What percentage of society is into some level of BDSM? I have no idea, but I dont think its that common. Like 5% maybe.

What I really wonder is how people find people into BDSM in the vanilla world. This pretty much never happens for me unless someone else is volunteering information about their kink. I have no idea how to figure out who is kinky and not through any regular interactions. But Im told it is possible.

Why would you want to? Unless someone volunteers that information up, it's not a good thing to bring it out in the open with them.

To find people in the vanilla world, you'll have to open up and possibly "out" yourself.
Are you willing to face losing friends and facing people's bad reactions?

If you don't mind taking chances and educating people, or if you are that secure in your own world where it doesn't really matter, then it shouldn't be a problem.

To me it seems easier if you join groups or go where "kinksters" gather.  The internet is a wonderful tool to track down the "locals"

Good luck

It's going to depend on what you define as "some level of BDSM." If that's no more than liking to give/take an occasional light swat on the butt during sex, then it's probably half the population. Those, however, usually don't think of themselves as BDSM practitioners. If you limit the definition to those who admit, at least to themselves, that they like something kinky and use some type of what we would call BDSM equipment, then 5-10 percent is a good guess.

And you're not going to be able to tell who's who unless you get to know the person really well and they decide to talk about it.

you don't know the secret hand shake? you must not be twue....but actually there is a decoder ring you get with the newbie kinkster package...didn't you get yours?

and yep...theres a man i know that everyone would be shocked as hell to find out he was kinky....and then they would go, well he's a top right....nope, full out bottom...

to the OP...try developing your conversation skills...if your posts on these boards are anything to go by, they need work...thats how i, and everyone else i know finds out a person is kinky or not....through conversation....

I would say that the vast majority of society is kinky in some way.  Almost everyone has a fetish or two.  Most vanillas do something kinky, whether it be talking dirty to one another, some fantasy role play, maybe even tying a  partner up with or light spanking... something.  I'm sure there's some Masters & Johnson (maybe Johnson & Johnson) study out there with some percentages associated with it.

But there's a difference between having some kinks and fetishes, and self-identifying as a Top or bottom, or Dominant or submissive.  And how we find one another is through websites like this, or the many real time opportunities in which we gather (munches, workshops, events, demonstrations, etc.).  Beyond that, there's no "scarlet BDSM".

Meh, I make no bones about my sex life.  When I get into a conversation with someone, and it turns to a sexier nature, I'll tease them about certain aspects that the more vanilla-inclined will laugh at at the very least ("whips and chains", spanking, etc).  You'd be surprised how many people are interested in the darker arts, but don't think any one else would actually like it.  I'm sure more than 5% of the population is into some form of kink.

All you have to do is look at how the film and TV industries are working more and more BDSM/torture scenes into movies. Hell, some are torture-based (e.g, the Saw and Hostel series). There's even a V-chip commercial where the family tells whip-wielding "Mistress Mandy" that they'll have to block her.

When mainstream entertainment starts playing with BDSM themes, it's gotta be a lot more than 5 percent.

Yes, exactly.  If you ask "What percent of women like to have their hair pulled at least sometimes?" the answer is going to be damn near 100%.

I don't talk about it to embarrass anyone, but I don't shy away from it either. I've had women ask me about it. I respond truthfully and tell them as much as they deserve to know. I don't admit anything about any of my partners or go into details. What goes on between a lady and myself is between us. If its a case of discussing my likes, well, a lot of my friends think I am very kinky (they would probably be surprised).
I work with a lot of nurses (what a kinky bunch themselves) and at times the conversations can get quite interesting (not at work but out for drinks). I think a lot more people think about it than will admit it.

i can relate my own experiences; i'm 'out' to my vanilla girlfriends, and no one else.  Mah gfs are fascinated and never offer any example of the possibility of kink in their lives, but i know them; they engage in very similar behavior and just avoid the labels.

What?  My secret handshake method of finding Doms and subs is wrong?  Damn, maybe that's the problem!

I also think its a lot higher than most would imagine.  Im new to this, and when it comes up im not embarrased at all to tell them what I like.  The problem is most folk, especially vanillas (who havent indulged their darker side for whatever reason) hear "bdsm" or "s&m" and automatically think of a dominatrix with a whip or the guy from pulp fiction with the gimp mask on.  Me? I like bondage...mmmm.....bondage... and rope...i digress. When I tell folk about it all starry eyed they look at me like Ive just grown a third eye and say " i dont know about that...I mean ill tie her/him or like to be tied up...." and viola, without even knowing it, they have just told me they into it, albeit slightly. could go with anything.  No one on this earth doesnt have a fetish, and while some may seem different or strange to others, it still evokes the same attraction and emotion, whether its feet or humiliation.  There. I got my first post out of the way.
