PHOENIX - It sounds like science fiction but it’s true: A killer amoeba living in lakes enters the body through the nose and attacks the brain where it feeds until you die.

Even though encounters with the microscopic bug are extraordinarily rare, it’s killed six boys and young men this year. The spike in cases has health officials concerned, and they are predicting more cases in the future.

“This is definitely something we need to track,” said Michael Beach, a specialist in recreational waterborne illnesses for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

I'm selling a new nasal implant that filters out the deadly Microbe it's a bargain at £69.99. At this low price can you really afford not to have one? Flashy star Flashy star.

Fullcircle Org. Does not guarantee that every microbe will be caught by the nasal microbe filter.

First thought.. 'Thank the goddess it's not my UM',
Second thought.. 'Thank the goddess it's in the US'
Third thought, on finding out it was bloody discovered in Aus! 'Does my UM have plans on swimming any time soon?'

So many nasty freaky lil things out there, people really are very vulnerable, for all our medical\scientific advances.

This has been around for years but one thing I heard on the radio is that longer warmer periods from global warming are allowing this to spread. It's a scary death. People diagnosed with this often just went to the doctor because they lost their ability to smell. They feel fine but are told they are dead within a week. No less after a terrifying downward spiral of halucinations and madness. Yikes. Can't imagine a much worse way to go.

Dangling from a ski lift that your testicles have become frozen to and then falling to your death after a failure in shear of the scrotum?

Oh you’re kidding me aren’t you? I thought I had a sale then. Poor old Gill never seals the deal. My wife has left me, I’m in debt and I bought a franchise in this Nose Filter thinking it would be my lucky break.

Perhaps this explains the behavior of some of the posters we see around here.

I know what you mean. Apparently fashion sense is the first thing this little critter attacks.

I read that article and found it fascinating as I used to live 'on the lake' but still frequent favorite skinny dipping coves at the lake...it will give new meaning when I tell people to 'go jump in the lake' for  sure

From what I got out of the article, chlorinated pools are safe.  The amoeba like really warm water, they usually get stirred up out of the muck on the bottoms of the lakes, and you have to actually suck a lot of water deep into your nose and sinus cavities.  They recommend using nose plugs if there's a question.  It sounds like just casual swimming, wading, or floating around is safe.  Just don't get water up your nose.
