To the OP: I came across this quote awhile back and for the most part it is true for me as well.. Although i realise not for everyone. I think part of the reason it works that way for me is that i was introduced to BDSM by a sadist who only truly enjoyed it when he took me past the point of erotic pain to pain-pain and never provided aftercare. When i expressed to him my need for physical affection after the intensity of the pain-play and he didn't provide it eventually i decided to walk away. It left me feeling very torn. One the one hand i knew i would never be truly satisfied with plain old vanilla sex again and yet i wasn't ok with how it made me feel afterwards. I am thankful for the kind D-types i met later in chatrooms online who explained aftercare, the importance of educating myself and becoming involved in the local community. Without them i doubt i would have ever continued my jouney into all this .

Iv'e had ones rush out the door-and almost get into car wrecks on the freeway-they were still so stoned on endorphins. Pissed me off-them taking chances like that. Pissed me off AT me that I allowed it.

In response to the OP: I think that's a perfectly valid point of view... but only on the lighter end of the S&M spectrum. Also valid are the folks who play specifically to surf a tsunami of pain, and whom I've seen come down off a cross black and blue, and bleeding from lacerations... and, I might add, smiling from ear to ear! That's the other end of the spectrum. As you can imagine, there's room for a whole lot of "in-betweeners." There are people into kink just for the feeling of "belonging" to someone else. Some are into service. Others like the restriction of bondage, like a big hug that never lets up. And yes, there are plenty who are into the intense sensations of pain and punishment too. We are legion, we contain multitudes.

I much prefer to have a mental and emotional connection with anyone I play with. I like to listen...listen...listen and learn where their triggers are, where their fears lie and, most important for the mental aspects of sadism that I like to bring into play, what terrifies and yet excites them at the same time. Knowing that she cares about you and thinks you are sweet is great and really helps when you shove her over a truck seat, yank her dress up and begin to beat her ass (knowing that she loves having her ass beat) while all the while reminding her just "how sweet you are" is better because of that connection. But does it have to be love? No. Can that mental and emotional connecton that IS there help to make love begin with a good beating...and/or begging to cum while you keep saying "mmmmmmm...not just yet...but soon...I PROMMMMMMMMMISE, ~grins~"...along with a host of other things (before someone jumps me about love coming from a beating alone)? I believe it can.
