This isn't anything new. Anyone living in tropical or subtropical climates know not to swim in standing lakes with algae. Not only because of parasites like this amoeba, but that is frequently the habitat for deadly snakes and alligators. In places like Florida....you dont swin in lakes. That's gator territory.
