Treating submissives with respect is one of the hallmarks of being a "Dom" in my mind. I treat everyone with respect and view submissive proclivities in seeking my sadism as one small part of the person. If you are with a guy who beats you without understanding the dynamic and giving you the respect, I'd say you weren't with my definition of a Dom. I understand there is nothing inferior about a sub who wants my domination and the pain I can give her. Likewise I would hope she understands my sadism is one part of me and doesn't pigeon hole me as a certain type. Respect all around in our lifestyle is what makes us different in a good way.
