SANTIAGO, Chile - The king of Spain told Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to "shut up" Saturday during a heated exchange at a summit of leaders from Latin America, Spain and Portugal.

Apparently Chavez is a bit of a hot head.  O, those nutty politcians.

Who told Y/you to shut up last?

Hugo Chavez is a complete nutcase asshole and an enemy of the United States. He needs to be shut up permanently for the sake of all of s south and central America.
Also, the King of Spain certainly does have the spiritual, moral, and temporal authority to shut up that asshole president Chavez by the "Divine Right of Kings".

It's good to be King.  And Chavez is a loud-mouthed, rude, asshole.

As for when the last time someone told me to shut up-- well. it's been so long that I can't remember.  That's not a term I hear directed toward me very often at all.

FUCK KINGS. The "Divine Right to Rule" is the biggest fucking scam ever.

Anyone who buys into that shit, deserves what they get.

Not even King George had a divine right, the monarchy was just an institution that fitted into the overall constitution of the country, parliament had the real power in Britain back then and still does. The same with modern Spain, the Spanish Parliament holds the real power, the monarchy as an institution just prevents the accumulation of too much power in the hands of ambitious politicians. The US President has far more power than any European monarchy (which vertually have none) and Americans are far more defferential to their President than Europeans are to their monarchs.

Yes but nobody's seriously claimed it for several hundred years, especially not in Spain, where the monarchy was only restored in 1975 and the king is subservient to the constitution.

I can't reconcile a "Royal Family" with the principle of "All People are created Equal"

Ya know... As much as I hate to admit it and as much as I agree with Juan Carlos on this issue, Farglebargle is right. While the "Divine" Right of Kings went out the window a long time ago, the "Birth" Right of Kings is alive and kicking!

I think you could get a poll of Her Majesty's SUBJECTS on the elevation of Charles to King and find well over 70% oppose or think him undeserving. Yet.... He will be King because he was "BORN" to be king.

Something very very wrong in that...wot?

Kings were originally elected in north European tribes, it was the Christian Church that gave them the divine right so the power of the church was institutionalised. Democratic monarchs go back well into the first century BC and probably way before that, maybe even before the Roman Republic. It is not for nothing, modern democracy evolved in north Europe.

Actually Canute who has been served badly by history tried to make the tide turn to prove he couldn't and that he was just an ordinary man.

American Presidents are vetted by primary voting, by the national media and then elected state by state Who's people vote for electors to the Electoral College. The person with the most Electorial votes (though not always the most popular votes) becomes President. They are not born and there is plenty of chance to oppose and even usurp one's opponent as in the Election of 1992 in which Bill Clinton defeted George Bush.

AND...

No more than eight years after they are sworn in, they lose EVERY SHRED of power they once held.  There are no "for life" Presidents.

Look at the background of American Presidents, very few come from outside the establishment which pays for them. Europe's had more low birth Kings than America has had low birth Presidents. But monarchs don't have power, as an individual they are irrelevent, it is the institution that is important. The real power is with Parliaments and if you look at the Prime Ministers in European countries, far more are from low birth that US Presidents are because they do not need all the money US Presidents need to get elected.

The problem is the one with the most votes is usually the one with the most money and where did they get the money? Yep, you got it, they sold promises of favours.

On the other hand, a president, who may have the minority of the popular vote, can and does veto legislation designed by a legislature that has the majority of the popular vote.  On the gripping hand, most European monarchs are nothing more than titular heads of state.  Sure, Queen Elizabeth can, in theory, veto parliamentary legislation but never will do because, if she did, the UK would be a republic before she could say, ``So what are you going to call this country, anyway, now that it isn't a kingdom any more?''  (The situation there is analogous to the fact that, in most states in the US, the members of the electoral college are not legally obliged to use their vote in accordance with the popular vote.  They don't have to follow the popular vote but they do because, if they didn't, the system would get booted out from under them.)

My criticism is more, "It's so rigged and pre-determined it makes Pro-Wrasslin look honest by comparison, and the mechanics of it are only as legitimate and functional as necessary to forestall a revolution". Witness the way, in some locations, exit polls just didn't track the reported results... Of course, not in Nevada, where the Gaming Board is well aware how to keep things honest... In Nevada, exit polls were dead on... ( And everywhere else without the DRE electronic machines... )
