Krissi...you don't appear big enough to have/need the Lap Band.  I can't imagine your BMI is nearly high enough.

I presume you mean a lap cholecystectomy as your surgery.....good luck.  I'm sure you will be fine and you will thank yourself for having it when you no longer have gall pains...they suck!

Good Luck Krissi we'll be praying for you.  I have to agree with Earthly...I somehow doubt you need lapband.  It is for morbidly obese people.  If your photo is anywhere near recent you certainly don't need it.

Aside from the risks it entails.  Your doctor just wants to make some extra money on a frivilous operation.

exactly sub4.

Also, Krissi....I used to run a bariatric clinic and will answer questions about the procedure for you..but I will maintain that you don't need/qualify for a procedure like this if your pictures are accurate.

I am 5'8 1/2 and I weigh exactly 240 pounds- much more than I really thought I weighed...I was thinking I could lose the weight myself naturally...it does seem like docs want to push unnecessary surgeries

you can lose it naturally if you apply yourself to eating right and exercise.  Your BMI is 36 you are not 100 pounds overweight for your height so no wt loss surgery for you *S*.

You will also find that your eating habits change post cholecystectomy....dumping as I mentioned before may occur and you will learn to not like fatty greasy foods too much (that is if you do now).  Once you have that licked....start drinking lots of water and cut back on processed sugars...take a walk etc.  I bet you'll drop some of those extra pounds...

Hum.....now that I'm preaching...I gotta start doing.  I quit working out when I went back to work full time...it is catching up with me.

Good luck, Krissi....and I agree with earthy......it's far better to exercise and eat right than put your body thru the trauma of added surgery.....and right now, weight loss surgeries are raking in millions for docs all over the country!  Altho, I asked my doc about it, and he refused to even think about recommending it for me......says I'm not big enough, or in enough of a risk of serious health problems....that it would actually be worse for me.

Hope all turns out great for you......take care!

I have read that people who have weight loss surgeries that do not meet the important criteria (like being at least 100 pounds overweight, plus other co-morbidities) find themselves in near fatal situations later on trying desperately to stop the weight loss and actually try to gain weight to keep themselves alive.

Please be very careful, the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

LeMis...that is very accurate.  I wouldn't even talk to a doctor who would do this type of surgery randomly for any and all who simply wish to lose weight.  The other thing is the mental health aspect.  Any patient doing this must be capable of it mentally...the challenges are much harder than one may think post op.

WLS (weight loss surgery) requires a LOT of thought, research and soul searching.  It just isn't the easy "fix" that most think it is, it's a "trade-off", in this life you seldom get something for nothing that's why it's really so important to put so much consideration into this decision.  Besides that, you have a few young men who need you in their lives as well.

A good friend of mine had the lap banding procedure.  I remember one night, not too long afterwards, she called me up in hysterics b/c she was so hungry but physically couldn't eat more than a few bites.  She didn't expect to experience hunger pangs after the surgery.  The first month or two after the procedure were very hard on her.   Krissi, please get a second opinion and research all your options before agreeing to something so drastic.  Why your doctor is even suggesting this when you don't meet the criteria for it is something I'd be concerned about.  Something else to consider is the cost.  My friend had to pay for her surgery completely out of pocket b/c it was considered a cosmetic procedure, though other insurance companies may provide full or partial coverage.

In any case, good luck with your lap chole....please let us know how you're doing afterwards

Yes, I am doing alot of research before I will go back into his office to even "talk" about the surgery. Hopefully, by then, I would have lost enough weight not to need the surgery..I am ONLY losing the weight for my health- I find myself a very attractive woman with or without the weight.

Being in the lifestyle I have seen more surgeries than most people will see in their lives.  I've seen the good and the bad.  A woman I know went to Mexico for her surgery...it only cost 3 grand and she said they put her up in a resort during the stay.  Of course, today she weighs the same as she started.  They have went back in and pulled the bands tight twice since the original operation.
Of course, I also know people who were a complete success.  Then came the operation to remove the excess skin.
I've also known people to die from the operations.  So many doctors don't have a clue when it comes to that surgery.
I really wouldn't want to risk my life for surgery I don't need if I were you.  As others have said, there are also serious side effects.
All of the pills you have to take to suppliment your diet afterwards, usually leaving no room for food in your now 4 ounce stomach.  I knew a woman who bleed to death because the doctors cut too far.
People who cannot eat certain foods they could all of their lives because the heart burn got too much for them.

Yes, the operation gives you serious heartburn.  The throwing up seems to be quite common as well.  I could go on and on with the stories I have heard over the years.
Unless it was life or death I wouldn't personally risk it if it were me.
