I've voted for Carter, Reagan, Dukakis, Clinton, Clinton, Nader, and Bush for president. A lot of Libertarian ideas appeal to me (as freedom and personal responsibility matter), but I also strongly believe in helping those that honestly need help.

The thought of choosing between Hillary Clinton and Rudy Guiliani makes my bowels twitch.

Level, me too.
If that happened I'd vote Constitution Party again.
Hillary Clinton if nominated wouldn't take the South.
If John Edwards were to be nominated against Guiliani he'd take the South. I'd vote for John Edwards against Guiliani.
A lot of votes in the South.
I don't see any scenario where Hillary would or could win.
There's just too many people who don't like her.
Too many built-in negatives.
And if she does get the nomination it won't be a "close" election  either.
And, I like Ron Paul and Dennis Kuchinich too.
I'd vote for either of them if they got the nomination.
To be honest I think we're going to see a Hillary/ Romney matchup.
And Governors trump Senators every time.
Romney is squeeky clean and Hillary is covered in dirt.
It'll be a "Good vs Evil" contest.

bipolarber -> RE: Republican? Democrat? Why? (11/17/2007 12:24:23 PM)

I'm Democratic.

Simply because after 40 years of this crap, I can't possibly hold my head up with any kind of pride if I were to stand with the likes of Nixon, October surprises, swift boaters, Bush 1, Ollie North, Rove, torturers, people who rape the Constitution, insider traders, the S&L scandal (Neil Bush, who never spent a day in jail for the 1.7 billion he ripped off) Enron, Halliburton, Senator Craig in a men's room, the other GOP senator (who's name escapes me for the moment) who was busy bending over his under age pages, the whole Iraq fuckup, the ignoring of the 9/11 warning memos, the tax cuts for the super rich while the rest of us get the shaft, and of course, Limbaugh, O'Rilley, Coulter, Hannity and the rest of the media Spanish Inquisition. And that's just scratching the surface!

Sorry, but after all this time, watching the GOP more often than not, being rotten, conniving assholes, who have pushed this country to the breaking point.... I say fuck the GOP and all it stands for.

I am, and always have been a registered independent (in Az that indicates no party affiliation)

Although My voting record differs, I have the same sort of idealogy.  I guess the difference is that I do not believe that the we should blithely permit the government to tax us to death and then make the decisions regarding who honestly needs help.  They have proven to Me over and over that those who truly need assistance and a hand up (as opposed to a hand out) often slip through the cracks and those that know how to work the system are spending My hard earned dollars.  How many times have you been called by private charities and helped, in addition to your tax dollars when the need arose?  I still believe that Americans are some of the most generous people in the world, and, as evidenced by the "Hunger" thread, people have to work at it to starve in this country.

A good very description of how that thought made Me feel also.  In fact, when I first had  to face the very idea, I was thinking Clinton/McCain...and he is from My own state!  *Smile*  I made it go away when I decided, with confidence, that I would not vote for either of them.
I will write My candidate in.

Somebody said: republicans are bad but democrats are wrong. So, the only choice a sane person is left is to vote independent.

I’d say rather than throw your vote away… why not run for public office yourself.
Rather then complain, exercise the rights our forefathers died for and stop complaining and start campaigning… this to all of us on the board not you in particular awmslave.
I would but it would only take a young cub of a reporter from the Post Dispatch about an hour to find out my lifestyle…Now be truthful… if the general public got all huffy about Clinton playing erotically with a cigar imagine what they would think about us.

DomMeinCT -> RE: Republican? Democrat? Why? (11/17/2007 10:08:22 PM)

I'm registered in one of the parties, but only because I like to exercise my right to vote as often as possible by also voting in primaries.

Rarely does my voting end up straight party ticket; it's the person, not the party.

The practice that only US Republicans and Democrats own political process shows strict limitation to US democracy. A proper classification perhaps would be "manipulated democracy". An independent candidate at this time would have reasonable traction because the the democrat candidate pool is rather weak  disconnected from reality and republicans are not popular because the country is in bad shape under current republican president.

laurell3 -> RE: Republican? Democrat? Why? (11/18/2007 3:09:58 AM)

I'm a registered Democrat (one of I believe a whole 5 in the state of Nebraska), although I never vote on political lines but for who I believe is most qualified.  I don't honestly remember whom I voted for the national elections often, I am much more focused on local elections the majority of the time because it effects my everday work life more.

RealityLicks -> RE: Republican? Democrat? Why? (11/18/2007 3:24:59 AM)

One of the most baffling things about American politcs to an outsider is the way you set up the leadership. On the face of it, you have an extremely democratic system, with elections for even fairly minor officials taking place frequently and so on. (For example, your police chiefs have to satisfy the electorate - here, they simply apply for the job as ordinary candidates and we don't have a say).

Despite offering this empowerment at local level, you make the huge mistake at the top of embodying the head of state and head of government in one person; the president. It would be healthier to separate the triumphalism of a newly elected head of state from the sense of purpose and service required from a head of government. You can't expect the titular head of the entire country to be anything other than a phony if they hold partisan views.

Add to that that America is the world leader in the process of dumbing down and you have a recipe for trouble. Taken as a whole, the American people seem remarkably ill-informed. Decades of sub-standard media coverage of political issues and a sound-bite culture doesn't help but your media are strangely deferential to politicians. At a presidential press conference, they all stand when he enters the room! In Britain, a journalist who did that would never be trusted or respected by anyone. Yes, you'd stand for the Queen, bless the old dear - but never for the PM.

Similarly, its impossible to ask a politician a tough question on live TV. Media all has to be stage-managed in advance and carried out in the utmost politeness and restraint, even as you march jingoistically to war. How can you stand it?

Save some time and energy...you don't have to look all the way down in the States for a monkey circus...you have a very good one going on in your own back yard... [image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m9.gif[/image]....ALL open societies political workings look like a circus.

djoker -> RE: Republican? Democrat? Why? (11/20/2007 10:52:10 AM)

i dont consider myself loyal to any party. i am not going to their line. they have to toe my line. in other words if they are idologically close to me then i will vote that party. I am a liberal. and I want justice and liberty for all. since most of the times Republicans are against those values these days so i do not much support them either.

gorgeous1 -> RE: Republican? Democrat? Why? (11/20/2007 11:02:36 AM)

I've never voted for a Democrat, but not because I'm a registered Republican (ANGRY Republican these days). I always check out a candidate's stand on issues I care about, and if we're a match, I vote for them. If a Dem came out with a platform I agreed with I wouldn't hesitate to support them.

With that said, I WILL NOT be voting for Juliani if he's the front runner. I disagree with a few very serious issues, and I won't vote for crap and pretend it's great because it's a Republican.

GO DUNCAN HUNTER!!!!!!

sophia37 -> RE: Republican? Democrat? Why? (11/20/2007 11:14:45 AM)

I think this thread has it about covered. I am a registared Democrat yet have crossed party lines when I thought the best person was whatever party the best person was.

I also do what one poster mentioned. If I dont know the people, I'll vote for the Democrats. Why? In general I think the Deomocrats speak a few more words for what I believe. But yes, like another poster said, their pretty mcuh all alike. Which makes it harder to vote party quite frankly.

The other way to go is to make a statement about how bad it all is by NOT voting. What with how many people DON'T vote these days, I think thats what the silence is saying. But those who get elected dont notice the sparce turnouts I guess. So in a way even that stratgey doesnt work. I dont know. The whole thing has become a popularity contest. I just tune out until the home stretch anymore. I pick from the left standings.

cyberdude611 -> RE: Republican? Democrat? Why? (11/20/2007 1:39:44 PM)

Candidates dont care how many turned out, they just care if they won. If you dont vote, you dont get a voice at all nor do you have any right to complain about anything.

Party lines have always blown me away.  I do not understand why people latch on to one party or the other.  Does that mean the other party never has anything good to contribute?

Oh and gawd help us if anyone dares to critisize someones sacred party for wrong doing its almost like someone pissed in their cheerios.

What amazes me Is that I have seen democrats steal republican issues and republicans steal democrats issues and yet party hangers stick with their parties.

I think that I have been pretty clear in my views that I cant really tell them apart but thats me, how about you all?

Do you choose one and for the most part stick to that party and why?    Do you also vote party line or switch hit?

Maybe it's just me but...I actually vote for the person I feel is most likely to contribute best to the country...regardless of my personal interests.
