He was the governor here in Arkansas for ten years, and I think he did a really good job in that capacity. He had to pick up the reins from Jim Guy Tucker, who was Clinton's protege. Tucker resigned as governor when he got convicted of a felony over the whitewater investigation. Huckabee did more during his governorship here than Clinton and Tucker had managed to get done in 15 years. Despite what a lot of people think, Clinton and Huckabee did not grow up in the same town. Clinton was born in Hope, he didn't grow up there. Clinton grew up in my hometown of Hot Springs. He never used his upbringing here during his campaign. Hot Springs is a resort town and has a really rough history. It used to be a safe haven for gangsters in the 20's and 30's. Lucky Luciano was arrested here, Al Capone used to vacation here frequently and owned property in the area, and Owney Madden retired here when he left NYC. There were bordellos, casinos, huge book making operations, and rife political corruption. It was a wide open town, and it was like that when Clinton grew up here. Clinton didn't have this innocent upbringing in a quaint little town like Hope. People in this country didn't understand a lot about his background when they voted for him during the 90's. My admiration of Huckabee is because of my knowledge of Arkansas politics and what he had to deal with as governor. I don't agree with his religious and social views a lot of the time. But he did a great job with what he had to put up with here. Arkansas has been controlled by Democrats since Reconstruction. There have only been 3 Republican governors since then. You have to understand that Democrats in the South are not liberals. They are Dixiecrats, and they held their power through corruption. That has been changing the last 15 years, but it still around to a certain degree. Huckabee managed to consolidate our school districts which Clinton and Tucker never attempted to do. He got affordable health insurance for children passed, and he had to fight the federal government over it. He never was involved in any sleazy scandals like the Clintons, and that was really refreshing. Our economy improved for the first time in a long time, and our educational system has finally started to climb out of the mess it was in. I won't be voting for him in the primaries, because Ron Paul fits more into my political ideology. But I still admire Huckabee. He is a good, honest man. He really means what he says, and he doesn't change his views to win votes. Because of that, he won't win and neither will Paul. But I don't vote for people the same as I do when I am picking horses.
