I don't believe in a literal Hell (I refuse to believe that God is a sadistic prick) but if there is any justice in the afterlife, then Phelps (there is nothing Reverend about him) will be sentenced to spend eternity as the janitor in Heavan's gay bathouse.

Rarely if ever can I agree with something you post Marc - but this one? Definitely!

Yeah, read about this on the MSNBC site too. Yes, they'll appeal, and I doubt if it will be overturned. However, the appeals process will probably adjust the damages to something around a couple million, which will still wipe them out, and the family of the deceased will be able to take their homes, cars, businesses...

The other interesting thing about this is, that it has started talk in federal circles about drafting a law that makes it illegal to protest or otherwise intentionally disrupt a funeral. Not sure if they can write that one in a way that won't be breaking the 1st amendment, but it'll be interesting. Perhaps they can change the "free speech zone" or "bubble" restrictions to apply to cemetaries....

The only way to deal with this problem is for the main stream media to agree not to give them what the clearly are searching for.....publicity.

If they believe the US is going to hell then there exist many other ways that they could make that point.

SeeksFemSlave: re your "sorry, folks, but what he says is in the Bible"...yep.  Pretty sure it's in Leviticus.
re your later point about the media, that's a great idea.  Constitution guarantees free speech; doesn't guarantee anyone'll publish your words or promote your agenda.  But yes, hate sells.  And expecting cohesion by the media (worried about being scooped by other outlets) is too much to expect.  Actually, that's a good thing.  If they DID all say "let's agree not to cover this...and that...and...", now THAT would be scary.

Of course, some folks figure they've already been doing just that for years.

As objectionable as we all find his practices (yes, me too), several points of interest:

1. It's quite likely the decision will be overturned on appeal.  And that, rather than having to pay anything, the nasty man and his nasty church will be awarded "costs".  Being a bunch of lawyers, they weren't out of pocket for legal fees...but they would then be able to bill for their time.  AND they'll be interviewed all over the place & will crow about it (so, as they have in the past, they'll profit both financially and PR-wise as a result of what they've baited people into doing).

2. Phelps wasn't always this awful.  Apparently, back in the day, he was almost single-handedly responsible for getting Jim Crow laws repealed in his state.  I don't have specifics on that, but got it from some very well informed atheists who were basically "giving the Devil his due" (just an expression; they don't believe in the Devil either).

3. What he's doing IS reprehensible.  But the first ammendment doesn't say: "...as long as it's not objectionable".  There's a good quote that goes something like this.  "I disagree strongly with what you say...but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."

A crazy homeles guy can wear a foil hat and rant at the top of his lungs how he's Napoleon's clone and the furry aliens will arrive soon to make him King of the World.  He has the right to say it.  We have the right to ignore him.  The media has the right not to offer him a platform.

Actually he is NOT true to every word of Bible.  He totally forgets the multitudes of places the Bible calls on people to love one another.   "Love thy neighbors as thyself" and at one point "the greatest of these is love one another.."

Now as a Christian that means that although I abhor what Phelps does and the harm he causes others I am to love him.   It also means that as he abhors gays he is to love them.  We are to hate the sin and love the sinner.

What an interesting place this world would be if we could manage to love others no matter what they are doing at the time.   The daily news might have to resort to reporting good things people have done.

He offends us...and gets media coverage...because of this funeral protest policy. But, that aside, he is at least true to every word of the book that all Christians are supposed to follow.

Actually it is us who makes the choice of where we go when we die according to the Judeo/Christian view.  If one chooses to live their life without God one is also making the choice to live without him in the afterlife.
