Status: offline 		Has anyone been watching The Universe series on the History Channel? Do you like the gloom and doom picture of how everything will one day be gone?

Our solar system has Astoroids, Comets, Gamma Blast, Black Holes, and our Sun going Super Nova in the next few billion years. I'm curious as to what your oppinions are of how everything points to the end of the world and life as we know it. Should more effort should be put into our space exploration programs to better the survival chances of the Human Race long after the Earth and Milky Way Galaxy is gone?

Status: offline 		Something spawned from the human race may survive for millions, perhaps even billions, of years to come.

It's unlikely that humans will survive half as long as the Earth does.  Unless, of course, the Earth is destroyed pretty soon.  Then they pretty much die at the same time.

Status: offline 		Thinking in the big picture, we have a lot of time to transend our dependance of the earth and spread elsewhere... Then again I'm a big fan of the original Dune series so I might be overly optimistic.

In a smaller more personal view, I'm already afflicted with a condition that's proven to have a 100% mortality rate (life) so whether humans survive past the solar systems life span is only of so much concern to me.

Status: offline 		Well the earth is going to be destroyed one of these days. That's inevitable. Eventually the sun is going to run out of fuel. Of course we don't have to worry about that event for another 4 billion years or so. But that will happen.

Another large asteroid or comet will hit the earth.

This is why big thinkers for the last hundred years have been saying that man needs to develop space travel or else face extinction. Humans have been fortunate enough to live in a period of global climate and geological stability. Looking at the history of the earth, this has not always been the case. And there will be a time when chaos will return. That is the natural order of things in the universe. If humanity wants to survive, space travel is our only answer.

Sure it looks impossible now.. but just 100 years ago...putting a man on the moon was impossible. Even flying in an airplane across the atlantic ocean was impossible. There are things about physics, time, and the universe that we have very little understanding. It is something that Einstein was just starting to look at before he died. Things like his multiple dimensions theory can't even be tested yet. He theorized that space has more than the 3-demensions that we can normally percieve. That there is multiple other dimensions of time and space that is beyond our normal perception. He also believed that time is not a contant. That in the universe, the rate time moves is always changing. Now if there was some way we can bend space and time, we may be able to travel extreamely long distances in short periods of time. In other words....create a "wormhole."

Status: offline 		Yes - In theory the - The end of a Blackhole  is a worm hole. But the Sun may not be  our concern as the U.S. may be destroyed from freindly fire seeing that some inadvertently had nuclear armed ar heads flying over us very recently -oops!! some didnt know they were on the plane- Boy does he have egg on his face.

Status: offline 		Perhaps we will some day get Warp/wormhole technology, and go seed the stars.  If its doable, I would imagine other races already have, and all the good real estate is taken.  Curious Lord, what do you think about Warp travel?  A more realistic solution to mass extinction would be massive underground/ bottom of the ocean city/shelters, perhaps with a genetic "arc" to bring back lots of the animals and plants at some point.  I am all for near space exploration, colonization, and commercialization, which has the potential to deflect an asteroid, preventing the Extinction.

Yes, I've been watching that series too and I find it very fascinating.
They said that the Universe is 156 billion light years across!
The Milky Way, our Galaxy is 90 million light years across and that there are "billions of Galaxys."
One of those Galaxys is like a speck of light in the Universe!
And they said that the Universe is between 13 and 14 billion years old.
Makes me wonder what is "beyond" the Universe, is there a "wall" of "nothingness" or something?
For example what lies 1 billion l/y past the boundries of the Universe?
I don't know if I believe in the "Big Bang" theory or not.
It seems to "fit" in a human kind of way and would explain the "expansion" of the Universe in theory but it is, after all just "theory."
I think there are probably a lot of things in the Universe that don't comply with human "theory."

Status: offline 		If any really intelligent civilised species "out there" discovered that the vicious homicidal lunatics known as homo sapies were about to give them a visit I dont think they would be very pleased.

I think they would use their technical knowhow to send us the wrong way, direct us anywhere but in their back garden.
If that didn't work they would send a few nuclear thunderbolts to discourage us. Thats what I'd do anyway !
