/2/2007 7:18:58 AM)

Doesnt matter to me. Tressel is a true class act, an excellent representative of Ohio State.

Yes, but don't tell anyone, dc. You have a favorite team in all this mish-mash?

dcnovice -> RE: NCAA clusterfuck, or why we need a playoff (12/2/2007 5:54:48 PM)

Well, Notre Dame is the family alma mater (though not mine personally), so I tend to root for them. Rumor has it they're having a rough season.

Yes, the Irish have struggled this year....... they were not even invited to the Tidy Bowl. [X(]

Don't yale and Harvard participate in playoffs when they qualify? The other colleges compete in playoffs, and have for years. Buckeyes!! They sure showed us last year.
