I'm sure there has been another thread similar to this one, but I'm wondering about the proper sanitation procedures to go through when practising fetish play that involves things such as needles and blades.

I suppose iodine and other things should be used. I'm wondering if it would be wise to invest in an autoclave at somepoint if play becomes frequent. Any links to websites or personal tips would be much appreciated.

Not a bad idea to get an autoclave if you are going to use blades more than once. Generally speaking though needle play is done with single use hub needles and they are disposed of afterwards in a sharps container. When doing cuttings most folks I know use scaples that are also disposable. The only thing needing sterilization afterwards in my kit is a stainless steel scaple handle. With that item I could see the potential for needing an autoclave. However since I generally don't do cuttings that often and as yet only wit one person washing and air drying for 30 days would seem sufficient. If I get to the point where I want to do it more often then maybe I'll invest in one.

Ditto on what Archer said. 

Single use, diposable pre-sterilizied items are easy to get and use. 

Those items like scalpel handles can be bought rather cheaply and local piercing/tattooing shops will often autoclave a handful of items for a nominal fee of $5-10.  Some local medical facilities do this also if you look around.  Just buy the amount you need to be able to rotate through them as you get the others sterilized and you're good.

I have used the PRESTIGE - Top-Load Sterilizer Medical 2100 (Autoclave) and it is quite simple and effective.

And for sterilization pouches, I like Unimax Supply (unimaxsupply.com) in NY - you can get some cool jewelry there too.

in the absence of an autoclave, sterilize blades/non-disposable sharps with rubbing alcohol, or methylated spirits. It's what doctors used before they had auto claves.

You are correct ... it's what Doctors used before they had autoclaves.  And, they don't use them  anymore because no chemical solution "sterilizes" anything. 

The cheap alternative to an autoclave is a pressure cooker to steam instruments.  But sharps such as needles or scalpels are dulled by rust (due to steam).  So one should only use new, sterile in the package sharps.

Rubbing alcohol doesn't sterilize, it disinfects.  Hepatitis and other nasty buggers will laugh at rubbing alcohol.  In the absence of an autoclave, use only single use sterile sharps and safely dispose of them after use.

If you truly want to be safe, single use is the only way to go unless you do invest in an autoclave. The reason doctors don't use solutions anymore is because we now know they don't actually sterilize anything.

As a CMA in the absence of an autoclave... which I would not invest in unless medical play was the next best thing to sliced bread to me... 10% bleach solution made fresh daily... it's the only thing that kills all solution wise....it's what we use in the lab in the invent of a splash or spill... and yes it does kill HIV which only lives for 3 seconds after being exposed to air... and yes it kills HEP B that can hang around for weeks.

Two things about medical and edge play I have come to realise.
First, I am not in the medical field, and do not think I am qualified to do medical play.  Edge Play on the other hand can be done, but I do not know my own limits with it.  We used a Domme to sceen with us during Edge play.  I nearly passed out assiting her with the needles.
SO for me, it comes down to this question I have to ask myself.  If I think it may be unsafe for me to do, then it is, and I will not do it.

I'm sure this has been reviewed elsewhere, but I felt it impotant enough to review...
Aside from talk regarding tool sterilization; mindful skin prep is another important component. Consider skin preparation seriously. As stated previously; alcohol (pads) do not kill germs. They are a mechanical removal agent. When giving injections; I rub vigorously in order to remove dead skin cells as well as surface bacteria. Another point  to consider...with recent press on MRSA (methicillin resistant staph aureus bacteria) it is imperative to familarize ourselves with all dangers in order to minimize risk in our partners as well as ourselves.
Remember that skin is our largest protective barrier to bacterial invasion. Make sure that any openings are cared for appropriately. If you need antibiotics, do not give them frivolously nor partially...give the entire dose; don't save any for  later. Don't take other people's meds...specific antibiotics work on specific organisms. Seek approp medical help if skin infections occur. Avoidance and denial kill more people then one can imagine.

ugh Primitive thanks for bringing this up... MRSA has been found in a school district near me... the only thing I can add is don't forget Proper HandWashing...it's the first best defense against infection.

Same as use on toys. Bleach and water. They are used in hospitals for cleaning.
 
I Just took a course on HIV, AIDS and Hepatitis prevention. For people who share needles, although it is strongly advised NOT TO, we were told that cleaning with a solution of bleach and water is the most effective means to prevent spreading disease.

I will tell you right now that they didn't know what they were talking about... but then if you consider the massive amount of staf infections and other infections within hospitals...

Chlorine and water WILL NOT WORK...THAT IS A OLD WIVES TALE... I was the only non government person in Idaho state that was fully certified in Biological Hazardous remediation... I spent a year studying how to kill virus infections and bacteria. Chlorine in water is subject to the ph of the water, the tempreture of the water the strength of the mixture as well as length of time you fully immerse the item into the solution... at best, it is a very poor substitute for an actual viralcide that is specifically made for disinfection and destroying highly resistant virus strains... including HIV.

PLEASE... DO NOT PROPAGATE THIS MYTH OF A 10% SOLUTION BEING SAFE... IT IS NOT AND YOU WILL NOT BE SAFE IF YOU USE IT THINKING AS SUCH. IF YOU STILL DO NOT BELIEVE ME THEN DEMAND PROOF THAT THE CDC HAS VERIFIED THAT A 10% SOLUTION IS ACCEPTABLE... I PROMISE YOU THAT THEY CANNOT PROVIDE PROOF OR EVEN STUDIES TO SUPPORT THAT MYTH. IF YOU ARE STILL STUPID ENOUGH TO BELIEVE THEM WITHOUT PROOF THEN YOU PUT YOUR LIFE AND WHOMEVER YOU PLAY WITH IN KNOWN DANGER.  BE RESPONSIBLE... PLEASE.
