Good! There are some things you just don't do...Crashing a funeral is one thing, but disrupting it and saying he DESERVED to die and what-not is just WRONG on a variety of levels...
Even if he is queer, the fact that he had the courage to face America's enemies and the picketers didn't speaks VOLUMES!
I think it would be more fitting, though, to send the picketers into Iraq and let them try the Hand of Friendship with the terrorists...After all, they believe America "deserves" to be invaded for our over-tolerance?
HOWEVER, since they're ALLEGEDLY American, they'd be slaughtered as "infidels"...
Ironic punishment is the ULTIMATE justice, don't you think?

They may believe they have a legitimate message but what they do is just plain WRONG

Too bad this will be tied up in appeals for the next 10 years or so. Although the lawyers for the plaintiff fell down badly on researching these yahoos. This outfit owns a couple of blocks in Wichita around their church in some sort of shady communal arrangement. The lawsuit should have named everybody involved not just Phelps and 2 of his daughters.

Here was what I wrote mere seconds after being told of the verdict ...

Dear Sweet Heaven ... there IS a god!

The only thing that would have been better is reading that Phelps suffered a crippling stroke DURING one of his protests.

A stroke so intense that it paralyzes his chest ... so he slowly slowly suffocates ... completely conscious, completely aware, completely without hope of being saved.

Phelps is one of the people that are quite literally alive ONLY because killing him would make him a martyr to that backwoods inbred "church" of his.

Seriously, when he was in Traverse City a few years ago, the ONLY thing that kept me from attacking that fuck and smashing my fists into his skull until it was hard to distinguish where the ground ended and his grey matter began was because of that. I was able to remind myself he'd be martyred.

I want him dead. Dear heavens, do I want him dead. But I want him dead in a way that actually looks like he's been struck down by the Finger of God.

I want it to appear that the Creator herself reached down and fucking erased him from the universe. I want it to appear that the Universe could no longer tolerate his presence anymore.

And I want it to happen in full view of a majority of his flock.

I should say, how distressed I am to hear this terrible news...... if I didnt think it was exactly the sort of come-uppance this arrogant and vile man deserved.

Interestingly, his view seems to be that things are going down the drain because the US is becoming more friendly towards gay and lesbian relationships. Now that his fortunes are going down the shitter, would he perhaps consider that God has a gripe with him I wonder?

Though more likely he'll say its a trial from God or most likely the revenge of the US which dislikes him and he must continue his "mission".

He offends us...and gets media coverage...because of this funeral protest policy. But, that aside, he is at least true to every word of the book that all Christians are supposed to follow.

It was written 2,000-4,000 years ago (New Testament, Old Testament). Much of it made sense for those people in those times. It advocates death for things that are commonly accepted now. It advocates genocide, slavery and much that is now reviled.

There was pretty much one penalty for every infraction: stoning. Abominations were infractions. Have you ever eaten shrimp or lobster? Sorry, but that's abomination.

But it's still the "Holy Book" of hundreds of millions of people. They reinterpret it, or ignore inconvenient chunks. It's become The Big Book of Multiple Choice. Choose the morality that makes sense for you, then look in the Bible for the parts that back it up (or that you can fudge to do so). Ignore the rest. Let your minister/pastor/priest tell you the parts to look at, what they mean and what they say you should do.

Yes, he's a vicious, evil, nasty man. Yes, he deserves to die for the venom he spews.

But he's a "true Christian". And if there is a god, She loves him to bits. Cuz HE's practising Her words. All of 'em. Not necessarily in the funeral protests (that's showboating for attention and gain), but in the rest of his doctrine.

Whats great about this is it sets precedence for ALL the other soldiers families to file suit against the church now. Them bastards wont have the money for centuries to fly anywhere to protest!

I listened to a phone interview on CNN with Phelps, what a scary and irrational man. Unfortunately I do not think this is going to close his 'church'.He screamed about how everyone is against the word of God and him, from the armed forces down to the interviewer who was unable to get a single question out.He saw nothing disrespectful about 'speaking the word at a distance' at a funeral, that the father was also trying to shut him down.Honestly he came across like a total nutcase... but he still has his followers.

Afraid that wont do: in Deuteronomy (sp?) I think, everything that a "loving" God will visit on his flock if they choose not follow the righteous path is listed.
Includes things like the Pox, Plagues and unpleasent Death on a large scale. That is what the Phelps preach and that is why inteviewers find them so difficult to deal with.

I say again I find that message obnoxious.
Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Religious belief may come down to this.Liberals are confounded I should think.
Dont they implicitly believe that people will behave well if their freedom is maximised ?

... i thought the new testament over-rode the old testament, you know the bit where Christ comes along and says that Moses law doesn't apply. There's not much, if anything, in the New Testament about homosexuality. So, these so called Christians who bang on about homosexuality are actually ignoring the word of Christ....ironic, eh?

I remember hearing about a black lady who sued the Klan (for killing her son) and won. She ended up with the deed to their headquarters. She then gave the building to the NAACP. I would love to see something similar happen here. Let their "church" become the new headquarters for the local PFLAG or Gay and Lesbian Alliance.

I don't believe in a literal Hell (I refuse to believe that God is a sadistic prick) but if there is any justice in the afterlife, then Phelps (there is nothing Reverend about him) will be sentenced to spend eternity as the janitor in Heavan's gay bathouse.
