Woodland Hills-based Health Net Inc. avoided paying $35.5 million in medical expenses by rescinding about 1,600 policies between 2000 and 2006. During that period, it paid its senior analyst in charge of cancellations more than $20,000 in bonuses based in part on her meeting or exceeding annual targets for revoking policies, documents disclosed Thursday showed

Why is anyone surprised?

The goal of a private health insurance company is to make money--not to provide health insurance.

farglebargle -> RE: Health insurer tied bonuses to dropping sick policyholders (11/10/2007 5:47:55 AM)

I think you have just identified what's wrong with the useless middle layer of health-insurers standing between the consumer and the provider.

kdsub -> RE: Health insurer tied bonuses to dropping sick policyholders (11/10/2007 10:33:24 AM)

What a mess our system...I have no answers but I think it is time we looked at a national health care program…if nothing else then catastrophic insurance at the least.

And I would rather take my chances with a government bureaucracy then some damn national insurance administered by private insurers. Our damn prescription drug  program is a disgrace.

This is only one of the things that's wrong with a "for profit" healthcare system.
Some people say they don't want "socialised healthcare" but, we have "Socialised Fire Protection", "Socialised Police Protection", and "Socialised Education".
I say lets give it a try.
On another note, that broad "saved" the insurance company $35M and she only got $20k for it???
She's not very bright is she!

How many of your examples are nationalized socialized?

None.

Look at any nationalized programs we have, and tell me, how many of them are run well

Owner59 -> RE: Health insurer tied bonuses to dropping sick policyholders (11/10/2007 12:06:01 PM)

Is your "nationalized" local firehouse, "for profit",or not?

And your ambulance squad?

Well, if we're paying for it with our Taxdollars it really isn't "socialised" is it?
The U.S. Coast Guard is run pretty well I'd say.
And the military in general.
They're just being used for the wrong purposes.
The State Dept we could cut by 2/3's.
Energy, Education, EPA- Gone!

[sarcasm]

No, firemen and paramedics work for free

[/sarcasm]

Take away the pay incentive for physicians, then wait twenty years  and see what happens

Better yet just go to Canada to see your Nationalization experiment fast forwarded - no need to completely ruin our system for further proof that your idea is a disaster

Nobody ever complains about military fuck-ups?

Never?

Especially Liberals, right? Liberals never complain about how our nationalized socialist programs perform???

And they all perform perfectly too?

Exactly. People are always so worried about taxes. The American people are going to be taxed regardless. I would rather my tax dollars be spent on healthcare than the war in Iraq. I'm not talking about an increase in taxes, I refer to the distribution of taxes Americans already pay.

WTF? How about come to Canada and see how average people can get excellent helathcare and lifesaving surgeries without having to sell their houses, mortgage their children or go bankrupt, all for about $70. a month per person (or less if you are poor). But don't let experience or facts interfere with whatever nonsense you wish to spew. Just don't expect Canadians to take your slander laying down.

The only reqason I am alive to yank your chain is thanks to a rational, humane and (gasp) tax funded medical system (which is staffed with many happy and well compensated doctors, BTW).

Doesn't that make you feel better about the whole thing?

Z.

Bold emphasis Mine...
Do you honeslty beleive there is a snowball's chance in hell of that ever happening?

The operative word here is "non-profit".Firemen,police ,EMT`s(that aren`t volunteers),get paid.Those entities don`t make a "profit", though.

Working for non-profit outfits ,doesn`t mean working for free.

Are you confusing the terms on purpose to be cute,or is it sincere?

Claiming Canada`s healthcare system is a disaster,is dis-honest,and intellectually lazy.It`s simply not true.Only Limbots(Rush Limbaugh listeners)believe those stories.
One of the Limbot myths,is that we have the best health care system in the world. That is also, not true. However, the Limbot is so frightened by the "scawy, scawy stories",that having an open mind about this, is impossible.

The awful truth is,that even the sanitys of the world, can get tossed off their policies, and dumped into the "go to the ER" pool of patients.Still, they vote against their own interests. It`s ironic.

Could anyone imagine what those services would be like,if there was a "profit motive" involved?!  lol

You would have to listen to Rush Limbaugh more than anyone in order to have memorized everything he says this way. It seems like half of your posts are dedicated to what you claim that man says.

Are you really that big a fan of his? Careful, there's a Limbot under your bed... they're everywhere! LOL!

I think this happens with car and house insurance as well. File a big claim and youre apt to lose your policy.

We used to have  government consumer-protection agencies, that protected us from this.

Now, those agencies are headed by former insurance company CEOs,CFOs,and former lobbyists for the insurance industry. No wonder they`re getting away with murder.

This is an real world example of what Regan called, "getting government off the backs of the people".
Which is code for ,no regulation or rule enforcement, on businesses.

Of course, the middle class gets fucked in the process. But that`s the beauty of the swindle.People think less government regulation is a good thing.Good for business, yes, but not for people.

You've made a good point, even if you don't realize it.

Every time you create a new federal program, it immediately becomes a political football... and politicians use it both ways yo try to buy the votes of the gullible.

"Vote for X for free food, housing, health care and daycare."

vs.

"Vote for Y for lower taxes - spend your money the way you see fit."

that will work for 2 weeks :)

problem is that no one gets to the root of the problem, and those who do are blown off because there is no way they could accomplish that anyway.

Great circular reasonaing to keep the country (status quo) nice and cozy just as it is.
