The fact is that each state could provide a healthcare plan for the children in its state.  My home state of Kansas does just that.  Children who are covered by medcaid are still covered.  Past that the state basically expanded that program to provide "insurance" called Healthwave for low income families which tops out at $15 a month.  The lowest income people don't pay at all and its a sliding scale after that.  It covers medical, dental, and vision care for kids up to 18 years old.

Its also a whole lot more consumer friendly and works for familes on a level I doubt could be attained by a federal program.  If Kansas can do it and afford it then other states can too.  Not everything is best handled by the federal govt.

I bet we would hear a different tune from the left if the bill protected UM's from conception until the age of 25.

Abortion, it's my right!!!, but them damn repugnants wanna KILL our children!!!
We MUST care for the children...once they're out of the womb that is.

35 Billion to cover add a mere 4 Million to the already existing program.

$8750 for insurance for a child, for one year?

Absurdly expensive and should be veto'd.

That's 17 weeks of operations in Iraq.

Get your flame throwers out.

I am against all forms of insurance and think it should be illegal.

But before you light up, hear me out. The whole medical industry in the US has become a major ripoff. Big money stepped in and coopted all health care professionals. Case in point, why should doctors make so much more than veterinarians ? It is about the same work, and if anything more difficult because the patient cannot describe the symptoms.

This country made a big mistake making doctors rich, because with riches comes greed. And the law of the land has no provisions for health care or a hell of alot of other things they do but shouldn't.

Anyway, not only are doctors a bit too rich, administrators and other suits soak up a bunch of that money. Doc might have a beamer, but his boss has a rolls.

Get this straight folks, right now. THEY are RICH. Everything they do is for the rich, it's just a matter of which rich. Which thieves to give to. It's them against them, we are nothing. We are "us" and as far as they are concerned we can go to hell. Doesn't matter that we are the ones who made them rich, all that matters is their kind. The kind who do not have to worry about money, the kind who get their kids out of military service when they start wars. The kind who actually get good treatment in VA hospitals. The kind who take from us.

I don't want them involved in anything in my life. I do not have, nor do I want any type of health insurance. My health is my responsibility until they throw me in jail.

When you are the one to pay for your own services, you make the decisions. When someone else pays, your life is in their hands. It won't be long before they will tell you what to eat and drink, after all, if you get unhealthy they must pay the bill, so why shouldn't they have the right to tell you how to live ?

Because of statistics, auto insurance companies lobbied all the states to enact seat belt laws. It should be my choice. Even in an airplane, one kid is alive because his seatbelt broke. It should be MY choice, and I have hit my head hard on a windshield. I wasn't driving but I was the front seat passenger. The person behind me slammed into my seat and it was pushed forward so far that I could not reach the door handle to get out. If I had been wearing a seatbelt I would most likely be crippled.

My choice, noone else's. I would sooner die than give up my right to choose.

I certainly don't begrudge your desire to take care of yourself, T, but children don't have that option, nor do some adults.

Really?  How much would you bet?

And the hypothetical? " a bill protected UM's from conception until the age of 25".

Other than making no sense,or relevance, where does "protecting UMs from conception" come from?

Instead of imagining what the left might do with your ridiculous scenario, could you maybe imagine every kid in the US covered w/ health insurance?

Not sexy or exciting, but it would be helpful.

Of course, it *would be* affordable if we got the HMO's out of the middle, doing nothing but sucking away resources....

The whole medical industry in the US has become a major ripoff.

True, in the case of private companies(both medical and insurance),but not w/ Medicare.

Let`s not throw the baby(literally) out w/ the bath water, here.

Zero.

That`s what so freaky about republicans. They don`t even want America`s (poor)children to be healthy.

We got two billion week to throw down a rat hole,in Iraq....WTF?

Owner, I agree with you here.
We're building hospitals in Iraq but not here? That's *our* tax money!
I would tell everyone on this site to call their congressmen and senators and tell them no more money for "Nation Building" in Iraq or anywhere else!
And who told you that Bush is a Republican?
He's as far away from a Republican as you can get!
He's a mouthpiece for big business!
They got *their guy* in.
That would be the same thing as calling Hillary Clinton a Republican.

i think i see the reason they want to do this; they mention in the article that its mainly for children who are above the poverty line, but do not have insurance or enough money to cover their medical bills, but to bush this translates to people who have money and dont need goverment funding.

this is actually the case for a very large percent of the population in the US; families who dont qualify for government help because they make too much, but for what ever reason are barely scraping by. most of those types of families cut insurance as a way to save money, as any GOOD insurance costs a pretty penny, and paying for insurance that wont even pay half of what they want when you go to the doctors' just isnt worth it for people who might not get sick all that often. for these people, who work hard but simply dont make enough, insurance for their children should, god forbid, the unthinkable happen and they need medical help, be provided. im not saying that families with means and that can afford insurance should have a free ride, but i personally see nothing wrong with giving goverment insurance to each and every child, no matter the economic background; a sick child is a sick child is a sick child. if they get cancer and need radiation treatement or are in an accident and need a transplant, it doesnt matter how much money the family has, because the child still needs an expensive procedure that most people in the world couldnt ever dream about having enough money to pay out of pocket with.
