It is all semantics and context. You can be a passive person and an assertive submissive. Or an assertive person and a passive submissive, etc. etc.

It is not a synonym; when I read that in the other thread, I rolled my eyes. When will people learn to think in shades of grey instead of black and white?

yes it is, when you look up "submissive" in the thesaurus, one of the options it gives you is "passive"....the problem is that this lifestyle, by definition, does not use defintions given by the currently published dictionaries to define all the words we use...

Ok, I will grant you that, if we are going by dictionary definitions, but again, refer back to the shades of grey part; I am submissive but one could never call me passive. I also get tired of labels.

I don't know. Let's just say I'm not waiting up nights.

Neither am I. It was a rhetorical question.

I viewed what TheChauvanist said as a poor attempt at being 'cheeky.'

Ultimately resulting in a tirade on why being passive was such a negative trait.

I agree that being submissive does not mean being passive. Nor should it.  I just happen to be a passive person who is also submissive.

In my opinion, this is a dead fuck.  But i've been labeled worse.

Passive and submissive can have the same meaning, if you take them both as adjectives. But, 'a' submissive, meaning the noun, doesn't not have to have a passive, the adjective, personality.

Go with how you want to define it and simply say that you don't agree with them.

Well, I was going to cut and paste my comment, but someone already did that.

Easily offended? Oh how could I possible be so since according to your defintion I am completely passive.

At least you can mail ME to a profile.

There's nothing moe passive than someone who hides.
Ah, now it becomes a little more clear. So you're upset at my humor and use this as your passive-aggessive way of retaliating at me since you can not delude my email with your pissy emails. All this just because I corrected something you said in humor. Quite sad, really.

Historically passivity is bending to anothers will or an outside source, and submission is bending to anothers will of your own choice.  A little wordy I know, but ... truly anyone can be passive or aggressive, it matters not if you are Dom/me or sub.  I think the passive and submissive are together simply because there is a lack of clear understanding both in the definition of the words and in some people's understanding of the roles.

For me, neither passivity or submissiveness is required to affect submission.  Passivity or submissiveness are both personality traits not relationship roles.

**blinks**

Actually, had a discussion on this very topic with my Master the other day. Having become His property very recently and still trying to learn His expectations, i was asking what level of initiative He wanted -- did He want me to be reactive or pro-active in my role?

His answer was that a good slave not only obeys but actively tries to anticipate what is desired, uses her judgement to obey before she is told basically, and will often do what she is not asked or ordered to do when she knows it will be pleasing. That is not passive, by any definition.

The word 'passive' is not a good tool to use in describing a submissive/slave role. Like using a screwdriver to pound in a nail, it can work but isn't the proper one for the job. Let us use pro-active and re-active to describe instead.

I suppose it's possible people might seek a submissive that has passive tendencies, but to say submissive = passive is not true, unless as chelle pointed out you are referring to the word submissive as opposed to the role.  A submissive as a person can be or not be passive, as can Dominant.  For me personally, there's nothing even remotely passive about my submission and as I'm sure you all can tell by now, I'm far from a passive person .

Nope, they are not the same thing. I learned that the hard way. I grew up learning to be very passive and also through my marriage. When I entered the world of D/s I thought that meant I was submissive. I confused a lot of people and myself.

Hell, now I'm confused.  Toss me the dictionary. LOL!  Seriously tho, passive-aggressiveness is not a good way to deal with things.  Don't hide.  As mentioned by the OP - Come out and play.

If I'm being passive-aggressive I expect someone to bop me on the head and tell me to get it right.

Someone just categorically posted in response to me that passive and submissive have the same meaning.

I don't consider I am being passive when I am being submissive.

What do subs here feel about this? Do the dom(me)s here think they want passivity or submission?

If you feel there is a difference then what is the diference between passivity and submission? I know the difference for me but I am, well, quite spechless at The Chauvanist's original resonse.

taken literally or from the dictionary  they are synonyms..

I am not passive in personality
I am not submissive ( dictionary definition) in personality

however;
I am my Masters submissive
I am "a or his submissive"   my role/position in the dynamic of my relationship with him..

to me that is the difference.   role  not  personality trait.

As I said to the OP in the other thread, why does my not having a profile bother you? My reasoning for not having a profile up is my own and none of your or the OP's business. I certainly won't post it just because a couple of women don't like the fact that they can't deluge my email. Consider this your bop on the head.
